As soon as this book came through to me for review yesterday I had to open it and have a look. I am a huge fan of knitting and have recently started making my own knitted toys so I was really keen to see what this book had to offer. My favourite pattern has to be the ladybird and will definitely be going that one a go. A couple of others will be looking to make too and the patterns seem easy enough to follow. Nice layout and clear, clean sharp photos.
I'm a sucker for a cute knitted toy pattern, so this book - full of 20 of them - immediately drew me to it. These are all so cute, and can be created by knitters of all abilities. I may just have to try all of them, although the fire engine, pig and cake, and gorgeous dog who reminded me of Gromit from Wallace and Gromit will be top of that list. The instructions are clear, concise, and cover all angles. Overall, a lovely pattern book.

Knitted Toys: 20 Cute and Colorful Projects by Jody Long is a book with cute knitted toy patterns. The book has instructions and images of the final project. I love the wide variety of toys to make. I'm not very good at knitting but I would like to try my best effort at making these adorable toys. There was a variety of toys from a fire engine, to several animals. The instructions are clear and straight forward.
I received this advanced readers copy from Dover Publications via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This book has clear and easy directions how to knit many different toys to delight children. There is a wide assortment of toys from which to choose.
I loved how the pages have a knitting theme. The book is well organized and the instructions are easy to follow. The toys are a little different than your mainstream teddy bears. Who would think to knit a bee as a toy?
I am deputy team leader of a charity knitting group and am always on the lookout for patterns and ideas that will make our endeavours stand out from the rest, so I was delighted to get a copy of this book to peruse with my group of Norfolk Knitters. We loved the patterns!! The fire engine in particular created a stir and the animals were well received. We have spent the last 18 months doing a fund raising project based around a butterfly garden and know only too well how difficult it can be to find patterns of animals, flowers etc, and so many new ideas in this book will help us with our Xmas projects, it's a case of needles at the ready!! Thank you so much for the chance to review this book, only marked down to a 3 star as we have to work out -American sizes and wool weights.
Absolutely adorable projects with detailed instructions. As usual, Dover includes color photographs of each finished project. Explanations of stitches, tips, and materials needed introduce the projects. However, this book, at least the eVersion, is not for the novice knitter. The initial stitch instructions are difficult to follow without pictures in the eVersion, especially for visual learners.
A lovely mixture of patterns here. Bright, clear photographs of the finished item, a complete abbreviation list, and clearly set out patterns, with colour matched headers help to define the separate components.
While I haven't tested any of the patterns I do have yarn looked out for the octopus!
This is a delightful book that has 20 patterns of cute baby toys. The patterns are easy to read and the illustrations are colorful and clear. Many of the toys are knit in sections and then put together by sewing. I think any experience level of knitter will find something they could work on. Any grandma knitter will enjoy this book.
This is a lovely and useful knitting book for any knitter who wants to make a special toy for that special child in her, or his life. Or children!
Jody Long's book, "Knitted Toys: 20 Cute and Colorful Projects" lives up to its name. These are really cute patterns, ranging in difficulty from beginning (the snake pattern) to experienced (the airplane). A toy pattern for every level, which is very important in a book such as this. And just in time for Christmas knitting.
These toys would probably be big sellers at holiday bazaars and craft festivals. Well worth the time to make.
I found the pattern instructions and photographs to be clear and easy to understand. Ms. Long gives detailed directions about what materials to use, and plus thinks of the cost involved in making these projects. And she suggests materials that are very easy to find at any local hobby store. Very considerate of her.
This is a really excellent niche knitting book and I look forward to making some of the toys!
Knitted Toys by Jodi Long was such a cute book! Great for any knitting club or a mom or grandmother who just wants to make great gifts for her kids or family members. Long does a good job with directions although I don't recommend this book for beginners. Definitely for more advanced knitters.
I was very excited to receive this book. This is for intermediate to advanced knitters. The item I most like, and will get the most use from is the eyes (just 5 rows) - a reusable part for MANY future projects.
This book has some great inspirational patterns within it's covers. While the pattern selection is extraordinary...the pictures are not as detailed as expected. The first pattern I knitted was the Toadstool, from the Henry the Hedgehog pattern. I knitted several of these in a variety of neon colors, using various needle sizes. A gift for a neighbor's daughter...she loves fairies and these are their homes.
My favorite pattern is the Ruby the Russian Doll. My first-time working with the intarsia technique; it is a work-in-progress. I am hoping to make a few of these soft-plush dolls for donation to the children hospital.

Interesting easy to follow knitted toys. My favorites were Artie the airplane, Rio the fish, Ruby the Russian doll, Sebastian the starfish
Great book, with lots of great ideas to knit. The instructions were easy to understand, very impressed with this book
Jody Long’s first knitting book is a grand-slam! This book is everything a knitter wants in a book of patterns. There are 20 different patterns included. Each of them have clear, easy to read and understand instructions. The amount of yarn, other supplies and gauge are included to help new and experienced knitters succeed.
There are smaller, easier projects like Squishy Beach Balls and Sebastian the Starfish. Some patterns have color work, which I personally love to do. The instructions are easy to follow even for a beginner. This could be the perfect time to try intarsia if you haven’t before.
At the beginning of the book there are several pages of information and definitions. Be sure to read them. A needle conversion is included, UK and US needles are both listed. The amounts of yarn (with suggestions as to the type to use if you aren’t using the exact yarn as the author) are listed in yards and meters as well as ounces and grams depending upon what country you are knitting in or more comfortable with.
Most knitting books have one or two patterns that are cute. Every single one of these 20 knitted toys are adorable. It is hard for me to highlight a few favorites, but here goes – and this does not by any stretch of imagination mean I don’t like the others.
The first one I plan on knitting is Mrs. Hopper the Rabbit. She is absolutely charming, wearing a sweater and holding a basket with carrots inside. She is 11 inches tall and will make a perfect gift for Easter.
Primrose the Nighttime Teddy has a nightcap and nightgown and Rusty the Puppy looks so squishy and cute I can just see a toddler cuddling up with these two for a nap.
Most knitters have yarn in their stashes with would more than complete one or more of these terrific toys. The patterns would make perfect take-a-long projects because each piece can easily be stashed in a purse or backpack. I like to knit during my lunch hour at work and will definitely be carrying these projects with me .
I highly recommend this book.
DISCLOSURE OF MATERIAL CONNECTION: I have a material connection because I received a review copy for free from NetGalley that I can keep for consideration in preparing to write this content. I was not expected to return this item after my review.
This book has easy-to-follow instructions--assuming the reader is a moderately experienced knitter--for making some cute toys. In addition, the techniques can be used for a variety of knitting projects beyond sweaters, scarves and gloves. However, in my opinion, these toys will not excite much interest among children. They will be treasured, or not, according to affection for the knitter. So get this book if you want to have fun expanding your knitting horizons, but don't imagine you're going to compete with Barbie or Pillow Pets.
All patterns written for acrylic DK, Jody Long used Stylecraft Special DK [link] for the projects but says that any good quality acrylic DK would be suitable (and he even offers advice of checking yarn quantities for other brands) Plenty of technical advice before the patterns
The patterns themselves are fun and colourful and clearly written. They don’t require complicated techniques and should be as fun for you to make as for the recipient to play with. From Dippy the Duck with a rubber ring and Freddie the Fire Engine, complete with a knitted 3D ladder, to Primrose the Teddy who is ready for bed with her nightgown and cap. these patterns have lots of detail making them special gifts.
Speaking as someone with young nieces and nephews, if you have children to knit for this is a very useful book.
