Description
She doesn’t remember stopping at the used bookstore, but there she stands as if drawn by an unseen force. Anticipation wraps around her like a cocoon. When she opens the door, the wind nudges her through, and expectancy turns to purpose. The man inside, and the book he offers, changes everything. Unusual things happen when she begins to read:
In a time long forgotten, people are held captive by half human creatures. Ashra holds a secret close to her heart, and must discover the purpose of her gift before the oppressed human race is destroyed. An unlikely ally comes to her aid. Strangers bring her a message from a far off land. Ashra and her band of misfits set off in search of answers. Together, they find love, uncover mysteries from the past, face ever present danger, and hone powers they never knew they had.
Frankie and Ashra are separated by millennia, by fiction and reality, but in the end the barrier shatters.ScheduleScheduleSchedule
Advance Praise
In a great new book by talented author Beth Hammond, The Sound of the Stones, readers are invited into a fantastic world filled with secrets, interesting beings, adventure and excitement. Our protagonist, Frankie, receives a book that tells the story of an era long ago, forgotten in the annals of time, in which people are held prisoner by half human creatures. Ashra, a young woman with a gift, isn't sure if she has what it will take to free humankind, but if she doesn't try, all might be lost. How are Frankie and Ashra connected? You'll need to read the book to find out!
I so, so enjoyed The Sound of the Stones. Author Beth Hammond has done an absolutely fantastic job in creating characters that her readers will relate to, connect with, and continue to think about long after the story is done. If that isn't a hallmark of a great author, I'm not sure what is. Her world creation abilities are second to none, and readers will feel as if they are absolutely a part of the story as they are reading. The main piece of advice I have for readers, besides being sure to pick up this book, is to have enough time set aside to read it from beginning to end; you'll not want to put it down once you start! I highly recommend this book to any reader who loves a strong work of fantasy with a good Christian message. I certainly hope that author Beth Hammond is hard at work on her next offering. I, for one, will definitely be in line to read it!ScheduleScheduleSchedule

This is the first book I've ever read by this author and it's super creative! I love everything about books, so the premise alone was enough to make me love this book. The characters were strong & believable, the dialogue was realistic, and the pacing worked really well. There was never a point where I got too bored or pulled out of the story or anything. I'm not sure if there's going to be a sequel, but I'd like to see one!
Haven't heard of this author before so when I received it from netgalley to review (no compensation) I was excited. I really enjoyed the fantasy and humor in it. I like when there's a story in a story. Makes me feel like it could happen to me! She did a great job with the world building. It did a while remember who all the different characters were. All in all looking forward to the sequel!
4 stars.
Thanks to Netgalley.com for giving me a digital arc of this book to read and review without compensation.
Interesting concept in this book. The book begins in modern time, with a teenage girl in foster care becoming immersed in a book given to her by a mysterious old man. The book then changes into a different world/realm where humans are slaves. Here is where it gets interesting...crystals are the energy source for everything. The are Sensitives, this that can feel the vibrations of crystals. There are other features -benders, giants, Krad, Glasne, and more. This book is fantasy at a high level. Just when you think you have no idea what's going on, Ms. Hammond throws you a nugget, errrr, crystal of information and you slowly begin to realize his the pieces of the story are coming together.
I will say, that since I read this in a digital firmest ARC, it was a little difficult for me to figure out where I was in the book, but I pretty much read it straight through. The are sometimes stern the book and names of characters feel a little kitschy, but I did enjoy this book. If you know someone that likes true fantasy, they will love this book.
Very intriguing book concept. I am looking forward to the next book in the series.
I found the premise to be fascinating. An entire group of people who mine for crystals to give to their oppressors, the Krad. Beings born of humans and other dimensional beings. Ashra is a character whom I enjoyed. The world she inhabits has depth and a great deal of thought put into it. She decides to throws off her shackles to fight back and stop living in fear.
The introduction with Frankie seems really out of place. Her only interaction is that she's reading this book about Ashra and the adventure she goes through. And that's it. There's no mention until the very end of the book.
*An ARC was given in exchange for an honest review. Thank you to the writer and the publisher for the opportunity to read this.*
I enjoyed reading such a beautiful book, captivating and well paced.
This is a hugely creative book with likable characters. I personally have always thought that books are magical, but I never thought of this angle! I am looking forward to the next book in the trilogy!
