Description

A New York Times Bestseller
A Forbes Top 10 Conservation and Environment Book of 2016

Read the sea like a Viking and interpret ponds like a Polynesian—with a little help from expert navigator Tristan Gooley, New York Times-bestselling author of How to Read a Tree and The Lost Art of Reading Nature’s Signs

In his eye-opening books The Lost Art of Reading Nature’s Signs and The Natural Navigator, Tristan Gooley helped readers reconnect with nature by finding direction from the trees, stars, clouds, and more. Now, he turns his attention to our most abundant—yet perhaps least understood—resource.

Distilled from his far-flung adventures—sailing solo across the Atlantic, navigating with Omani tribespeople, canoeing in Borneo, and walking in his own backyard—Gooley shares hundreds of techniques in How to Read Water. Readers will:
  • Find north using puddles
  • Forecast the weather from waves
  • Decode the colors of ponds
  • Spot dangerous water in the dark
  • Decipher wave patterns on beaches, and more!

We swimmers don't just like immersing ourselves in water, but reading about it as well. This book is delicious, a naturalist's decoding of the science of the sea. And the pond. And the stream. And the pool. And I learned a new word: "swash." Way cool.

Tristan Gooley has done it again! In his new book, How to Read Water, Gooley invites the reader to explore the endlessly-fascinating world of reading clues in water. It is a wonderfully educational read that will pique your interest and have you examining puddles, streams, and the sea in a way you never looked at them before.

There is so much useful information packed into this book that you will want to read it again and again, just to learn all it contains. How can the direction of a wave tell you where an island is located? Can a reflection in a puddle offer a clue? How can you track a boat that passed through a lake over 20 minutes ago? Can you navigate using just the stars and the water? What can we learn from currents and waves? All this and more is packed into this wonderful book.

There are many useful and easy-to-interpret illustrations provided throughout the text to help you understand the concepts. The book is written in an easy conversational style and everything is explained clearly and succinctly so that no reader is left behind. The concepts can be easily grasped and you can use the reference list at the end for more detailed study, should you wish to learn more.

The subtitle is: “Clues and Patterns from Puddles to the Sea - Learn to gauge depth, navigate, forecast weather, and make other predictions with water”, and that is an appropriate title since you will learn so many clues! This book drew me right in and held my interest. I have enjoyed every one of Gooley’s books that I have had the pleasure to read so far, and I plan to get the two that I haven’t read and devour them next! I highly recommend this, and any other book by Tristan Gooley. I have never been disappointed with his work and you won’t be either. This book will be in my library for years to come.
