In this first book Kikoo begins to realize that what's behind his house in the forest is much more alive than he ever imagined it could be. Sparkling light particles called 'shimmers' awaken Kikoo to many secrets that help him learn to how to communicate with nature and the creatures that live there. He becomes transported to a magical realm where he's introduced to angelic beings who teach him how to solve his first issue with the bullies in his neighborhood.
Suresha was drawn to writing stories for children from a young age. Her first stories were told by a group of ants learning to find their way to safety amongst humans while humans were learning to notice smaller forms of life. Studying education and school psychology nourished a desire to provide ways to make learning fun and interesting for the young whether in or out of school.
Being born into a family of mixed races, Suresha learned to appreciate and value traditions from a variety of cultures while intuitively developing a relationship with Nature that continued to grow throughout her life. Many of the things she learned from Nature and from her teachers and ancestors are expressed in these books along with an attempt to share the ceaseless magic and wonder the subtle dimensions of life have to offer.

In this story, Shimmers are sparking particles of light that help Kikoo, the main character who is a six-year-old boy, become aware of how alive everything is around him. One morning, as he sets off on an adventure behind his house with his dog, he becomes initiated by the the Shimmers. After that, he finds he can understand animals, plants and insects. He also meets other beings who help and teach him.
Books like this are wonderful for young children as they allow their imaginations to soar. I think this will be a wonderful series for young children.
What I really liked about the story, is when the author decribes the magical happenings. I felt completely absorbed by the story on such occasions and she made me believe, that I was there in Terraauck or able to listen to the flowers singing to Kikoo. At such moments her style of writing transmits peaceful happiness. I like how Kikoo sets about to try and recover his bike without anger or aggressivity. The illustrations tie in with the story and are colourful and vivid and at the end of the book is a glossary, explaining, amongst other things, the meaning of various character names.
I'm also intrigued to find out how Kikoo's adventures continue. What will the boy Bilal teach him?
Overall an interesting start to a new series, where the author shows clearly her potential to take the reader on a magical journey.
