Description
All her life, she has heard the story of the Princess, cursed to sleep for eternity, unless her betrothed, the Prince of Oran, gave her true love’s kiss. Although Apolline knows she is betrothed, she thinks her fairy guardians arranged it out of ignorance of human ways. The thought she could be a princess is inconceivable.
Then Allard appears. Handsome, charming—but he’s not hers to have. He’s betrothed, too. Her guardians warn her against her new found friendship, but she and Allard meet in secret anyway. Despite her rough exterior, he sees beyond her gun-slinging bravado, and their love blossoms.
But the deadline for the sleeping curse is approaching. If Apolline falls in love with the wrong person, she could end up sleeping forever.
A quirky, adventurous retelling of Sleeping Beauty, with a less than princess-ly princess!

One of the best fairytale retelling I have ever read. Will definitely be looking out for more books by this author
Such a cute and quirky romance it had me intrigued from the very beginning and is so different from all the other fairytale stories. From the blurb I knew it had a sci-fi twist to it but I really loved how well it was done. Not just Cinderella or Snow White but a mix of different fairy tales reimagined.
(I received a copy from Net Galley, in exchange for an honest review)
Princess of Tyrone is a sleeping beauty retelling centred around our main character Apolline who is a huntress who lives with her fairy aunts who is betrothed to marry at 21 to someone she has never met or seen. So when she meets a mysterious Allard everything changes.
Fairy tale retellings are one of my favourite things to read. I just love how a book incorporates a well known story and twists it to make a super exciting plot. However I have never read a sleeping beauty retelling so it was nice to read something a little different, although there are mentions of other fairy tales in this as well which I also liked.
I really liked Apolline as she is a strong and witty main character and I really liked her interaction with Allard. I'm not usually a fan of instant romance between characters but it went at a nice pace. The side characters are great and I loved the overall plot! The world building was super futuristic and interesting but the characters were definitely the highlight for me!
We all know the story of Sleeping Beauty, where a princess is cursed and forced to prick her finger and fall asleep for a thousand years... or until her true love kisses her. We have watched the cartoon version and the one where we hear the other side of the story. If you are like me, you loved them both and if you enjoy reworks of fairy tales, this book is definitely up your alley.
It is a different approach to the story letting the princess get to know a few gentlemen before she falls to sleep. The only issue is the one she is beginning to fall for has already been committed to someone else. What's a sleep destine girl to do?!
I really enjoyed this book and the way the author brought this wonderful tale into a more futuristic setting. The characters from the princess to the princes were funny, brave, and memorable. I fell in love with Apolline's spirit and would definitely recommend this to anyone wanting a good retelling of this classic story.
Wow! What a book! This was an amazing retelling of Sleeping Beauty (you know how much I love a good retelling)! From start to finish, I loved every moment of it. This book gave me all the feels and kept me hooked from the start. It was a little predictable, since it followed the original story pretty closely, but I didn’t mind, because it was really different. I loved that it was on different planets, and the space theme. And the story was so intricately woven into other fairy tales, such as Snow White and Cinderella. I loved how these fairy tales that I loved when I was little (and still do) were like history for Apolline.
Apolline is a huntress, and as such, she is totally badass and cool. She is independent, and loyal. She is loyal to the future husband she has never even met, which is one of the things I loved the most about her. Even though she falls in love with someone else (or so she thinks), she stays true to her betrothed.
I loved following her inner struggles, from fighting her feelings for Allard, to struggling to figure out the truth about herself and who she is. Apolline is an amazing character, and I loved reading about her.
As much as I loved Apolline, though, I might’ve loved Allard even more. He is just so swoon-worthy! His struggles with his feelings for Apolline are so interesting – and heartbreaking – to follow. How he struggles with the expectations of him giving the lost princess Elpida a true love’s kiss to wake her if the plan to keep her safe fails, and how he falls in love with Apolline instead. Allard is the perfect fairy tale prince.
And I loved watching as they fell in love. From the beginning, you can see that they feel something for each other, but it grows stronger throughout the book, and it becomes apparent that they are in love. Usually, I’m not a big fan of insta-love, as it often feels forced and unrealistic, but the way Katie writes it makes it feel real and captivating. I loved it!
This is going to sound weird, but I even loved Bryanna. Okay, she’s the villain, and everyone hates the villain – don’t get me wrong – but sometimes in books, the villain/s are made out to be heartless. Bryanna isn’t. Sure, she does a lot of terrible things. But she still has a heart. She was misled by her mother, and when her mother introduced her to dark magic, she changed. But Bryanna has feelings. She does her very best at pushing them aside, and most of the time, she does a good job at doing it, but it doesn’t change the fact that she has feelings. It’s rare – very rare – to actually feel sympathy towards a villain, but I did.
The plot was a bit predictable, since it followed the original story of Sleeping Beauty pretty closely, but it was still different enough that I can forgive the predictability. This is a darker version of Sleeping Beauty, and I absolutely loved the space theme. The ending was great, it was so cute and sweet and just perfect.
And I have to mention the cover. It is just so incredibly pretty and perfect for this book. I love it!
With layered characters, an intricately woven plot set in an amazing new universe, the author uses an old fairy tale that everyone knows and makes something completely different and yet familiar. I’m impressed! I can’t wait to read the next book, which will use Hansel and Gretel, and how amazing is that?
WOW WOW WOW !!!!!
I absolutely LOVED this book.
This is a retelling of Sleeping Beauty -- not one of my favorite stories-- but this... THIS was so good! The author made Apolline so kickass I loved it. I wish the White siblings had been able to see more of her personality earlier in the story. And speaking of Whites-- the grandchildren of Snow white?!!? TELL ME ONE OF THEM IS THE PROTAGONIST FOR THE SEQUEL!
I digress though, Apolline is kickass but, still needs help from her love here and there. It doesn't make her less though even when the story has to play out. She is still in charge of her life and he loves her for it. While it was kinda inst-love, I'm letting go because I thought the relationship developed pretty well.
--spoiler!--
As for the ending of the conflict I thought it was weird where the bad person's power was kept. I just didn't understand that part. Why was it there? didn't she have magic because having the mirror??
--end spoiler -- Hmmm what else can I speak of. The book cover??? absolutely stunning. That's what drew me to the book in the first place.
Really loved the characters and I'm hoping against hope that we get a book about Nathaniel --although isn't it weird he has one of the only normal-ish looking names?? --
Anyhow, loved the book. Looking forward to the sequel and definitely will recommend this to other people.
This novel was amazing! It was the prefect re-telling of sleeping beauty. It had everything I wanted in a novel. Action, adventure, love and space! This easily makes it onto the top 10 novels I've read in 2016. I can't wait to come back to this universe in the next book in the series to see what happens!
This was an interesting spin on Sleeping Beauty and it was a fun read. The characters were all great, and I especially loved the main two. Despite their different upbringings, Allard and Apolline made a solid couple and I enjoyed reading about them. I also liked the world the author created here, with the different planets and everything futuristic or magical. Watching Allard and Apolline fall for each other while fighting it, was sweet and I couldn't wait to read how they would find out that they were indeed betrothed to the other. The ending was the most exciting, though the whole book had me into and totally enjoying it.
Sleeping Beauty. In Space. With guns.

Apolline is an orphan who was adopted by 3 fairies. She makes a living being a bad-ass huntress. One day, when trading her goods, she meets handsome, witty Allard. They slowly find ways to meet up, but constantly find their feelings because...bum bum bum: they are both betrothed. TO ANOTHER.
The Princess of Tyrone is an utterly unique story that takes Sleeping beauty and melds other fairy Tales (Cinderella, Hansel & Gretel, and Snow White) into this world's history. Of course, as most fairy tales are, it is highly predictable. BUT DON'T LET THAT STOP YOU FROM READING IT. I promise there is enough meat to this book to keep you entertained. We get perspective from the evil witch, wonderful character development, and a of course FAIRY TALES CHARACTERS WITH GUNS IN SPACE!!
Breathtaking writing for the world building. Great characters, with a plot that flows nicely. I'm going to definitely be on the lookout for sequels because I'm in need of finding out how it's going to all come together.
I don't say this a lot, but I can imagine this book being absolutely amazing as a TV show. Usually, producers mess a lot with books and in the end, the movie or the show is completely different than the book. Alright, I guess that could happen with Princess of Tyrone too, but the story, the characters, in my head it was a TV show already. So, please, dear producers or co-workers in the film industry, tell your people about this book, read it yourself and find some actors! This book needs to be heard and if that means airing it on TV, well then there's that.
Being in my twenties now, I find myself less thrilled about fantasy or paranormal books. Somehow, I am not a fan of those anymore. The story has to hook me right from the start in order for me to read it until the end. Luckily, that was the case with Princess of Tyrone. When I was little I knew fairytales, of course, but I wasn't really interested in them. That hasn't changed, but something about the way Katie Hamstead mixed a fairytale story and a galaxy, a future-like story, made me go on and on reading this. I enjoyed that very much.
The time of the story is an interesting thing actually. Because it has a lot of aspects from former centuries, but mainly, I pictured this story happening in the future, considering the planets, the galaxy and the way the people travel. I absolutely loved that. Kinda felt like a YA alien book to me, awesome!
Even if you don't like fairytales that much, you will most likely find aspects that you like about this book. Truth be told, magic is involved in this, yes, but what's exciting is Apolline's journey, finding out the truth about her family, about herself. And that name, come on. All the names in this book are brilliant. I like refreshing names, so well done Katie Hamstead! They didn't seem too extraordinary, but they were just perfect for the characters.
Then there is Allard, whom you will fall in love with, depending on whether you have a weakness for boys in books. I loved getting a sight inside his head, reading about his thoughts. Also, I think his and Beau's friendship fitted the story just right. Considering how Apolline only had her "aunts" to talk to, it seemed fair Allard had a best friend. And what a best friend! At some point of the story I feared he might die. You know how sometimes a background character whom you grew to love dies?! I absolutely hate when that happens. Katie didn't put me through that heartache, phew! *wipes sweat away*
If you wondered about the point of views, there aren't just Apolline's and Allard's as it usually is in other books - two point of views. The evil character in Princess of Tyrone gets her own point of view too. Which was amazing, to be honest. I didn't think I could enjoy it that much, but it fitted the story so well and added a lot of important things: Anger, pity, hate. The plot becomes more thrilling with this.
So, based on how untypical it is for me to like fairytales and everything along with that, I honestly enjoyed this book a lot. Much more than I originally thought. I'm glad to see this is only the first book in the series, because I'd like to know more about Allard's friends. Any chance on reading their story?!

As soon as I saw the cover of this book and read the description, I was hooked. I love re-tellings of fairy tales and steampunk stories, such as, Firefly and The Infernal Devices. And Princess of Tryone did not disappoint.
Hamstead's creation of a space universe with different plants and creatures is incredible. I absolutely loved the way that she stayed true to the Grimm's fairy tales, yet she made them her own. As a writer, Hamstead made each fairy tale identifiable, but with a twist. The focus was on the children of the well known characters, Cinderella, Prince Charming, Snow White, the Evil Queen, but Hamstead did not rely on the original name of the characters. She made them her own by naming them Cytheria, Byranna, and Apolline as Sleeping Beauty. This allowed for the characters to become someone and something else in a whole new story.

This book was a delightful surprise -- Sleeping Beauty as never told before. This is Sleeping Beauty with space pirates, laser guns, a dashing prince (who will capture every reader's heart) and a sassy, spunky Sleeping Beauty who the type of role model that all girls should have. This story drew me in from the start and the fast-paced action kept me turning pages all night long. I loved the characters, the world, the dialogue, everything about this novel. I cannot wait for more Fairytale Galaxy Chronicles. Katie Hamstead is now one of my authors-to-watch.
Everything about this book is worth praising, so much so that my review would have to be way longer to include all of the magnificent things in it. This is the kind of book that should be at the top of everyone's to-read list. It has dynamic characters, a beautiful, poetic love story, a hero and heroine who complement each other and really spark off the pages and it even has a villain you can't help but sympathize with at times. I know that I will certainly be back for as many books as Hamstead wants to write for this series, especially if Apolline and Allard appear in future ones ;)
Thanks to Netgalley and Curiosity Quills Press for giving this book to review.
Princess of Tyrone is a very enjoyable, fun and cute sci-fi retelling of sleeping beauty. It is fast paced and has lots of references to other fairy-tales. However, I did find it predicable and needed a bit more world building.
Apolline is strong, daring and is able to stand up for herself, but she is also sarcastic, a tomboy, honest and honourable. Allard is genuine, friendly and charming, he is also really relatable as he wants to be the best king he could possibly be.
I liked the villain Bryanna as she was understandable and I could see how she became who she was. There are lots of supporting characters like the fairies, Sophronia, Fantine and Ashlan, the father figure, Charlie, and Beau and Nathanial who I hope we get to see more of in future books.
I am looking to reading the next book in the Fairytale Galaxy Chronicles, Myths of Mish. I would recommend Princess of Tyrone to fans of The Lunar Chronicles by Marissa Meyer.
