Description

There's no more country for old men like Joseph Griffin, notorious outlaw and murderer. With his life in hiding unexpectedly exposed, Griffin, now William Potter, flees with his children to the remote, quirky village of Missouri Plaza-a place where everyone has something to hide. Liars, thieves, and killers alike reside in their newfound haven, and Potter and his family face not only the looming threat of the law, but dangers much closer to home.

The discovery of a mysterious buried treasure tantalizes Potter with one final hope for escape. Yet riches aren't the only thing he unearths in his backyard. As the unflinching horrors of Missouri Plaza close in on him, Potter must confront his past and protect his family while evading capture or worse at the hands of a relentless bounty hunter, the U.S. Cavalry, and a creature far older and deadlier than he could ever imagine.

From the award-winning author of The Street Between the Pines.

Horror Reads (Review)

This is an epic western horror novel which reminded me of The Stand in its scope, with creatures that were like the aliens from Independence Day mixed with the thing from Jeepers Creepers. Except this takes place in the wild west during the late 1800's.

Yes, it's about an alien invasion but it's not cheesy or gimmicky. These creatures are blood thirsty when provoked and almost indestructible to common weapons. They're terrifying as well.

When Griffin goes on the run yet again, he feels his life shattering. He's been a bad man in the past and bounty hunters are lining up for his head. Now in his fifties, he's changed. His two children are his world after the death of his only true love, his wife Bessie. But his past catches up to him, leaving him and his kids hiding out yet again. This time in a town called Missouri Plaza in New Mexico.

While digging for a well in his new place, he's going to unearth something far beyond what's available at the time. This will lead to unleashing a creature not of this planet who's been in hibernation beneath the soil for centuries. The resulting bloodshed and chaos on the town is an action packed and unstoppable roller coaster ride of blood, body parts, and violence.

The thing which really makes this novel stand out is how immersive it is. Ultimately, Griffin will have to make a choice if he wants to save the ones he loves and it's this exploration of a man trying to be better in a world that doesn't let him which drives the narrative.

This is a fantastic book which combines character driven arcs with all the horrific vibes you'd want in a horror book and it puts you into this world, at that time, and is perfect for fans of westerns and sci-fi horror. I highly recommend it.

I received an ARC of this book from the author. This review is voluntary and is my own personal opinion.
