Description
It is 1934. On a French coastal island the Provincial Police arrest a senior prosecutor in the Ministry of Justice for the murder of his mistress. Chief Inspector Gambrelli, of the Metropolitan Police, is dispatched from the city to review the case and report his findings to the ministry.
Suffering the heat and humidity of the island Gambrelli begins his inquiry, asking more questions than the local authorities can answer.
Gambrelli leaves the sun bleached, sandy streets of the island and returns to the grand boulevards and cobblestone alleyways of the city. Methodically he probes the lives of the prosecutor, his wife, and his mistress. Simultaneously detectives search the city for the murdered woman’s younger sister, fearing she may become the killer’s next victim.
Following a twisting path of love, betrayal, greed and violence Gambrelli searches for the motive that led a killer to a young woman’s door.

“…wonderful, absorbing…”
“…this well-crafted police procedural is fast paced and exciting while exuding a strong—almost nostalgic—love for the sandwich years between the two world wars.”
“The novel is so well-plotted that it is actually one of these “quiet” moments that leads to a solution to the case.”
“If you’re a huge Georges Simenon fan, or merely a casual mystery reader with a hankering for a twist of European flavor in your police procedurals, you must read this little-known gem.”
“…a solid first novel in what deserves to be a best-selling series.”
