I really like this book!
Not only does it offer a number of wonderful ideas for beautiful origami jewelry but it also gives detailed and easy to follow instructions on how to make them. Due to the origami style not all of the jewelry is fitting for a grown woman, especially some hairpins are more suitable for kids but it all depends on the occasion and your own style.
Probably most of the jewelry won't last for ages but it makes for beautiful eyecatchers and allows a very individual style.
Apart from that it is fun to create the tiny charms and to play around with different papers and the different models to create unique jewelry that doesn't cost much but is fun to create and fun to wear!
Origami Jewelry by Mayumi Jezewski is a book about beautiful origami jewelry that gives easy to follow instructions. The jewelry style are for all ages. Some for kids. Some for teenagers. Some for young adults. Lastly, some for adults. The jewelry will not last for ever but what I like most is that it can be made to fit your style. It am not very good at origami but I found it fun to create some of the jewelry.
I received an advance reader edition of this book from Dover Publications via NetGalley for the purpose of providing an honest review.
Once upon a time I used to make jewelry, and towards the end of my jewelry career I blended my love of jewelry and origami, it just seemed natural. This book is a good introduction to both of those forms of art, fairly easy jewelry techniques and simple origami forms, of course what the real challenge is is making origami small, this takes a little practice, but once you get the hang of minigami these are very smooth pieces to make.
My only complaint with this book is it not covering what I consider to be a necessary step in origami jewelry creation, finishing with a varnish. If you get caught in the rain, wear it on a particularly hot day, or spill liquid on a piece it is pretty much done, and that can be immensely frustrating, so really treating the pieces with a waterproof paper varnish is a must unless you are planning this as a possible one time wear. Even using the most basic modge podge will extend the life.
Other than that omission I recommend this book to those new to either jewelry or origami!
We enjoy Dover Publications art and craft books. However, the eVersion was difficult to follow. Originally published in French, a number of French pages were included in this eVersion, interspersed among the English language pages. We couldn't be sure which text was associated with which diagram. Photographs in a pretty pastel color palette appear throughout the book, along with detailed instructions. We had to check Amazon's "look inside the book" to gauge the actual layout with text. We look forward to seeing the hard copy version. Visually appealing, this is a welcome addition to your papercrafting or jewelry-making library.
Great projects with easy to follow instructions. However, it doesn't give instructions on how to preserve your paper jewelry. That would have made this book complete.
Beautiful jewelry ; easy to follow steps ; different styles ; Fun to create
For those of us who are beginners in doing the craft, origami, you will find this an easy to follow book. Between the written instructions and the pictures illustrating the steps, you should be able to make some lovely items of jewelry. Definitely a book to keep on hand for those times when you need a gift.
Tiny, incredibly detailed origami creations make for beautifully dainty jewelry! Stylish and unique, these ideas will serve to allow your creative juices to produce exquisite hair clips, bracelets and more.
I love to see excellent well thought out craft books I am certain that even a novice could pick up this book and make beautiful origami jewelry!!!
A beautiful instructional book on the art of origami jewelry suitable for beginners and season origami artists. The book begins with a list of materials needed with numbered photos of each material example. next, it thoroughly explains the different mounting techniques used in making jewelry. There is an illustrated description of each origami fold and terminology. There are 36 projects outlined with step by step instructions as well as diagrams of the technique and progressive photographs from beginning to finish. The book is very well planned out and very easy to use, an excellent addition to any craft library.
Lots of sweet, fun ideas for using origami in jewelry making. While the examples shown in the photos don't look as the they've had any type of sealer applied, some information on how to do so would be welcome for those who would like to make sure their creations last as long as possible. Also, to me it seems some previous experience in making origami would help, as the instructions might be confusing for a novice. Overall, I would definitely recommend this book to anyone looking to expand their jewelry making techniques or to find more uses for their origami creations.
A really cute craft book. There are great easy to follow instructions for basic jewelry making included that you can apply to many projects. Add the special craft of origami, and you can make some endearing jewelry pieces. There are so many origami papers, in so many colors and styles that you can make several pairs of each.
It's hard to choose favorites, but I do especially like the iris and butterfly and the little stars are so dear! The finished examples shown make you want to make each and every piece - and extra to share with friends and relatives.
A very economical way to increase your jewelry and match all your outfits. Just don't lose the book, as I can see wanting to make more as time and outfits change. And I'm sure I will be watching the origami papers and find many I can't resist!
I think these pieces would be attractive to many ages. And I bet you could sell some finished sets on Etsy or Facebook.
Disclosure of Material Connection: I received this book free from the Dover Publications and Netgalley book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the Federal Trade Commission’s 16 CFR, Part 255 “Guides Concerning the Use of Endorsements and Testimonials in Advertising.”
Gorgeous images are what attracted me to the book. However, executing this into jewelry where I'd need to install jump rings and other attachments increase the difficulty and potentially damage my origami piece.
Would have loved an additional section on how to create more permanence/heartier paper jewelry or even alternate materials (cardstock? flexible plastic?) to create sturdier pieces to keep.
Dover Publications and NetGalley provided me with an electronic copy of Origami Jewelry, in exchange for an honest review.
Origami Jewelry is a well illustrated, instructional guide to making jewelry out of origami paper. Along with a comprehensive materials list and mounting techniques, the author explains key terms with illustrations. Each distinct shape has a materials list for different jewelry pieces corresponding to the shape, instructing readers to several key pages that show how to put the finishing touches on your creations. I am an amateur when it comes to the art of origami, but this book is so inviting and well instructed that I would recommend it to those of all experience levels.
This book is a combination of two cool crafting hobbies-- origami and jewelry. The author shows great care in selecting fun projects to achieve an beautiful. artifacts that combine these two seemingly disparate fields. One thing that would be nice is to see a picture of people wearing the jewelry, just to give the pieces some sense of scale. Otherwise, this book is very thoughtful, aesthetically put together, and enjoyable to follow along with.
This is a delicate, well-designed and enjoyable book for all ages and beginner to intermediate folders of origami. The white-space shows off the designs very well. The colors add to the uplifting feeling and ease of reading and viewing the examples. It not only covers the actual paper folding, but also provides the information on how exactly to take the finished folded product to the next step of actually being a piece of jewelry. It also offers more than one way to use the designs. The level of detail is excellent, taking the folder from beginner to intermediate. I can see all ages enjoying this book and it would be a very fitting present for any reader and crafter. I definitely would recommend this delightful book.
I would like to thank Dover Publications for providing me with a free electronic ARC of this book, via Netgalley, in exchange for an open and honest review.
Please note this book was actually reviewed by my 11 year old daughter and resident origami artist. Although I am writing the review, I am basing it on the feedback she has provided to me. And the score out of 5 stars is all her!
My daughter – known as Eldest Horde online – really liked this book. She liked the outlay of the pictures – formatting, how the instructions were set out, etc. As well as the pictures of the origami jewellery and props (little ceramic animals and the like) that were used. She felt these pictures and props really made her want to try and make things just as pretty.
The instructions for each project were clear and easy to follow. As my daughter has been doing some origami for a while, she followed the picture instructions more than the written instructions, but did also refer to the written instructions if she got stuck.
The book inspired Eldest Horde to make more origami and turn it into different gifts for her friends and family by making it into jewellery as shown in ‘Origami Jewelry’. Quick and easy little projects, perfect for rainy days like the one we’ve had today.
Would I recommend this book to others?
Yes I would. It is the perfect little book of ideas to amuse crafty hands of all ages. It contains clear and precise instructions that talk you through each project – suitable for your novice through to the more experience paper folder.
Would I buy this book for myself?
Not for myself… but Eldest Horde has asked this be put on my Amazon wish list so I remember to buy it for her next time she needs a new craft book. Not so subtle hints about Christmas coming up too! ;-)
In summary: A great book showing how to turn tiny little origami into simply beautiful homemade jewellery.
I loved this book! The projects are adorable and so cute! It made me want to get my paper out and immediately start making jewelry. I think it will be a big hit and I already know someone in my family that would love a copy. I'm planning on putting together a little kit for her and making this her Christmas present! Love all the projects in here!!
Having thought I was able to handle some more advanced origami, (I can already make a frog, box and lotus) I picked a few items at random and started. Let's just say that the book is a lot better than my results would have people believe.
Some great ideas, clearly shown and explained. You can easily pass a good few hours making them in what feels like ten minutes.
Ideal for adults or kids, but not too young as you need to be fairly dexterous. I think I need to get back to it and get some more practice in!
This was everything I hoped it would be. Excellent directions both written and with images. Beautiful photos. A full list of items needed for each piece. The instructions are very clear.
