This pattern book could easily be understood by beginning crocheters. It has both written and diagram patterns for every design. The first 20+ pages are filled with information about how to choose the best color, yarn size and fibers. How to combine designs to make a pattern one of a kind. And so much more helpful information.
I'm loving this book! I have already had the chance to use this book for edging in 3 different projects. Two were gifts and the giftees were amazed that I could do that...I was too. I have done really simple finishes and was leery of a fancier looking edge, but as nice as they look, they are nowhere near as complicated or hard as I thought. This would be an excellent gift for anyone into crochet, that is still learning. the easy instructions will make them feel like a pro. Definitely on my gifting list for at least 3 friends.
What a fantastic resource Every Which Way Crochet Borders: 139 Patterns for Customized Edgings by Edie Eckman for crocheters is!
The patterns are clear and varied, the photos are crisp and detailed and the book itself is well organized. The edge patterns all have diagrams as well, which is a wonderful touch. For a crocheter looking for nice border patterns, this book is an absolute gem. I know personally that when I am looking for a border pattern to give my project a finishing touch it can be hard to find a good one. The edging patterns here are unique and varied, there are plenty of ideas.
The book starts off with “design concepts” discussing colors, yarns and frequently asked border questions and “crocheted border mechanics” . There is even information on how to add crocheted borders onto knitted projects, non woven fleece and woven fabrics. Come on now. It is too much in the best kind of way. There is a troubleshooting section and tips on invisible joining. Its like she includes information and tips I didn’t even know I wanted to know about.
She also has a helpful section on multiplying stitches: “Take the number of stitches on one side, subtract by the “plus” number, then divide by the multiple.”
There are tips on fudging stitch counts for when you just have to adjust your stitches so that it works out nicely anyway. There is so much more in this pattern book, it is very thorough.
I whipped up a potholder using a simple granny square pattern just so that I could try out one of Edie Eckman’s border patterns. I found the edging patterns are easy to follow and a great finishing touch.
There is an appendix explaining stitch symbols in detail and a stitch key, crochet terms plus help on reading charts! Can you sense my excitement? And, there is a glossary of terms at the end of the book for reference, with details and diagrams to make it all crystal clear. Fantastic overall. I need a hard copy of this one for my shelves as this is a pattern book I can see referring to again and again. I love finding crochet pattern books that cover all the bases like this does. Designer Edie Eckman truly does fantastic work here.
This is an EXCELLENT resource for crocheters, both beginners and experienced. I was very pleased by the clarity of the instructions, the (amazing) photographs, and the extra hints added. Not only does Edie clearly show how to add a plethora of borders to crochet projects, but she gives ideas for design, color placement, and yarn choice as well. There are troubleshooting boxes and helpful tips scattered throughout the book. Since I only recently picked up my crochet hooks again (I'm usually a knitter), I found a lot of helpful insights on things that had been frustrating me (like, WHY will that square not lie flat?!?) and have picked up some very useful things to try.
As a very visual learner, the photography was a huge point for me. There are oodles (yes, oodles) of pictures in this book. I want to reach through the pages and feel the stitches. There are individual pictures for each step of difficult or previously unexplained stitches. Also most, if not all, of the borders include written and charted instructions.
The only downside is that the photographs and instructions are all only from a right-handed perspective, so lefties will (as usual) be left to attempt to mirror for themselves. Not a huge issue to anyone well-used to the way knitting and crochet books are written, but still worth noting. I'm a left-handed crocheter myself, and while fairly new to the craft, didn't have any trouble reversing anything in the book.
Many thanks to NetGalley for providing a free copy in exchange for an honest review!
Edie Eckman is my go-to crochet authority, and a new book by her is always a treat. I also love edgings and borders, so this book is a double pleasure. Done in beautiful colors, with excellent charts, Edie’s latest offering is a winner.
The introductory section is excellent, although I would expect that from an Edie Eckman book. It begins with a thorough discussion of form vs function, the uses of scale in a project, the way that color changes the look of an individual border, the effects of different yarns and weights, and how to attach crocheted edgings on different fabrics. Edie shows how to customize borders by changing or combining them, discusses the importance of swatching, describes various problems in working borders and gives their solutions, shows how to fudge if you have to (and we all have to at one time or another), and gives two methods for ending a round. There is a helpful note for British crocheters on the different terms for stitches, and a quick start guide for those of us who are impatient.
What can I say about the borders themselves except that they are glorious? Each edging is accompanied by an excellent chart and written instructions for crocheters like me who find the charts to be too hard to follow. The selection of borders is excellent; no matter what your project you will find a suitable border in this compendium. One border looks like little frogs (so cute), and several look almost tatted. Thick borders, thin borders, lacy borders, firm borders, if you need it, she’s got it.
There is an excellent appendix after the borders. In it Edie describes how to read crochet patterns, and how to use and understand the charts. There is a glossary for crochet terms, and instructions on how to make various stitches. There is a handy little directory of all of the edgings in full color, and an index.
For anything you wish to border in crochet, from a delicate lawn handkerchief to a king-sized afghan, you need look no further than this book. Edie Eckman has done it again. Give yourself and your possessions a treat and immerse yourself in “Every Which Way Crochet Borders.”
I was given an ARC from the publisher and NetGalley for my honest opinion.
A really well-thought out and interesting book. Each of the patterns is clearly laid out, with an easy reference system. I dare you to have a project that isn't complimented by one of the borders.
I'm very pleased yo review this book for NetGalley. I'm a spinnner, knitter, love to crochet and I weave, so this is perfect for my book list. I love the style of the layout and the photography is great, clear, crisp modern and very helpful. Good idea to explain with a photo how a plain fabric can be enhanced with a special border, changing it's appearance in a simple way. Also a section on colour and scale and good examples of this in pics. Yarn is important to me, it's why I spin, so pointing the value of choosing the right yarn for the border appealed to me very much. Ideas for combing borders and excellent description of how to do stitches, you will be able to crochet new style borders effortlessly.
Filled with lots of different border designs, it's an inspiring read and a book to keep for years . Do read it, you will learn so much!
This book is full of Edie Eckman's brilliance! I have every book she has produced, and they are a valuable reference that I often refer to while crocheting. She is the best crochet writer ever. I will add this to my personal library, and encourage the library to purchase some as well.
Edie has several books on motifs and borders, and this one is not a repeat of her other books, but has fresh border patterns. The charts, photographs and instructions are all clear, effective and very helpful in achieving the pattern designs listed. She uses colors to illustrate the stitches, and has a helpful section on adapting patterns to different sized projects. The title says 138 patterns, but there are actually more inside.
I thought that this book had wonderful pictures and easy to read instructions.
This is the book for crocheters everywhere. Finally there is a book which shows the possibilities of finishing off a project with something other than a plain or fringed edge. With interesting colors, the author gives options to a wide array of borders, which can be used to finish off crochet, knitting as well as fabrics. The diagrams (along with instructions) are easy to follow. Edie Eckman provides helpful information to create a beautiful edge. One of the best books I have seen out there for edging projects.
I have Edie Eckmans Around The Corner Crochet Borders and thought nothing could top it. This book is also brilliant, easy for new and experienced crocheting. All borders are explained and in different colours to show you what they look like. Each border is written clearly etc , have tried 6 already and they turned out beautiful. At the start of the book there is ideas on which border suits which type of crochet. Would highly recommend this book.
This was book has easy to follow patterns and has an edging for every project you will ever want to do.
What a great book. There are so many borders, ones I never thought of. The instructions are clear and concise. The pictures are so helpful, especially with the hints and instructions inside the picture. The tips and hints are very helpful, as well, including tips on choosing colors. This is the perfect book to help the crocheter find different ways to finish their projects. I recommend this book for crocheters.
This title will be a great resource for those who always turn to the same handful of crochet borders. Eckman begins with basics of crochet borders onto a variety of base fabrics and then jumps into creativity far beyond the simple foundation. I’m slowly working on adding a border to a fleece blanket, once I progress past my first round, I’ll need to make a decision one which border from the vast catalogue provided. The attention to detail makes this book stand out, with clear photos, easy to spot categorizations of each border (wide/narrow, reversible, textured, etc.), instructions in both written and charted form, and more. I hope to provide a more detailed review when the book is available.
Every Which Way Crochet Borders by Edie Eckman contains 138 patterns for Customized Edgings. As a knitter and crocheter I've always loved the look of these two crafts when combined to make unique and lovely designs. Borders can be functional and or decorative as Eckman shows us with her lovely variety of edgings. Eckman shows a very clever technique for turning a border into jewelry for a fun look. Framing your work with colorful borders can take you projects to new heights. Putting decorative borders on fleece and woven material is demonstrated. Patterns are shown in text as well as diagrams making it easy to follow and learn. A book full of colorful ideas and inspiration, this book would make a great addition to any knitters and or crocheters library. I see several options to use on a baby blanket I'm presently working on. Bound to take your creations to the next level! The spiral binding is always a big plus with me.
I received an advanced copy of this book in digital format for my honest review.
This is an excellent book on borders. I can't wait to use them on the blanket I am currently making.
Edie Eckman shows you how to do simple and very complex border patterns and how to incorporate them into your item. She teaches you the mechanics of doing a border. How to customized them for your project and how to make them stand out. How to widen a border or narrow a border. This has full color pictures and detailed designs. There is even a wonderful index in back with pictures of all the different borders.
This was a great instructional book for any skill level. I have been crocheting for a long time, but I would say I am still just a novice and borders have always been particularly difficult for me. This book helped me significantly improve my borders and get those finishing touches on my projects!
Every Which Way Crochet Borders is a must have book for anyone who crochets. It gives very clear and concise explanations of crochet terms and how to incorporate a border on a variety of projects. The organization of the material makes the book easy to use. There is a lot of information on yarn types and choosing the correct weight. There is also very helpful information on how to choose colors that work well together. I really like that it gives the pros and cons of using various types of borders for different projects. The book continues by showing a great variety, over 100 patterns, of borders and gives detailed instructions on how to crochet them. I was amazed at the variety of different styles of borders. The patterns range from beginner to more advanced crochet techniques. Some of them look really difficult but in reading the clear directions they are not as difficult as they look. I used the puff shell pattern to create a border on a simple scarf and found it extremely easy to follow directions with no errors noted. There are many more patterns I will be using in the future. I believe this book will be an invaluable resource for many years to come for me and anyone who loves to crochet.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for my honest review.
A must have for anyone who loves to crochet. So many fun patters to put that final touch on a project.
This is an incredible resource book for anyone (crocheters, knitters, sewers, etc.) who uses crochet borders. This subject sounds so mundane, but borders are vitally important in fiber arts crafting.
This book delivers in a big way. Ms. Eckman is so clear in her explanations and descriptions along with the excellent photos and illustrations. I am mainly a knitter, but I use crochet borders in my knitting and this book vastly expands my repertoire of edge finishes.
A must have for any respectable fiber arts resource library. Great book - I highly recommend it for anyone who wants to learn how to make crocheted borders.
I am happy to learn about the different crochet border patterns. This is a must buy book for crochet lovers......
Received an advance reader copy in exchange for a fair review.

Super easy to follow instructions! I enjoyed the variety!
This book contains many lovely borders to crochet. The instructions are well written and concise.
As an avid crocheter, I am always interested in learning new techniques, and this was NO different! Learning how to do all these different edgings was great, and I found a couple new favorites in this book!
This was the first Edie Eckman book I've interacted with and definitely not the last. One of my favorite projects now after reading this book is buying cute fleece blankets (you know, those ones you can get at walmart for less than $3?!) And adding cute crochet borders on them!
