Description

I looked at her, looking at the photos. What would it be like for her not to go back to Europe again? Knowing that she’s only scratched the surface of the centuries-old continent, but would never return to explore it further? We sat for a moment, she fidgeting over something on the table and I wondering what it must be like to have an explorer’s heart, married to someone with the heart of a farmer. Before I knew what I was saying--and surprising myself--I blurted out, “You know, we should travel together sometime.” “That would be great!” She smiled. “I think we would travel well together.” Her eyes lit up. I could travel with my mom. Seriously--how hard could it be? Thus begins David Alan Morrison’s hilarious memoir about the evolution of family dynamics. Following the sudden death of his father, a single, middle-aged gay guy struggles with his own mortality by reminiscing about the travels with his gregarious mother. Travels With Penny is a look at the transformation of the baffling, complex relationship between children and their parents.

Advance Praise

This book made me laugh out loud, David Alan Morrison knows what makes a good story. His characters are people you want to get to know and spend time with. He writes about family and relationships in a way that is honest, real and ....comical - which makes it even more real. David "gets" people and this book shows that. Read it. Enjoy it. Was thrilled staying up till 1am for two nights reading this book. The lack of sleep was a good trade-off for getting to read this wonderful adventure. It was funny and clever but also so insightful in regards to all the relationships we cherish on so many levels. Thank you for this joyful romp through your travels and your heart! Oh, heavens... what a great book! A friend suggested it for a fun vacation read... and I am so happy that I read it! What a hilarious story, yet so heartwarming, too. I see echoes of my own family in there, all the zany-ness mingled with the love. I literally read this book without putting it down, cover to cover... I loved it! Please, please, write another book!!!
