Description
It’s wintertime for our favorite furry friends, Earl and Mooch, and they have a lot to do to get ready to hibernate:
Step 1: Fill their bellies with shnacky shnacks.
Step 2: Cozy up on their people’s warm laps.
Or maybe instead of hibernating, Mooch and Earl will help Shtinky Puddin’, Bip and Bop, and the rest of their buddies enjoy the beautiful and magical winter season. Take a peek at The Mutts Winter Diaries to find out.
You can help your animal friends, too! Check out the More to Explore section in the back of The Mutts Winter Diaries to find out how you can make sure winter critters stay warm and full of shnacks through the cold, snowy months.

The adventures of the gang never disappoint, and for years Mutts has been my favorite strip. The humor is there, great friendships, probably what's a pretty accurate representation of the animal/human bond and relationship. It also, at times, will tug on the heartstrings, but that's okay. At the end of the day, Mutts makes me come back for more and nearly always leaves me with a smile. As an animal owner and lover, there's a lot to relate to, and I definitely see aspects of animals I've had in the characters.
Mooch!! That cat! Oh, I love Mutts, I have since I was a tiny thing, first discovered in a news paper, where I noticed that there was a cute comic strip featuring a small black and white dog and a cat that says yesh. At the time I had a small back and white dog and had recently said goodbye to my cat (doctors thought I was deathly allergic to cats, turned out I wasn't, so sad!) so it was no surprise my young self would latch onto the comic...and start saying yesh nigh constantly (I still do!)
This book is a collection of winter and snow themed strips, it is incredibly cute, and Mooch's overreacting to snow and weather in general is something hilarious. Earl is both cute and sweet, and like most dogs, has a perpetual hankering for human nibbles. It is not really a secret, Mooch has always been my favorite, he is just a whimsical cat that I am pretty sure is a perfect avatar for most cats...and I assume all cats speak with a lisp.
If you love Mutts and winter, this is the perfect collection of comic strips. Also if you are an animal lover, Mutts does a lot of work for finding homes for shelter animals and supports rescuing pets rather than buying them from breeders, both of my cats were rescues, so this is near and dear to my heart.
Patrick McDonnell, whose comic Mutts has long delighted fans of all ages, has created a delightful volume of comics for kids, perfect for the upcoming holiday season -- The Mutts Winter Diaries. The young and the young at heart will enjoy this special volume of winter comics featuring America's beloved animal duo, Mooch and Earl. All of our favorite characters make an appearance - Shtinky Puddin', Sourpuss, Guard Dog, Bip and Bop, and even Crabby.
Mooch the cat and his canine friend Earl approach life with openness and honesty that is refreshing. The selected strips are whimsical and thought provoking, perfect for encouraging children to care for animals and their environment. Whether at rest or at play, exploring or sleeping, Mooch and Earl live joyfully.
Would I recommend The Mutts Winter Diaries? Yesh!!

I have loved these two since I first started reading them in the newspaper and these collections are a great idea. Mooch and Earl are just cute and funny. With this having a winter theme I found myself agreeing with Mooch's comments about the season all the time! I enjoyed this and look forward to more.
I love the Mutts comic strip! The gentle humor is perfect for all ages. Newly independent and reluctant readers will enjoy this collection of comics. The art extras are a real bonus.

A few years ago, I stopped playing my city’s local paper simply because it sucked. It really did. I heard that it has gotten better, but I don’t know. The only thing that I have missed from that paper was McDonnell’s Mutts. (Yes, I know, but reading it in a newspaper is different, okay?).
Mutt is great because Earl and Mooch and their people and friends are anyone’s pets. Your dog or cat may look different but they either act like Earl and Mooch all the time, or act like one of the supporting animals. It’s not like Garfield or Heathcliff. Furthermore, McDonnell does quite a bit about animal rescue and shelters. It’s hard not to like this strip.
The Winter Diaries are pretty much what the gang gets up to or doesn’t get up to, in winter. They try hibernating. They meet a penguin, who may, just may, be a stand in for people in general, and they hang with bears. We see what the squirrels get up to and watch Mooch try to find two identical snowflakes.
And then there is the evil weatherman.
At the end of the book is a brief guide to what animals featured in the comic really, truly do during the winter and what you can do to make life a bit easier for them.
And this is what makes Mutts wonderful because it is for cat and dog lovers, not one or either, and for those who like animals in general. It’s funny because it is true.
I mean, what cat owner hasn’t been spooned by the furry beast and what dog doesn’t got boing when on a walk?
This is a cute book of winter comics for kids. As a long time fan of Mutts, I of course enjoyed it!
A collection of winter strips, all in one place. it makes you realize how great Patrick McDonnell is at recycling jokes but giving them new little twists each time. Earl and Mooch are trying to figure out how to survive the long cold winter. One storyline involves hibernating while others include various types of clothing, or trying to find identical snowflakes. A very cute book that any comics reader will enjoy.
So cute! Perfect read for people that have a hard time in Winter.
Ever since I was a young kid I loved reading the comic strips in the newspaper. When I started checking out books from the library, I was thrilled to find anthologies or collections of comic strips in book form. I haven't subscribed to a paper in years so having a chance to read The Mutts Winter Diaries was like visiting an old friend.
Patrick McDonnell's collection is fresh and witty and yet so familiar. I love how he is able to say so much-- capture a mood or thought in a few frames. Earl, Mooch and their friends truly capture the best best and worst in our feelings about winter. So much to identify with and laugh about.
I especially loved the Human Society plug and tips in the More to Explore section at the end. I realize this book is intended for younger readers but it is certainly a pleasure for all ages.
Love the format and layout, the illustrations are top-notch-- a fun book all around!

This is a collection of winter-themed comic strips featuring Earl, Mooch and their various friends (human and animal). I agreed with so many of Mooch's comments about winter and snow! They meet a penguin, who may, just may, be a stand in for people in general, and they hang with bears. We see what the squirrels get up to and watch Mooch try to find two identical snowflakes. Some comics are funnier than others, but they're all such fun to read. Earl, Mooch and their friends truly capture the best best and worst in our feelings about winter. So much to identify with and laugh about.
The artwork is as adorable as ever, and Mooch, Earl, and the gang are their usual goofy selves. I also loved how some of them were in color (no doubt originally printed in the Sunday paper).
I especially loved the Human Society plug and tips in the More to Explore section at the end that talks about different critters in the winter time and how they stay warm. There are even suggestions for things you can do, and a note to keep pets inside where it's warm when it gets snowy outside.

This book is funny and the kids will really enjoy it. I'll probably buy it, although I have one small issue. The dog that talks with a speech impediment might be a little hard for the kids to figure out. Other than that, I think it's a good choice, especially with winter on its way.
I love reading Mutts in the newspaper whenever I am able and this collection was perfect as the air starts to cool and fall and winter are fast approaching. The collection chronicles Mooch and Earl in their winter activities, or lack-there-of and I found it to be laugh out loud funny and even shared some of the panels with my husband while reading.
The animals in the panels are adorably drawn and Mooch and Earl are up to all their normal exploits of napping and being walked but there is snow and other animals and much love and holiday cheer.
My favorite panels were the ones about hibernation and the characters trying to do it but failing miserably, there is even a run-in with a bear and Mooch yelling at a Christmas tree. There is even an "More to Explore" section about the Winter outside and the animals and their habits. I found this whole package wonderful.
Mutts is always good fun. Clean, multi-layered, and at times sweet. Winter makes for a nice themed collection.
Mutts is a particularly fun comic strip and I'm not just saying that because my name is Earl! This collection, The Mutts Winter Diaries, collects a number of winter themed strips. If there is a drawback to this concept it is that many revolve around just a couple of themes (hibernation and snowflakes). What I find works with small children is a collection of these types of books and instead of going through a book in one or two sittings go through roughly a week's worth at a sitting from several different strips.
The rating I am giving is because anyone who likes the strip will enjoy it and both young and old can relate to what they deal with. It is light, fun and wintry! Just allow yourself to enjoy a nice pleasant laugh as a break.

I always love Earl and Mooch and friends. This a great of collection.
Earl and Mooch are up for some winter fun in this collection.
Along with friends, the lovable dog and cat get into all sorts of fun. Children of all ages will enjoy this one, I know my inner child did.
Rating 5 out of 5 Read@Book
