Description

The dream of owning a private home became a reality for many Americans in the prosperous years immediately following World War I. But not all prospective homeowners could easily afford the services of an architect, so the nonprofit Architects' Small House Service Bureau was organized in the 1920s to provide plans and other technical documents. This book of the Service's housing plans is a complete republication of a rare edition, containing floor plans, construction materials, and drawings or photographs for a wide variety of small homes.
Models range from charming five-room English cottages of brick and stucco to attractive two-story shingled Colonials with six rooms, fireplace, French doors, and a generous attic. Clearly written descriptions of interiors and exteriors complement detailed plans for each of 254 homes. Remarkable for their spacious and well-lit rooms, ample closets, large basements, and eat-in kitchens, many of these models also offer sun rooms, fireplaces, open porches, and second-story "sleeping porches." Richly illustrated with over 800 black-and-white line drawings and photographs, this attractive, modestly priced edition will appeal not only to builders and restorers of older houses, but also to professional architects, students, and anyone interested in distinctively American homes of the early twentieth century.

If you have every lived in an older neighborhood, or loved to visit them, then this book is for you. I agree up in a neighborhood developed in the 1920s. Heck, my dad helped build some of those houses, so looking through this book reminds me of the houses long gone, in some places.

This book gives floor plans, and photos of the finished house. You couldn't build a house with this book, but you can look at all the amazing photos of houses from the 1920s. My grandmother lived in one such house, and it was expanded over the years, so it ended up not being that small a house in the end.

There are a lot, 254, plans and photos, so if this isn't your thing, move along, no need to dwell on this book. But if you want to see the original "tiny houses" then this is a nice trip.

Thanks to Netgalley for making this book available for an honest review.

With tiny houses being all the rage these days, its great to see what they considered as a small house in the 1920's. With each page of houses the reader will also find a simple layout plan and other unique attributes to the home. I would not call many of these houses small, rather very nice homes.

I really loved this book. I suppose it has a pretty small audience which is why it would be a good library book. The Tine house movement is pretty big right now, and this would be a book someone who was thinking about it would be interested in (although none of the houses are tine and some aren't all that small). Besides a public library, this would be good for a an architectural library, or for someone like me who just likes to look at house plans.

I really found the designs interesting, I love looking at the houses. The house plans certainly gives an insight to the different periods and what seemed to be important in the era.

Very interesting book with house plans of vintage small homes of the twenties. I really enjoy looking at house plans from the past as it really shows how space was not wasted. I highly recommend this book for fun or even reference if you are planning on buying a home soon.

RATING: 4 STARS

I have always loved old houses! My dream since high school was living in a Victorian house...and I kind of still want to. The houses in the twenties and thirties have always intrigued me too. I really enjoyed looking through this book and seeing the pictures of floor plans and the interior of the homes. It is a great coffee table book!
