Simply in Season is a beautifully laid out collection of fresh, appetizing recipes and ideas for every season. A wonderful guide to fresh vegetables and fruits is provided. It includes how to store, handle, and cook each. Worth the price of the book.
The Strawberry Spinach Salad is a superb and has several dressing options. There are bread recipes, meat dishes, oodles of vegetarian options, and even summer canning recipes.
This cookbook came to my attention just at the right time with inspiration for Spring cooking.
This gorgeous cookbook simply inspires the reader to get out there, buy fruits and vegetables that are in season and make healthy meals! This is one of the best cookbooks I have ever seen! I received a downloaded copy to preview; however, I plan to purchase a copy because I loved this so much.
Since I like to have an idea of what recipes I might find in a cookbook, I am including some here: Maple walnut scones; rhubarb muffins; strawberry brunch souffle; sausage and greens soup; Nova Scotia hodgepodge; strawberry spinach salad; dandelion bacon salad; lemon asparagus pasta; spring quiche trio; vegetable or fruit oven pancake; chicken or tofu stir fry; grilled maple barbecue chicken; herb roasted lamb; zucchini yeast rolls; focaccia; veggie bread ring; blueberry coffee cake; four bean salad; Greek salad with grilled chicken; roasted summer vegetables and so much more.
The book contains a fruit and vegetable guide in the beginning that explains how to purchase, store and use produce. I highly recommend this very useful cookbook that has become a favorite of mine.
This book is incredible. I loved many of the recipes. As someone who just bought a house and started a garden, this book is great. As I went through the book, I was actually planning on what seeds I would be planting this year. I think this book would be welcomed in any home where the people care about where their food comes from and what they eat. I am sure our Library will be getting this book but I KNOW I will be picking up this Tenth Anniversary Edition.
Simply in Season by Mary Beth Lind and Cathleen Hockman-Wert is a beautiful book with very useful information. The beginning of the book lists fruits and vegetables by season, along with how to store them, how to serve them, and how many cups each one typically yields. There are so many wonderful recipes, also categorized by season. I wish there were a color photo for every recipe, but honestly, there are so many, there's no way that many photos could be included. The book would be huge.
I was given an ARC of this book via Netgalley for an open and honest review.
I LOVE this book. The only reason I didn’t give it 5 out of 5 stars is because it’s not based on Australian seasons and common foods. It is a minor complaint, but was enough to stop me giving it the full marks, sorry.
Why do I love this book? Well, I’m very much into eating locally and in season and this book is perfect for that! Although this is the 10th edition, I’d not seen it before so can’t compare it to older versions. Though I will say the gorgeous layout is very inviting and the pictures entice you to read more and before you know it you’ll be half way through the book.
The recipes are easy to follow and simple without being boring… if that makes sense? I love the little stories and examples of why in season and local is better for us. It helps encourage and re-inforce why we should all have a passion for these food principles.
The extra information on the foods, how to store them, how to prepare them, etc at both the front and back of the book is really helpful without being boring either and I really did enjoy reading this book from cover to cover. I’ve already earmarked a few recipes to try and slip into my next few meal plans… though I have to say spring was my favourite section and I REALLY can’t wait for it to come back to my hills!
The only minor niggle I have about this book is I, personally, didn’t like all the religious quotes and such. But I did not mark the book down because of them as they were my own problem, not that of the book or those who created it with their best intentions and beliefs. But, yes, I did find them unneeded. But they were easy enough to ignore and the rest of the book is just such a wonderful breath of fresh air when it comes to food and cooking… it makes up for this personal issue.
Would I recommend this book to others? Yes and no. I would definitely recommend it to someone of my cooking and ‘what’s in season’ skill level as it would be a great addition and inspiration to work from. But I wouldn’t suggest someone starting out with ‘in season’ cooking to buy it here in Australia as there are a lot of mental changes you need to make and aspects you need to rethink to use it. Then again, if a novice wanted to buy it and then use it to learn as the go – not a problem, great idea.
If you’re into eating within the seasons, growing and eating your own food or supporting your local farmers while feeding your family – this book is really worth a look. Please make me an Australia one so I can love it just that little bit more. :-)
A simply elegant reference for anyone interested in eating locally with the seasons. Contains very detailed selection and preparation notes for fruits and vegetables, along with inspiringly simple recipes for four-season healthy eating. Delightful!
This reminds me of my favorite church cookbooks - simple (but tasty!) food, including many recipes with a twist. This book would be a great addition to any public library collection. It would also be a great gift, especially for a housewarming!
I found this cookbook to be very well organized. I loved the idea of providing different options for recipes to help change up flavors and in a sense providing even more recipes. Cookbooks focusing on what's in season I believe is becoming a more popular thing for those looking to make better environmental choices. This cookbook would be a great place to start for those looking to do so.
A fruit and vegetable guide and 300+ seasonal recipes. I’m looking forward to trying out the lemon and herb butters on some Jersey corn this weekend.
The photo's are just mouth watering and make you want the items on the page. each page is a treat for the eyes and makes you want to rush out and buy from the farmer's market right then and there. The recipes are simply and turn out just great !! Need and want more from this author for the rest of the cooking seasons of the year.
