Description

Hard-boiled police detective Richelle Dadd is back. And in a whole world of fresh trouble. Still… well, dead as the result of a Gypsy curse, she must now face life as a single mom. Not only does Richelle have to worry about all the usual stuff—her baby’s health and well-being and keeping a roof over their heads by working a precarious dead-end job—there’s also her homicidal ex-boyfriend to fear, the father of her child, stalking them both day and night with the avowed intent of kidnapping baby Tamara.

Not to mention a mysterious Russian agent hell-bent on “recruiting” Richelle into a suspiciously perfect overseas job, plus there’s a vicious Ripper-style killing to investigate, one that ties in with the Black Rose Murders that terrorized the city nearly ninety years ago. Throw in the increasingly bizarre behavior of Richelle’s ex-husband Devon and the fact that somebody’s bugged every inch of Richelle’s house—and it all adds up to a recipe for disaster…

But once again, just as in the Dead Detective, the first book in the series, some very off-beat characters come to her aid. There’s her love-sick ex-detective partner Malena Ayon, for one, and the long-dead ghost cop Bull McGuinness for another. And Richelle’s equally dead new boyfriend, a dreamy World War I vet cut down in the prime of his youth. Last but hardly least, the roguish old Irish Traveler and scam artist Dicky Dadd, who claims to be Richelle’s vanished father, but who may be something else entirely; a half-Gypsy wizard sent to watch over her by the kriss, or Romani High Council.

On the eve of a second ‘Ripper’ murder at a nearby theme park, Richelle and Malena must race to save an innocent victim’s life—along with that of Tamara—while battling shadowy forces both real and supernatural, as the story builds to a shattering and unexpected climax.

I loved the first book but this one kept me turned around so many times I hardly knew where it was going, The characters are all entertaining, the story is great, the plot came to a decent conclusion and I am sure there will be more, I can hardly wait. The authors weave personal crisis, human interactions, heroic efforts and just plain old entertainment into a amazing story. highly recommended

Deadbeat Dad sounded like an interesting read, even though I’m not really into the whole zombie culture. I don’t mind watching it, but I’m not as fond of reading it. However, this book sounded interesting to so I went for it. Little did I know the protagonist is a different sort of zombie, not one who ate brains for sustenance: she was cursed by her ex-boyfriend with help from his Gypsy girlfriend to become the undead. I was hooked from then on. Quickly, I was drawn in by the fascinating characters, from her “dad” to her ghost friends, who help her in her quests to track down cold cases, or hot ones, depending on which case she is working on. And her baby Tamara was a joy all on her own, especially considering where she came from. There was lively action and an interesting plot. At times the book did seem a little too removed from the action, which made me not feel as close to it as I would have liked, and sometimes the book seemed a little slow, but it was only a few times. And, not reading the first one in the series also wasn’t a big deal. In point of fact, I really want to read the first one to find out how all the things in her life came to be. So, don’t hesitate to pick up this book whether it’s your first by them, or the second. Oh, and their other books are just as fun. Recommend!

Deadbeat Dad: A Dead Detective Novel book 2 by J.R. Rain and Rod Kierkegaard Jr. is the second book in the series but can be read as a stand alone. I didn't read the first book and was not lost but I know I am going to read the first one now! This book has Richelle, a 1/2 dead, 1/2 alive detective, full time mother to the same type of baby, due to a curse, dealing with a supernatural crazy killer that is also stalking her and her baby, ghosts in her life, a man that claims to be her dad that shows up, a habitual liar mother, an ex-husband that goes off the deep end of nutzville and his new wife, trying to tell her partner she is really not alive anymore, and her horrible job in the cold case dungeon. But she has her ghost boyfriend and her friends, alive and dead to help out. It is exciting and a fun read. I received this book from NetGalley for a honest review and it in no way effected my rating or review content.
