Description

A chatty crow, a newly ambitious dog, and a pair of unlikely animal friends are the stars of these three charmingly illustrated tales by Don Freeman, author of Corduroy and Beady Bear. The long-out-of-print stories, now available in a single-volume collection, combine humor with gentle lessons in humility, responsibility, and loyalty.
Cyrano the Crow centers on a talkative creature who takes great pride in his ability to imitate owls, parrots, and other birds. But when Cyrano is invited to perform on a television show, the conceited crow gets a comeuppance.
Flash the Dash recounts the tale of a lazy dachshund named Flash who likes to nap while his spouse, Sashay, does all the work. When Sashay insists that he find a job, Flash becomes a messenger and realizes the importance and benefits of hard work.
The Turtle and the Dove tells of a weary bird who finds rest on a tiny round island―which turns out to be a turtle's back. The new companions weather a storm together and discover the power of a deep friendship.

These three out of print children's stories are put together in this book with cute illustrations.

Cyrano the Crow does imitations of other birds and thinks he is better than the man on television doing the same thing. When he goes to the TV station to appear on a show, he does remarkably well until he is asked to caw like a crow.

Dash the lazy daschhund is sent out to work and help support his family. He gets a job delivering messages and does such a good job, he is called Dash the Flash. He works very hard until the spring when he finally takes some time off. He realizes the value of working hard to support his wife and new family.

The dove and the turtle are both lost and become friends to help one another. When a storm hits they get separated. Dove ends up on a lovely island where she meets another dove and they eventually have babies. Dove and Turtle meet up again and the families become fast friends.

Cute stories that demonstrate 3 lessons for life.

I have always loved Corduroy by Don Freeman, and when I came across this collection of out of print stories by the same author, I couldn't wait to read them. Each of the three stories is beautifully illustrated and the stories are sure to capture a child's imagination

Two of the stories are about animals who help each each other and the third one, Cyrano, is about a crow who tries to do his very best. The author has a gentle way of storytelling that has a moral in each one, giving parents and educators an opportunity to expand on what happened.

I highly recommend this delightful book.

'The Don Freeman Treasury of Animal Stories' by Don Freeman is a reprint of three stories I was not familiar with. I enjoyed them, and I think kids might but there will be some story elements that might puzzle them.

In Cyrano the Crow, we meet a crow who has a talent for imitating other birds. He gets a chance to star on television, but his elevated ego might get the best of him. In Flash the Dash we meet a lazy Dachsund who gets motivated by his spouse to go out and find a job. He realizes that she has a reason for getting him out of the house. In The Turtle and the Dove, we meet a dove flying across the sea who lands on a small island for rest and meets a new friend. The story follows them as their families grow.

They are charming stories and well illustrated in the familiar Don Freeman style. Some story elements like tv antennas or a job as a messenger might puzzle more modern readers who have never seen such a thing, but I think the characters are fun and relatable. My favorite among the stories was the last one, which was gentle and nice.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Dover Publications and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
