Description

Neil Gaiman has long been inspired by ancient mythology in creating the fantastical realms of his fiction. Now he turns his attention back to the source, presenting a bravura rendition of the great northern tales. In Norse Mythology, Gaiman stays true to the myths in envisioning the major Norse pantheon: Odin, the highest of the high, wise, daring, and cunning; Thor, Odin’s son, incredibly strong yet not the wisest of gods; and Loki—son of a giant—blood brother to Odin and a trickster and unsurpassable manipulator. Gaiman fashions these primeval stories into a novelistic arc that begins with the genesis of the legendary nine worlds and delves into the exploits of deities, dwarfs, and giants. Once, when Thor’s hammer is stolen, Thor must disguise himself as a woman—difficult with his beard and huge appetite—to steal it back. More poignant is the tale in which the blood of Kvasir—the most sagacious of gods—is turned into a mead that infuses drinkers with poetry. The work culminates in Ragnarok, the twilight of the gods and rebirth of a new time and people. Through Gaiman’s deft and witty prose emerge these gods with their fiercely competitive natures, their susceptibility to being duped and to duping others, and their tendency to let passion ignite their actions, making these long-ago myths breathe pungent life again.

Advance Praise

"From nothing, the counter-biblical original condition of Norse cosmology, to the total destruction of Ragnarok and a glimpse beyond it, Gaiman’s retelling of these ever-striking and strange stories should be every reader’s first book of Norse mythology." - Booklist, Starred Review

"Gaiman writes assuredly and evocatively and with a precise eye for the atmospheric detail.... Superb. Just the thing for the literate fantasy lover and the student of comparative religion and mythology alike." - Kirkus, Starred Review

"Who else but Neil Gaiman could become an accomplice of the gods, using the sorcery of words to make their stories new? The author of American Gods transforms Norse myths into addictive reading for young and old, with high-wattage retellings that preserve the monumental grandeur of the Nordic universe but also turn it into a world that is up close and personal, full of antic wit and dark intrigue." - Maria Tatar

Anyone who has read Gaiman's fiction knows that mythology runs heavily through it. American Gods and the Sandman series are especially evocative. His retelling of these Norse myths is just delightful Am buying for my personal collection and my library.

Another solid collection by Neil Gaiman. Entertaining and educational with more than a dollop of Gaiman's signature style and wit. I knew a small bit of Norse mythology before reading this (mainly gathered from Marvel and college courses), and now I feel I actually know the gods and other characters. Well done; I recommend.

Loved this book! Nothing is better than a fusion of Neil Gaiman and Norse mythology. This was fantastic.

This is Neil Gaiman at his best - smart, funny, and approachable! I read it all in one sitting, and it was a perfect remedy to election blues (what is better at relieving stress than reading about the apocalypse? Nothing). I can't wait to read chapters to my nephews at bedtime.

Norse Mythology was just what the title suggests: a collection of Norse myths. While the stories Neil Gaiman tells in this book are taken directly from the prose and poetic Eddas, they are much easier to read that those older versions. These are great stories for anyone interested in mythology to read, as well as anyone who wants to know more about some of the characters featured in recent Marvel movies or readers of Gaiman's American Gods. Although some of the stories are kind of confusing, that is pretty typical of myths in general, and I get the feeling that Gaiman was trying to be true to the source material. This book would be appropriate for high school on up, as there are some descriptions relating to sexual acts and violence, but nothing that is too detailed. Overall, an enjoyable read.

In his newest foray into the mythic, the mysterious, and the forgotten, beloved storyteller Neil Gaiman has chipped away the ice and snow from the Norse legends and shaped them into something new and thrilling. You'll find all the usual suspects - all-seeing Odin, mighty Thor, trickster Loki, beautiful Freya - but Gaiman has breathed fiery life into these gods of old, crafting stories that are at once exciting, poetic, hilarious, and heartbreaking. Brimming with Gaiman's signature magic and wit, Norse Mythology is a delight, and a must read for any mythology buff.

This is such a perfect intro to Norse mythology. Everything Gaiman writes is gold, but this will appeal to a whole new fan base.

Gaiman and Norse mythology has been a winning combination for over a decade. What I didn't realize about this book is that the language would be so accessible. While some content may be a little gruesome for parents, this would be an easy read for any pre-teen fan of Rick Riordan who is ready to get into the meat of the mythology. I'll be recommending this across departments

Mythology buffs, rejoice! For in Februrary Neil Gaiman shall bestow upon you this wonderful volume of Norse myths in true Gaiman style. These are stories as old as time, and while I'm not personally as familiar with the Norse myths as I should be, I found this an imminently enjoyable read. While myth can get bogged down in repetitiveness, Gaiman avoids this with astonishing dexterity. I have a new-found love for the gods of Asgard. This is fun, entertaining, and educational. I highly recommend this new work for fans of fantasy and mythology alike! 5/5 extremely enthusiastic stars!
