Description
Warning: The Candidates: Based on a True Country is not for the faint of heart.
It is a political satire of epic disproportion. The story centers on Skip LaDouche and Harry Pinko, the two front-runners campaigning for the presidency of the United States, who have managed to claw, bribe, and scam their way up the political ladder. They are what we’ve come to expect from our leaders: self-serving and unqualified.
When Kimmy Faimwhorre, the reality television star that they are both having an affair with, turns up murdered, the candidates take campaigning to its most primal form . . . complete and total destruction of the opposition.
Nothing is sacred in this violently comic short novel from Matthew S. Hiley. His wit is sharp and quick, and this story is dark, cynical, and hilarious. Politics-as-usual and pop-culture are thoroughly skewered in one of the most absurd and entertaining stories ever told.

Well what can I say, this book is absolutely barmy, definitely not politically correct, most outrageous and absolutely pure Genius! You certainly need a unique type of sense of humour to appreciate this book, but I just simply cried with laughing time and time again.
Just think political battle for the White House, a scandal that could destroy both candidates and every ploy, plot and mishap that could possibly happen and you aren't even 10% there. Matthew S. Hiley describes everything in great detail which makes this novel very visual to the reader, then add the dry humour and wit plus scenes of total destruction and mayhem and it is just perfection.
I am sure that this novel will be a marmite book with lovers and haters. I am certainly in the loving it camp. If you are easily offended perhaps this novel isn't for you.
I wish to thank Netgalley and Greenleaf Book Group for allowing me to read and review this book in exchange for an honest review.
This book was a fast read and very easy to follow. The characters were well thought out and had me wishing they were real I look forward to reading more from this author.
This is definitely going to be an 'either you hate it or you love it' book but I found it hilarious. The dry, dark humour was so random and funny and the entire plot was, let's just say unique.
Despite the comedy side of the book, I did appreciate the way Hiley put some of the more serious political and social topics in the story. Yes, it was done in a ironic and dark way, but I was impressed that they were still in there.
I've read this book after the US elections and found it too hilarious to be true! Sometimes, reality can be stronger than fiction though. A funny read which make you think a bit seriously but take life as it is because sometimes, all we are left with is a big big smile.
