Description
It strikes without warning. A massive geomagnetic solar storm that destroys every power grid in the northern hemisphere. North America is without lights, electricity, phones, and navigation systems. In one week, the human race is flung back to the Dark Ages.
Nothing Can Save You. . .
In Boulder, Colorado, weather technicians watch in horror as civilization collapses around them. Planes are falling out of the skies. Cars are dead. Pandemonium and terror grip the Northern Hemisphere. As nuclear reactors across North America face inevitable meltdowns, the U.S. President remains powerless in a heavily guarded White House. From London to Boston to Anchorage, there is no food, no water, no hope. It's every man for himself. . .and it will only get worse.
Survival Is Everything.
Only one man--army veteran Zeke Marshall--is prepared to handle a nightmare like this. But when he tries to reunite with his family in Dallas--across a lawless terrain as deadly as any battlefield--he discovers there are worse things in life than war. And there are terrible and unthinkable things he'll have to do to survive. . .

"We forget just how painfully dim the world was without electricity...." - Bill Bryson
I felt POWERLESS was a good example of the post-apocalyptic genre.
What would the world's population do if suddenly there was no electrical power and because of that, no water or sewer service either (because water and sewer lines need electricity to run the pumps)?
A coronal mass ejection (CME) from the sun has destroyed the power lines/transformers north of the equator - and some below that. Satellites have been destroyed. Life on earth has just lost its veneer of civilization and people are doing what they need to survive.
The story follows several different characters including the POTUS. Zeke Marshall from Oklahoma is the main protagonist, intent on rescuing family in Texas.
The storyline was good although rather simplistic in spots. I've read other post-apocalyptic stories that I felt were more believable. This one does get across the message of how terrible it would be - for everyone - if something of this magnitude happened.
I wish there had been more on how other people (the greater population) actually survived or didn't survive this disaster.
NOTE: I received this book from Kensington Books through Net Galley in exchange for my honest review.
