Mary Lindeen has authored many non-fiction books for young children and beginning readers that are wonderful. This is a great book for children learning about holidays (special days), in this case St. Patrick's Day. It talks clover, the colour green, parades, leprechauns, pots of gold and the story behind St. Patrick and ridding Ireland of snakes. It is a beginning basal reader that had realistic pictures to accompany the words. The text is short, perfect for emerging readers. The main facts are probably exactly what a parent or teacher would use to describe the celebrations surrounding St. Patrick's Day. This would be a great companion book to "It's St. Patrick's Day, Dear Dragon" by the same publisher. At the end of the book there are activities a teacher or caregiver could do with the reader to reinforce what was read as well as a list of words used in the book.
Colorful illustrations combine with sparse text to provide emergent readers with some information about the holiday.
I downloaded the book again, and got the St. Patrick's Day version. It's a good basic book. There aren't very many good beginning St. Patrick's Day books that don't involve leprechauns hopping all over the place. There's nothing wrong with that, but I am really glad there's a good non-fiction book now.
Another great nonfiction book from Norwood House Press! It has everything kids would need to know about St. Patrick’s Day. (The leprechaun on the last page looked a little creepy, though.)
This is a terrific beginning reader holiday book! The photographs are gorgeous.
I read St Patrick's Day by Mary Lindeen this past March to my Grandson who is in Kindergarten. It was an excellent vehicle to introduce him to the concept and symbols regarding this holiday and practice his emerging reading skills. We also participated in some of the enrichment activities found in the book. Lindeen has written numerous nonfiction beginning readers for young children to expose them to relevant concepts found in the real world as well as entice them into a love for reading. The photographs enhanced the text, providing a reference point for further discussion.
