Description

Sliding Delta is a quest to find legendary musician Mississippi John Hurt and learn to pick the Delta blues that takes a Chicago college boy south of Memphis in the summer of 1965.

Rural Mississippi comes alive as Doug Spencer pumps gas at Kinder's store in Avalon the year the Voting Rights Act was passed. He sees the range of kindness and bigotry as the races co-exist in changing times. Stories told on Kinder's porch are background for the music. Addie Kinder, crippled with polio since age 6, captivates Doug with her quick wit and beautiful voice. They sing together in her rural church and face down the Klan who come to burn Kinder's store. Doug meets and performs with old blues greats John Hurt, Albert King, Howlin' Wolf (Chester Burnett), and Hubert Sumlin, and describes their styles in musical terms.

Sliding Delta is a rollicking coming of age story; a poignant love story; a celebration of this uniquely American music. Delta blues are a window into the soul of the Old South; a scream of pain; a promise of something better.
