EDITORIAL REVIEW:
A Los Angeles Times Favorite New Cookbook of the Year: "Think about all the coffee-infused foods out there (cakes, ice creams, liquors and BBQ spice rubs, to just name a few). Zijderveld makes a powerful argument that we're missing out when we fail to similarly incorporate tea as a spice into our everyday routines. The book is part tea primer but also intrepid tea explorer, with recipes such as strawberry camomile jam, Moroccan mint-flavored quiche, a spinach salad featuring pecans encrusted with a masala chai maple syrup, and hurricane popcorn with Dragon Well tea furikake. (It's like salty-sweet kettle corn, but with tea.) This book would make a great gift for both tea newcomers and those who can rhapsodize about the smoky complexities of a Lapsang souchong."

If just drinking tea isn’t enough for you, you’ll love this cookbook filled with recipes for mains, sides, and desserts all using tea. With fascinating facts about the origins and types of tea, this is a book that belongs on the shelf of every tea-totaler.
Will be adding to blog shortly, with link.
It has been a while since I reviewed a tea themed book, which is just tragic! At the time of writing this, Steeped: Recipes Infused with Tea is not entirely out to the general public yet, but since I also review books, thanks to Netgalley, I got my hands on it early. So, the first thing I can say about this cookbook devoted to teas is, it is pretty! I would show off how pretty it is, but since I am reading this as an e-book that is not really a thing I can do, just take my word for it that it is a very showy recipe book.
The book starts, as many do, with an intro into the showcase ingredient, and points for saying that the tea is oxidized rather than fermented with regards to different kinds of tea. There are also notes on the subject of terroir, flushes, and different tea cultures, they are brief but any mention at all is appreciated. Even I learned something, apparently another name for Cold Brewed tea is Spa Tea, and considering I drink it on hot days when I feel like death and said cold brewed tea refreshes me, it makes sense! Of course there is a section on recommended tools and teas to add to your collection, and the teas recommended are all easy to get your hands on, so it is good for beginners too.
The recipes are divided into times of the day (like breakfast, lunch, and so forth) and sound delicious! Rooibos honey butter, green tea granola...hello breakfast! Some of the recipes have photos, so do not, obviously I wish that all the recipes had photos of the finished dishes, but that is just because I am obsessed with that in my cookbooks. Reading this book managed to make me hungry and thirsty at the same time, well done book!
I will probably add this one to my collection of cookbooks and tea books,I am a terrible cook, but I need the practice, and what better way to do that than with my favorite thing ever, tea!
I was fortunate to get an advanced reader copy of this book and I also was a recipe tester for two recipes. The book is beautiful. The pictures are enticing and I can hardly wait to try more recipes from this book. I love to cook but have done very little with tea. (Serious coffee drinker) I do however love the "idea" of tea and tea time so I will spend some more time with this lovely book and sip tea while I decide which recipe to try next.
I really enjoyed this cook book. While it's not useful for my classes it's extremely useful to me personally. It's well written and interesting, and the recipies are unique. I'm especially fond of the preserve/jam recipies as well as the teabbouleh thus far. A great book for those who love cooking and want something unique. This would also be a fantastic gift for the chef in your life.
Holy-Cow....*WOW*....*WOW*....*WOW*!
My husband said to me...."Teas-and-Books", "You must be in fusion-heaven"! YES!!!! Two of my favorite things: *Books-and-Teas*!
Thirteen years was the start of my 'personal' 'tea' obsession. Every Saturday for approx. 8 months --I visited Michaelangelo -(new to the Bay Area), from Italy -for a personal well-being session in his zen room --(body-mind-spirit-therapy). I was Michaelangelo's first, last, and 'only' female client. He serves the Male Gay Community. My Saturday sessions were 3 to 4 hours long. I treasured these sessions --and the teas we shared.
Meditation and 'teas' were always part of the sessions.
Michaelangelo had 'hundred's' of loose teas from around the world. He taught me how to select teas, and different methods of brewing.
I later took my friends on 'tea-field' trips. I still enjoy brewing teas for our friends...and pass on things I've learned. I continued my 'tea' education from an older couple from China who own their own very authentic tea store.
Our 'AUTHOR' --has opened my eyes to an entire new way of looking at teas. I've 'heard' of cooking with teas...(but I haven't done it myself). I'm pretty good with a French Press, making myself and others a killer yummy cup of tea (light, medium, or strong), --and other styles of brewing....but I've yet poach foods with teas --etc.
Reading Annelies Zijderveld's book "Steeped" is WONDERFUL!!! She spent 14 years -writing this book in her 'head'. She has a masters in inter-cultural studies....but I think she really is being humble: She has a Ph.d in TEA MASTERY!!!! She is sooooo inventive with teas.
This is very special book using infused teas in recipes the author has 'created'. Delicious mouth-watering-sounding recipes. My husband has already picked out a few he wants me to make him: Rainbow salad with smoky chickpeas, cauliflower steaks with tea Umami Sauce, Green tea guacamole with grapefruit toast.
For a yummy dessert: Matcha teaffogato with toasted coconut ice cream!
She also shares what she is a 'fan' of and what she is not. (less a fan of herb tea, lacking astringency,.....'more a fan of black tea for 'drinking'). Cooking is different: herbal Tisanes work well.
Loose tea is preferable over bagged teas. (I agree). However, I don't 'always' need to be a 'tea' snob. lol Tea 'bags' have improved in recent years, too!
For those with less 'tea' knowledge --you can read about Tea cultures from different countries, different types of teas, methods of cooking...(its really interesting).
**Proper teapots**: I have several different types --depending on what type of tea I am making. I use a small clay pot for certain black teas. The author talks about this also...
Plus she talks about other various 'tea' pot choices and tea tools. (a spice grinder is handy), etc.
She outlines for us 'which' teas pairs best with different types of food -for cooking.
For example: Jasmine tea pairs nice with melon, citrus, and bittersweet chocolate.
Morraccan Mint pairs with savory and sweet foods.
The pictures in this book are LOVELY!!!!!!!!! (colorful cups of teas, and delicious food recipes)
A great book to own for people with an interest in TEA...(newbies and oldies).
Great gift book!
CHEERS to Annelies!!!! Such a incredible book she has put together!!!
Thank you to the publishing company and Netgalley.
Beautiful and inspiring cook book for tea enthusiasts, especially well suited for those of us inclined to hoard more tea than what is reasonable. Clear instructions and no-nonsense list of the commonly available types of tea used in the recipes.
This would be a great gift or addition to a large (or specialized) public library collection. The recipes call for many different varieties of tea, some of which are very unusual. This is a beautiful and fun book, but very specialized.
If you love tea and like cooking then this is the cookbook for you. The recipes are broken down into time of day you would eat the food. Every recipe has a tea component that most of the time needs to be made before you can start prepping the food. I didn't make any of the recipes in the book but I was tempted as I was reading it. There is good info in here about water temperatures to brew certain types of tea without making them bitter. A lovely gift book for someone that likes cooking and has a passion for tea.
Steeped by Annelies Zijderveld (with photographs by Stephanie Shih) is an absolutely stunning creation filled with sublime images and lots of recipes that are sure to delight most palates! It is also interspersed with apt quotes that make me smile.
This book really is a tea lovers dream; it has interesting information on tea history, culture, cooking, variations of tea, equipment and staple ingredients needed and much more. The tools are not ridiculously obscure and in fact I have most of them in the kitchen. The few things I don't have can be easily purchased at low cost.
There is a metric converter at the back which is handy if you are not used to measuring in cups etc. I will definitely purchase a hard copy to add to my cooking and recipe shelf. Also I much prefer having a physical copy when creating in the kitchen; it's just more satisfying somehow.
I have tried three recipes so far, each came out really well, very tasty. I can't wait to try more. Overall I think this book is incredibly innovative and is a great addition to the niche cookbook/recipe genre. I would certainly recommend Steeped to any tea fans or just anyone who wants to try scrumptious new recipes! I received this book from NetGalley in order to review
OoLaLa! This is a top of the line, Aromatic style cooking, recipe book. Very elegant & beautiful dishes of food! Creativity at it's best!
Just bought several of the print copy to keep for future gift giving.
In a sea of beautiful cookbooks, and a plethora of repetitive and irritating cooking blogs Steeped stands out in a good way.
