Description

Published in Paris in 1902, these rare plates offer a unique source of details of the era's "modern" architecture. The 58 full-color images originally appeared in a short-lived periodical from the height of the Art Nouveau period. They provide an authentic source of information on how Art Nouveau influenced architectural design in the early twentieth century.
Illustrations include windows, doorways, joists, railings, stairways, chimneys, ornamental woodwork, exterior decoration, elaborate ironwork, and much more. Additional plates depict interior and exterior views of these architectural elements in actual and planned buildings and rooms designed by architects of the period. Brief captions supply details for each plate. This treasury of rare illustrations and information represents a valuable resource for students of art history and the history of architecture as well as for architects and designers interested in Art Nouveau.

It must have been so thrilling for architects after 1895, when Art Nouveau began bending the rules. The Victorian sameness had long outlived its welcome, and Art Nouveau was the wild, joyful, anarchic style that blew it away. It was established at the Paris World Exhibition in 1900, and this collection dates to 1902. There 58 plates, in color for the most part, which demonstrate wonderfully how architects could think outside their hidebound box. There is an overrepresentation of Jugendstil, which tended, even that early, toward the Art Deco. The French, organic style, hadn’t yet taken the country by storm. So there is nothing by Hector Guimard, for example. And oddly, nothing from Belgium, where it all started, and where architects were doing thing is steel that no one had ever imagined.

It’s a small portfolio, but it really gives a sense of what was new and innovative, thanks once again to Dover rehabilitating it.

Art Nouveau Architecture is a gorgeous collection of images of Art Nouveau architecture in Paris, taken during "the height of the Art Nouveau period." The lines of each design are shown in great detail. The patterns, motifs, colors, shadows, sense of depth and use of symmetry are very inspiring for those who create, construct and design. Overall, a perfect snapshot of Art Nouveau architecture in Paris. Highly Recommended for lovers of art and architecture, and for anyone who needs a little creative inspiration.

Interesting era of art and architecture. The images were wonderful here, and for the most part an interesting book to look through. A little technical at times, so reading about some of the design principles were a little confusing to me, but other than that I enjoyed the book. I liked the details that were shown, especially on and around windows and doorways. It was a unique and beautiful era, and this book adds to my knowledge of what made it different. Would recommend this book.

'Art Nouveau Architecture' edited by R. Beauclair and M.I. Gradl was originally published in Paris in 1902. It's a wonderful look at how this beautiful style was imagined for buildings.

The book is comprised of 58 full color plates. The contributors are from France, Germany, Austria, England and The Netherlands. The book has full building facades and detail like plaster facades and bulls-eye windows. There are columns and keystones. There are interiors as well. Entry halls and restaurant buffets. Store fronts and wrought iron gates share space with handrails.

It's all gorgeous. This is imaginative and beautiful design. I have seen some of it executed, and it's just as breathtaking in real life, even 80 plus years later. It's an unusual book, but I thoroughly enjoyed poring over it.

I received a review copy of this ebook from Dover Publications and NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. Thank you for allowing me to review this ebook.

Overall: 4.5/5
Cover: 5/5
Content: 5/5 (Most are pictures. Awesome.)

This book is like a portfolio, with pictures for all small details of a house: windows, doors, staircases, etc. The illustrations are gorgeous! Seeing these imaginative and unique designs through pictures instead of long descriptions is definitely the best way to appreciate and learn more about the early 20th century architecture and interior style. Definitely a book worth reading.

As an architect I thought this book had beautiful illustrations of the Art Nouveau era. Flipping through the very detailed sketches (from the original plates of 1900's) seem to show a good ;mix between details and buildings from what was being done during the height of this period in architecture. This book would also make a great graphic supplement for any history class on the subject. I however was a little disappointing in the fact that the book didn't have very much text to explain was the reader was seeing. White the imagery is great and you clearly see the style it does not do very good explaining the thought and processes behind what you are seeing. I would have given this 5 stars if we could have had more info about what one was seeing. This would only be a great gift for someone who knows about Art Nouveau.

Art Nouveau Architecture R Beauclair, M I Gradl

These beautiful plates feature wonderful aspects of this revolutionary architecture including Grand staircases, wrought iron balconies, ornate mantels and intricate storefronts. Bright colours, floral and insect motifs and fancy apartment facades are also shown.

Anyone interested in art and the Edwardian era will enjoy this book.

I received this free book from Net Galley in return for an honest review.
