Description
In the midst of feeling lost in his prayer life and relationship with God, Fr. Looney found himself reflecting on who Mary is and how he could be more like her. He learned that by daily meditating on Mary's attributes and praying for the grace to have a heart like hers he could turn his pessimistic and critical thoughts into optimistic and charitable ones.
A Heart Like Mary's offers readers a simple yet reflective introduction to Marian spirituality by way of a month-long daily devotional. Readers come away with a clear sense of who Mary was, how she cares for and looks after the faithful, and how we can honor her in our daily lives.
Based heavily on scripture, Church teaching, and Looney’s personal experience, A Heart Like Mary's gently teaches us how to imitate Mary’s love for others and devotion to God. Each day's meditation offers simple yet reflective insight into a unique characteristic of Mary’s heart. You’ll discover twenty-one attributes and ten separate desires of her heart, including:
- A Heart That Says Yes
- A Heart That Rejoices
- A Heart Filled with Generous Love
- A Heart Attentive to the Needs of Others
- A Heart of Compassion
- A Heart Desiring to Alleviate Suffering
- A Heart Desiring Us to Pray
- A Heart Desiring Peace
Each day provides a scriptural quote or message from one of Mary's apparitions, followed by a reflection leading us into the depths of Mary’s heart and showing us how to mirror her heart. We also will be invited to call upon Mary’s intercession, asking her to give us a heart like hers. Each meditation concludes with a challenge to incorporate a love for Mary into our prayer life and action toward others.

“This book by Rev. Edward Looney is one of the best applied guides in Marian spirituality I have ever seen. It is concerned more with practice than theory, and it embodies the teaching of Jesus in the Sermon on the Mount: ‘Blessed are the pure of heart, for they will see God.’ Many graces will come to those who read this book prayerfully and faithfully. It provides a thirty-one-day journey toward purity of heart with Mary’s heart as the inspiration and guide. Fr. Looney’s book helps us realize the depth and wisdom of the message of Fatima where Mary said, ‘In the end, my Immaculate Heart will triumph.’”

Former president of the Mariological Society of America
“Fr. Edward Looney is a priest who loves Mary. He knows how much sweeter life is when you know her motherly love. A Heart Like Mary’s is a practical guide to living in her heart, which leads directly to the heart of her son. We’ll be a more tender people when we let her show us the heart of her son. Embracing her love as her sons and daughters, too, goes a long way toward our transformation into people truly living in the freedom of Christ, living the Beatitudes. Thank you, Fr. Looney, for the help!”

I really, really love this book!
I am new to the Catholic Church, having converted from Protestantism. While I have spent the majority of my life following hard after God, Mary is someone that I wasn't "allowed" to pursue as a Protestant. After joining the Catholic Church, I found myself greatly curious to learn more about who Mary was and is. This book allowed me to daily spend some time with Mary...getting to know who she is through her heart. I love how this book was approached by the author, as well as the author's way of writing. A beautiful devotional that I will continue to read and learn from on a daily basis.
With daily meditations covering each day in a month, this book looks at 31 attributes of Mary. Each meditation opens with a quote, often from the Bible. Next comes a reflection, followed by a prayer and an activity. Going through the series will encourage you to develop a better understanding of Mary and will encourage you to make a consecration to Mary.
"A Heart Like Mary's" offers a brief and meaningful daily reflection on the personality and spirituality of Our Lady as a means of encouragement and inspiration towards holiness for the reader. The reflections are deep enough to form the basis of a time of prayer, but succinct enough to be read before heading out to work for the day. "A Heart Like Mary's" would be a useful text for a women's group, Marian consecration preparation, a brief reflection before the rosary for a rosary group, and a source of inspiration for a Catholic campus ministry club.
