'Chicago Challenge Activity Book' by George Toufexis is an activity book that also tells about the city of Chicago in a fun way.
In amongst the coloring pages, mazes and word searches, there is a wealth of information. There were things I knew about, and things I learned. There are notes about famous people and parts of town. There are breakdowns of all the districts and neighborhoods of city. There are facts about the founding of the city and major engineering feats, like changing the flow of a river. There are facts about the food and beaches and things that Chicago is known for.
I was actually surprised by how much is packed into the 51 pages here. I've never been to the city, so I managed to learn quite a lot. I think this would be a fun book for school age kids going on a trip to Chicago. There is lots to do in the pages, and much to enhance the visit.
I received a review copy of this ebook from Dover Publications and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.
I've only been to Chicago once, but I'm from Michigan, so this book interested me. I can see this being fun for kids, older ones though -- maybe 5-7th grade? The activities are fun and entertaining, the history is great (I learned so much!), I love that there's so much you can color if you wanted to. Overall just a really awesome activity book good for schools or those being home schooled. I would recommend this book. 5 out of 5 stars.
The Chicago Challenge Activity Book includes a great range of activities for children visiting, learning about or living in Chicago. While transmitting information about Chicago's history, geography, city divisions, community areas and popular culture, the information never seems like 'too much' but is likewise never condescending. Information is accompanied by a variety of activities including mazes, word searches, crosswords, and word puzzles.
I would love to see different books in this series for different cities.
This is a great activity books for adults and older kids. Perfect for pre-trip relaxation or to keep entertained while on the road (or in the Air). Also, great to extend the excitement of a trip after coming home. Full of activities and facts and trivia it's even great for those that live in Chicago and want to celebrate their city.
*i chose not to review this on my blog for no reason that is the book itself's fault*
This book would work perfectly for grades 5 and up as part of a unit study or as prep before a vacation to Chicago. Or maybe as part of a United States study. Chicago ranks third in population and although I may be biased it’s worth learning the particulars of the major US cities. There are mazes, word searches, and basic coloring pages that all include information about the city and its neighborhoods and landmarks. I especially liked the information about the neighborhoods and that the maps were accurate.
I liked the artwork in that it isn’t juvenile and is almost art deco style which matches most of the downtown architecture.
As for the coloring pages and mazes, I’d say you’d need fine tip markers to complete the pages successfully.
