Description

FROM THE AUTHOR OF THE SUNDAY TIMES NUMBER ONE BESTSELLER THE CALLER.

Seven days after being abducted, the body of a twenty-year-old woman is found on a green patch of grass by the Los Angeles International Airport. She has been left with her limbs stretched out and spread apart, placing her in a five-point human star.

The autopsy reveals that she had been murdered in a most terrible way. But the surprises don't end there.

Detective Robert Hunter, who leads LAPD's Special Section, Ultra Violent Unit, is assigned the case. But almost immediately a second body turns up. Hunter knows he has to be quick.

Surrounded by new challenges as every day passes, Detective Hunter finds himself chasing a monster. A predator whose past hides a terrible secret, whose desire to hurt people and thirst for murder can never be quenched - for he is DEATH.

Fiction - Crime

Score: 8/10

No matter how much crime I read I still find it very difficult to even read fiction books that involve children being abused. In Carters' latest novel we see the kidnapping and prolonged abuse of 11 year old Richard Temple who was already being abused at home by his father. His hell just reaches another level. My heart bled for Richard, or Squirm as his capture "The Monster" calls him. From being starved and sodomised daily he is usually required to clean the kitchen floor each day with his tongue. So I really want The Monster to pay for this big time. Enter the brilliant Detective Hunter and his partner Detective Garcia, yay, they should find the missing boy shouldn't they? Oh no they won't because Squirm's Dad never even reported him missing. Detective Hunter and Garcia might only find him if they can find The Monster who is leaving bodies left right and centre, that is Squirm's only hope.

I love Chris Carter and his brilliant psychological insight into the mind of a killer, and despite the subject of this particular book being a bit more difficult to swallow, it was still another excellent read.

Well what can I say about this book by Chris Carter the first book I have ever read by this Author.
I thought it was a superb book a bit gruesome in places but I liked that and some great twists.
A thrilling gripping read.

As a first-time reader of a Chris Carter story I cannot praise his skill of storytelling enough. The plot immediately drew me in and I’ve never wanted the main characters, Hunter and Garcia, to get their man more! I enjoyed the chase from the detectives point of view focusing on the criminal behaviour of the perpetrator more thanI did the vivid descriptions as he carried out his crimes.

Definitely not for the faint-hearted, readers need to prepare themselves for the gruesome nature of the crimes and the autopsies conducted. There is also a lot of detail surrounding a child’s abduction and the violent and horrendous abuse the child suffers.

If you enjoy the crime and physiological thriller genre, this book is for you.

This is the seventh book in the Robert Hunter series, but it is being released as a standalone.

There is a lot to like about a Chris Carter book - fantastic characters in Robert Hunter and Carlos Garcia (who are back together as partners for the first time since book 4 in this series, I think); depraved crimes that make the reader squirm just a little (which is a good thing); a great sense of timing and pacing - you always feel like you are just one step behind the bad guy but you know - you just know - there will be that one clue that will click everything into place; and the endings are generally well thought-out and executed.

And we get all of that in this book. Because that is what Chris Carter does...and he does it very well.

The one thing that did disappoint me in this book (I can't really remember it being an issue before) was that we didn't really get to see the working mind of the detective. It is like there are crimes going on...the detectives are stumped...then suddenly they know what it is and we get the explanation at the end. That was a little disappointing for me.

All in all, though, this is another cracking novel by one of the best in the business.
