Description
Dark Romance Novel, sensitive topics—highlighted with religious elements (hope in the face of hell).
Finding herself stranded in a new city, eighteen-year-old Ember Bloom thought she’d reached her all time low. She was wrong. A mindless walk to a dead-end job landed her in the path of her gambling fathers’ enemies. Her only defense was a stranger, Slayton Winslow, a known enforcer and fighter—rumored to be Odin’s prince, underground royalty. On sight, Slayton stole her breath and rushed her heart. Slayton’s enigmatic attraction to her, how stoically he shielded her only churned Ember’s attraction to the bad boy who had given her safe haven in a real life hell. The draw to him, how he could reach her without saying a word, gave her a reason to fight, to awaken. She knew every second could be their last in the city seeded with treacherous deceit and life threatening power plays.

5 unprepared dark and perfect stars!! Prepare yourself this book will eat you up and spit you out. I couldn't sleep I had to read. The first half of the book I thought "what a tease", it was sweet and all but the 2nd half blew me out of the water. In the end two broken souls find each other and repair the only way they know how...
Ember Bloom grew up with nothing and ended up with a paranoid, gambling, alcoholic, hustling and pretty much worthless father (who I kept wishing would just get his shit together). Said father brought the bad guys around but Ember knew the rules, without knowing the danger. And well Slayton was danger. But the best kind of danger she would ever meet. Ok so it was instant love but he protected her when he didn't have to. How long can this criminal keep her safe from the guys he answers to?!?! And can she trust him?!?!
Slayton just wants out. He is over this criminal life. He fought (literally) to just remain above water. And then one job lead him straight to an angel herself. But will she trust such a dark soul? He will fight and protect her until his last breath. But will that be enough?!?!
Swoon..."Odin's princes never fall".
I love SLAYTON!! I wish Ember could have cut the cancer aka her dad out of her life. I mean the shit he caused destroyed a part of her soul. Uggh!!! And I want to add tho I despise Channing for some very poor choices by the end I think I may have a little swoon spot left for that dirty boy.
This book started off a little predictable but that was just to lead you to so much more. This book kept taking me here and then there and then here until I was shaking with anticipation. I had no clue where this was going. And it took me down a very dark path. Oh how I loved it!!
This author pulled me into this life and clearly outlined the stakes for this game. Except the terms of this game changed and things got crazy. This is a very recommended read.
Do not expect rainbows and puppies. You will get dark souls and dirty minds, and you may not have knew it but you will like every minute of it.
** I received this book as an ARC from Patchwork Press - Cooperative via NetGalley and in return I gave my honest review**
I felt like I was watching a horror flick with the clueless chick who happens to walk into the wrong place. And I am screaming noooo don't go, but she never listens.
Ember upset me many times through the book due to her lack of awareness and common sense. Worse was her father and his selfishness that sucked her into a world that being clueless will get you killed. I also grappled to understand Slayton and why he would protect her like he did when he got nothing for it. His POV was enlightening and added so many layers to the story. As the story progressed, I wanted to know more about him, but was given just enough to string me along. From Slayton's pov onward, the story became hard to read, hard because of the underworld that was painted. There were several unexpected twists that I did not see coming, and several times where I found myself holding my breath in anticipation.
This book is well written. The pacing was fast at times and seemed to level out and then speed up again. As told in the description, the content is dark and may be hard to stomach at times. It is even harder to think that women actually endure this type of treatment and there is no escape for them or their children. 4.5 stars
