In the port city of Fortaine, two young girls acquire new families.

Four-year-old Eawynn, the unwanted illegitimate daughter of an ambitious noble, is dumped in the temple. When she is old enough, she will be initiated into its sisterhood of priestesses. Meanwhile Matt, the street urchin, earns a crime lord’s admiration, so much so he adopts her as his daughter and heir to his underworld clan.

Nearly two decades later, their paths cross when Eawynn is appointed custodian of the Shewstone, the mystical orb of prophecy. Unfortunately for her, Matt is on a mission to steal it.

A Note From the Publisher

Jane Fletcher is a GCLS award-winning writer and has also been short-listed for the Gaylactic Spectrum and Lambda Literary awards. She is author of two ongoing sets of fantasy/romance novels: the Celaeno series—The Walls of Westernfort, Rangers at Roadsend, The Temple at Landfall, Dynasty of Rogues, and Shadow of the Knife; and the Lyremouth Chronicles—The Exile and The Sorcerer, The Traitor and The Chalice, The Empress and The Acolyte, and The High Priest and the Idol.

Her love of fantasy began at the age of seven when she encountered Greek Mythology. This was compounded by a childhood spent clambering over every example of ancient masonry she could find (medieval castles, megalithic monuments, Roman villas). Her resolute ambition was to become an archaeologist when she grew up, so it was something of a surprise when she became a software engineer instead.

Born in Greenwich, London, in 1956, she now lives in southwest England where she keeps herself busy writing both computer software and fiction, although generally not at the same time.

I'm a huge Jane Fletcher fan so I was very excited to get my hands on this book. The premise is really interesting and original. Romance isn't at the forefront but I didn't mind as the plot is very engaging, especially towards the end. As an adventure novel the book is really gripping, but unfortunately the fantasy element is lacking compared to the author's previous works, mainly because she introduces some interesting concepts but doesn't really explore them - the world building lacks the depth and detail of her previous books. And unfortunately the same could be said for character development. I did wonder if The Shewstone was initially developed as a series and then squashed into one novel. I hope the author turns this book into a series and explores the characters and the world she's created in more detail.

A well told tale with adventure, intrigue, mystery, humor and the inevitable attraction between Eawynn and her sometimes nemesis Matt. As a child, her aristocratic father abandoned Eawynn to the harsh sisters of the temple, where when she comes of age she becomes Dutiful Sister Custodian to the Shrewstone. Young Matt ran from abuse and was adopted by a master criminal who mentors her skills at theft. Matt is tasked with stealing the Shrewstone for a client of her surrogate father. As the quest continues, each woman though proficient at her own craft, must rely on the other’s skills. Reliance on expertise does not mean trust with the heart. The adventures and humorous sagas make this an enjoyable and engaging story.
