After all these years, Kaylea Cross’s paramilitary romantic suspense books are probably quite an institution in this small corner of the romance fiction market and it’s always exciting to step into a new series Cross begins.
‘Crimson Point’—as exotic sounding it might be—doesn’t really refer to some deliciously mysterious conspiracy theory or some covert military operation despite the very posh-sounding CIA-type name for a series, but rather, the small town where military vets come back to and find their own HEA, with a slight dose of suspense woven into their stories. It’s sort of a departure for Cross given the more contemporary romance focus but there’s enough drama to keep me occupied throughout as ‘Fractured Honor’ deals with an older hero and younger heroine, with the forbidden sister of the best friend trope coming into play here along with the introductions to the supporting characters and potential pairings that will be written into her future books.
Beckett/Sierra’s history stretches over years, though neither have been available throughout their lives (the age-gap probably contributes to this) for this to happen, along with the part where neither Beckett nor Sierra are sure of themselves and their feelings they hold back from each other. Still, Cross writes about two fairly relatable and likeable protagonists who ultimately, do decide to fight for each other without too much pushing and pulling, even if I’m not sure I particularly understand why the best friend’s sister is always a forbidden trope unless the male protagonist is an utter arse, which Beckett certainly isn’t.
All in all, it’s quite an emotional read, though the heartbreak is spread out amongst the individuals in the story that we’re introduced to, so much so that I thought Cross’s attention on the supporting characters—much more than usual—did take the pedal off Beckett/Sierra quite a bit which I hoped to have more of. The resulting slow burn did get frustrating at times, but as an establishing book, ‘Fractured Honor’ does well in weaving in the potential complications to come—there are sufficient hooks after all, to keep us coming back.
FRACTURED HONOR is the first book of the new "Crimson Point" series. This one is a little different for the author, as it takes the protagonist out of the battleground (to the aftermath, actually). It is a romantic suspense story that highlights the seen and unseen wounds of war. There are so many twists and turns in this story that it is one read late into the night page turner, at least it was for me. Just when I thought I had figured out where the danger was coming from, another event would point in a different directiondirection.
The novel is nicely written so that it felt as if you were right there as each encounter, confrontation, or situation unfolded. For a suspense book the sense of place is written like a small-town story where you can picture the area in your mind. The romance is built slowly just as SF Captain Beckett Hollister slowly builds his new civilian life. He battles with the heartache of loss both at home and on the field of war so that it is not always an easy transition.
FRACTURED HONOR a story that makes you admire those who have served this country and demands that they receive the respect that they deserve. Along the way, you hope that all find the love that SF Captain Beckett Hollister finds with the irresistible Sierra Buchanan. Looking forward to reading more in this new series.
Sierra has loved Beckett for so long, a little longer than he knew that he loved her probably. Their relationship is sweet. There is suspense in the story too that made me cringe.
A great beginning to a new series!! The best friend's little sister trope is a popular storyline these days so I wasn't sure if I was going to enjoy it or not. Well I have to say I loved this one.
Beckett Hollister, a former Special Forces captain, trying to come back to civilian life just broke my heart! It is so difficult to imagine what these soldiers have to see and do in the name of our country. We start the story with some of the hard decisions Beckett had to make which affects him to this day. And to add to that, he is informed that his father is terminally ill. He was ready to return home, but he realizes that home is where his ultimate forbidden fantasy is. Sierra Buchanan, his best friend Noah’s little sister. He has been fighting this attraction he felt toward her for awhile now, but now that he was home, he just could not stay away.
Sierra Buchanan has known Beckett for years, they were like family, so she is confused of why he was distancing himself from her. There is a bit of the unrequited love trope going on here. Sierra has had feelings for Beckett for as many years as they have known each other, she has compared him with all her relationships so they never go very far. But with the way Beckett has been acting towards her, she knows nothing would ever come of it.
But as time goes on, things change between the two. An incident involving his little neighbor acts as a catalyst to show how protective Beckett feels towards Sierra and in turn the walls around his heart starts to crumble. Then when Beckett’s father turns for the worse, Sierra is there as his anchor and he finally feels the first sense of peace in a long time. And to add even to all this, his past comes back to cause even more trouble with Sierra possibly put in harm’s way. She was now his and he would do anything to protect her.
I have to say the suspense portion of their story had really kept my attention, I was so sure I knew who the “baddie” was so it was quite a surprise when all was revealed. I did feel like there is more to come.
There were also so many touching moments in this story, not just between Beckett and Sierra, but also between Beckett and his little neighbor, Ella and the little senior pup Walter. These scenes made Beckett so much more swoon worthy. I loved the comparison between Walter and Beckett; both had aches and pains and both were described as grumpy, it was actually very cute. The chemistry between Beckett and Sierra was both sweet and sexy, once all the walls were down they could not keep their hands off each other. To be absolutely honest, it did take a bit too long to get to this point.
Overall, this was a great read, I felt so many emotions reading Beckett and Sierra’s story. I cannot wait for the next book in this series. Noah Buchanan’s story sounds awesome.
Thank you Netgalley and Kobo Writing Life for the complimentary copy of Fractured Honor. All opinions are my own.
Good start to the Crimson Point series. We meet Beck who has just returned home from the military after years of service and is trying to adjust back to life as a civilian. He's taken over his father's remodel/contracting business when his Dad became ill. He's brought in mostly Vet's, several who were on his team. Coming home also means seeing Sierra, now the town Vet and her brother is Beck's best friend. Sierra has always had a mad crush on Beck but he's never seen her as anything other than the little sister. Little sister is all grown up now and catches his eye. When things do spill over with Beck and Sierra, the steam is wallpaper peeling. One of Beck's employee's who has a TBI has begun to have behavior problems that have been worsening by the day. His wife is a good friend of Sierra's and she confides in Sierra the behavior changes that are taking place. After the final straw and Beck is more than accommodating, he's forced to let him go. There are a couple of sub plots, the young neighbor girl who likes to sit on Beck's porch, and Beck ends up adopting a rescue dog due to her influence. That's a plot twist as well and along with an unknown narrator who gave me the creeps a couple times, there are several threads in the plot line. The best way to hurt Beck someone decides is to hurt his woman and the story takes yet another twist. Didn't see that coming.
Great start to a series, we get a sneak peek at the next book involving a new gal in town and Sierra's brother who is the town sheriff.
arc from NetGalley and publisher for an honest review
Beckett was a green beret and one of his missions went bad. When he gets the news that his father is ill, he decides to leave the military and help his dad. Now he runs the construction business that renovates homes. Sierra is Beckett ‘s best friends little sister and owns a veterinarian clinic. She has always had a crush a Beck but it’s moved way past that stage. Beck holds her at arms length because he has to much baggage and doesn’t think he’d be good for her. But the past catches up with him and he must save Sierra because she’s the only light in his dark world.
A real tear jerker, have tissues nearby. Sexy. Talks about the lives of a couple of other characters that I hope we get to hear more about. I loved Beck and Sierra they were both strong and loving people. Also an old, floppy eared dog.

Former SF Captain Beckett Hollister has left the military after a final mission left him concerned about his orders that he had to follow that no longer felt justified to him. He and needed to go home to Crimson Point. He needs to think about his future, to spend time with his father, who is dying, and to keep the family construction business afloat. Beckett knows he will be seeing Sierra Buchanan, sister of his best friend. He has long had feelings for Sierra, but has never acted on those feelings. Woven into this story is enchanting Ella, a little girl who lives down the street from Beckett. Ella has rescued an elderly dog, Walter, who was abandoned. This adds such a heartwarming touch to the story as Ella somehow guilts Beckett into rescuing Walter. But there is danger ahead for Beckett as an unknown enemy, from his past, will come after him. He will deal with this enemy, but when they come after Sierra, all bets are off. Beckett knows he will do whatever is necessary to protect Sierra. I very much look forward to the second book in this series. I received a free copy of this book and voluntarily chose to give an honest review. (by paytonpuppy)
A great romantic suspense story, with a gorgeous ( both inside and out) hero and a lovely, smart heroine, “Fractured Honor” is a pleasurable read and left me wanting for more stories set in Crimson Point, Oregon.
Recently retired from the military, blue-collar hero Beckett is a great character, a mixture of gruffness and tenderness that makes him so attractive and real. His strong relationship with his father, the bonds with the Buchannans, his veteran friends, the little girl and the old dog he rescues, are all facets that add to his charisma.
I loved that Beckett (and his father) has a partially-Chinook heritage – giving him a delicious light bronze skin and deep brown eyes and hair – and I surely would have liked to have seem more depth to this dimension. Still, the way Kaylea Cross wrote Beckett’s features made it so easy to picture all that irresistible, dreamy extension of bronze skin…
The depiction of the struggles war veterans face when returning home is powerful and ruthlessly realistic (Carter is such a great character). The same applies to terminal illness and its impact.
Beckett has been serving for years but it is finally time for him to retire with his fathers failing health been the final trigger He tells his best friend Noah that he is coming home. Sierra has crushed on Becket for years and is glad that he will finally be home. Beckett is used to given orders and them been obeyed he isn't handling civilian life well at all and he is definitely avoiding Sierra When she confronts him about this he admits that he has feeling for her but will they have a chance at a HEA r will becketts past bring danger into their life. This is not only a great romance but has enough suspense and drama to keep you turning the page I am looking forward to more books in this series
This is a voluntary review of an advanced copy.
Wow, this book had me experiencing so many emotions as Beckett fights against his love for Sierra, Carter struggles with his brain injury, Molly feeling helpless, Beckett's father battling cancer, and the op that went bad. So many heart wrenching moments but throughout the pain, there is love.
I really hope that there are going to be more books in this series as we don't know if Carter ever gets the help that he needs, and Noah just met Poppy!
There was some intrigue thrown into the story and some misdirection as to the identity of the stalker but you kind of knew it wasn't who it seemed like - hope that it is not a spoiler. Did not see the drama with Ella coming but I guess the little clues were there if I had really thought about it.
Looking forward to the next book in this series as I really enjoyed this one.
Beckett has returned from the military, to his hometown on the coast of Oregon. Pretty area. His father is dying of cancer, and he has taken over his father's business as a contractor. Running into his best friend Noah, and his sister Sierra brings back memories, and with Sierra it brings chemistry and sparks. A good story, and a lot of side stories as well. With a mysterious stalker, the author throws a few red herrings up to make the reader wonder. Likeable characters, and especially liked Walter. I also like that not all characters get a HEA, or have their issues resolved. While I like HEAs as much as anyone, it is also good to have a little realistic action as well. Hope there are more books to come. Highly recommend this book and author.
FRACTURED HONOR is the first instalment in Kaylea Cross’ contemporary, adult CRIMSON POINT romantic suspense series focusing on the people of Crimson Point, Oregon. This is thirty-nine year old Captain Beckett Hollister, and thirty-one year old, veterinarian Dr. Sierra Buchanan’s story line.
Told from several third person perspectives including Beckett and Sierra, FRACTURED HONOR follows the friends to lovers/best friend’s little sister trope between thirty-nine year old Captain Beckett Hollister, and thirty-one year old, veterinarian Dr. Sierra Buchanan. When his last mission to Syria went all to h*ll, Beckett returned Stateside to discover his father only had months to live. Struggling to overcome the horrors witnessed on his last assignment Beckett Hollister throws himself headfirst into his father’s business, hiring some of his former Special Forces teammates in the wake. Returning to Crimson Point, Oregon also meant having to face the woman that has always called to his heart but a woman off-limits as Sierra Buchanan was his best friend’s little sister, and he was in no position to demand anything more. What ensues is the building love and relationship between Beckett and Sierra, and the potential fall-out as Beckett’s past comes seeking revenge for a mission that was out of his control.
Sierra Buchanan has had a crush on her brother’s best friend for as long as she can remember but Sierra has been friend-zoned for almost as long. No longer the little girl Beckett remembers Sierra isn’t willing to wait for Beckett to make the first move knowing she would probably have to wait forever. Beckett Hollister has lusted after his best friend’s sister but wasn’t willing to cross the line between friendship and love but his father’s recent decline found our hero needing the friendship and companionship of the woman that called to his heart.
The relationship between Beckett and Sierra is a friends to lovers romance wherein Beckett battles between head and heart. His neighbor’s elderly dog is the perfect excuse to get closer to the woman he loves but getting closer may also mean placing Sierra in the direct line of fire. The $ex scenes are intimate and passionate without the use of over the top, sexually graphic language and text.
We are introduced to Beckett’s fellow Special Forces solders: Sergeant Jase Weaver; Carter Boyd and his wife Molly; Beckett’s father Mr. Hollister; Sierra’s brother Sheriff Noah Buchanan, and town newcomer Poppy Larsen. Noah and Poppy’s story is next in Buried Lies.
The world building follows the romance between Sierra and Beckett, as well as the crumbling relationship between Carter and Molly. Carter suffers with the lingering after affects of head injuries suffered during the war in Syria, injuries that are now contributing to the demise of his marriage.
FRACTURED HONOR is a story of betrayal and revenge; honor and support; romance, love and happily ever after. The relationship between the tight-knit group of Special Forces soldiers struggles in the face of the knowledge that one of their own is facing a battle he is starting to lose. The premise is intriguing, engaging and realistic; the characters are damaged, spirited and colorful; the romance is seductive and spicy.

Great start to a new series! I just adored Beckett and Sierra and am such a sucker for friends to lovers stories. It was great to watch them finally admit their feelings and see their relationship grow. This was an emotional read, and I definitely felt for a lot of the characters. I liked the little bit of suspense, although it was mostly centered at the end. My only complaint was that it felt like there was too much focus on the supporting characters. I understand the intent is to set up their stories, but I think it could have been done without random sections from their POVs. Overall, that is a minor complaint compared to my enjoyment of the story. Can't wait for more!

What a great start to a new series by Kaylea Cross! This book is filled with warmth, romance, suspense, and heartbreak. Beckett and Sierra are great couple and their story includes a cast of characters your going to want to meet again. (I am especially hoping Carter gets his own story). I'm looking forward to the next book so I can catch up with the hunky sheriff!
Kaylea Cross has packed an abundance of fun, intense and intriguing elements into this one story. Beck is a complicated man; and with so much happening in his life, you wonder how he copes. His dad is ailing; he is trying to find his way in civilian life, he has basically been adopted by his neighbour’s daughter (she’d rather spend time with Beck, than anywhere else), an old dog needs a new home, his fellow team member is struggling with a traumatic injury and someone wants him dead. So where amongst all this drama, will Beck find time for love?
Well I guess you’ll just have to read this fabulous story for yourself and see how it all pans out. You won’t be disappointed, so settle in and put your feet up while you navigate the trails and tribulations of this troubled, but never defeated, sweet and loveable man. I can’t wait to see what Ms Cross delivers next!
Wow! This book was amazing. Usually the first book in a new series is a little slow for me because of the world building by the author. This did not hold true for this amazing book.
There was so much happening. Beckett got out of the military after 20 years, when a botched mission didn’t sit well with him. He’d lost so much; friends, time, his marriage. And now his father had terminal cancer. Beck came home to help take over his fathers construction business and ease his fathers last months in this world.
One thing he didn’t want was to give into the feelings he has for his best friend’s little sister, Sierra. Feelings that had gotten stronger since his divorce.
Sierra and Beckett try to navigate these feelings while dealing with Beckett’s father’s failing health, a pedophile, a spurned fiancé and a dear friend suffering from severe PTSD. See? So. Much. Going. On.
Ms. Cross set up so many other storylines for the next books in the series and I cannot wait to read them.
I've long been a fan of Kaylea Cross, and am happy to delve into a new series. Beckett and Sierra were plausible, relatable characters. It was nice to see the other side of the coin, in regards to military life, and witness his transition to 'civilian' life. I look forward to continuing with the series.
3.75 stars
A great start to a new series!
Sure, I kind of miss the suspense that usually comes with Kaylea's books; there's just not as many men in uniforms in this one, but I still loved it a lot. Fractured Honor felt to me how Pamela Clare's Barely Breathing felt after reading her I-Team series--a nice change.
Anyway I'm a big fan of the BFF's sibling trope. Sierra is Beckett's best friend Noah's little sister, though not so little now--Sierra is 31 while Beckett is 39 (yay older characters!). They're so good together, and their chemistry is *fans self* HOT.
Super excited to be continuing this series. Noah's book next! And oh my god the Jase-Molly-Carter saga.
I love romantic suspense stories and this one is really good.I also love military based stories so this was a double win!I loved Becketts charactor,he was so well written he was very true to life.He has returned home to take care of family business,he has pstd and his dad is sick.He also has to deal with his feelings for Sierra, the town vet and his friends sister. The book is an emotional journey for them both and suspenseful with the kidnapping of Sierra.Great characters had me engrossed from start to finish.Looking foward to Ms.Cross next book.I read this book as an arc and this is my honest opinion.
Beckett and Sierra’s relationship was well paced and their back story was well developed. I appreciated that their relationship was not overly graphic. The plot was well-developed and the characters were wonderfully written. Seeds have been planted for future books and I look forward to the rest in this series. This book had me crying and laughing. It was a fast read and will be well received in my library.
I love Kaylea Cross's fast paced, sexy novels. You can always count on awesome characters, suspense, and a happily ever after. THis is my first book in this series, and I will read the rest. I can't wait for the next one in November!
Truely an outstanding story . I volunteered to read and review a readers copy through Netgallery of Fractured Honor . This is a fantastic story I really enjoyed reading it .
It's full of suspense and intrigue, heartbreak , dispair ,dark times . It also has love and great friendships and family . This story takes you on quite a journey . Beckett is a troubled special forces military man . Sierra is a veterinarian with a beautiful soul and has loved Beckett most of her life . If you throw in alittle girl , an old dog and great friends and a great storyline you get a fantastic story . It's a well written statement , outstanding characters .
It's an emotional heart wrenching at times mixed with humour and love it's a winner . I highly recommend taking the time to read I'll definitely be reading more from this author .
I was surprised how much I enjoyed Fractured Honor the first in the new series by Kaylea Cross. The characters fit into the story and they were able to feel real as they struggled with life and death.
The story is more romance than mystery but what mystery is there has power keeping readers wanting more form this new series.
The author didn't fall on the cross of Romance stories where two people find each other and for some lame reason push each other away instead they work together creating characters and locations that felt real.
Thank you to the author Kaylea Cross and Netgalley for a copy of Kaylea Cross Fractured Honor.
I can't wait for the next in the series.
Kaylea Cross is a go-to author for me for military-based/inspired romantic suspense. I'm not in any way connected to the military directly, but I've always felt that Cross does a fantastic job of broaching and dealing with topics that are likely very much ones that are dealt with in real life for our military, veterans and their families. Things like PTSD and family dynamics. Her work feels gritty and realistic and not over-the-top like some of the military romances I've read.
Fractured Honor is the first book in her new Crimson Point series and I have to say it's a great start. I will say that I found it a bit predictable in terms of the "whodunit" part, but still very much worth reading. Perhaps my only criticism (and I hesitate to even call it that) is that even though Beckett and Sierra have known each other forever, they hadn't really been around each other all that much in recent years. That kind of made the progression of their relationship feel a bit "instalove-ish" to me. That being said, it didn't necessarily come across as unrealistic, just a tad rushed.
There was a good cast of supporting characters and some nice setup for future books in the series. I look forward to reading them when they come out.
*I voluntarily read and reviewed an advance copy of this book. All thoughts and opinions are my own.*
Beckett Hollister has had enough of military life and makes up his mind that he's getting out. At the same time, he gets a call from his Dad and learns that his Dad has cancer. Once he gets home, he's busy taking care of his Dad's business and trying to spend as much time with his Dad as he can. He's also fighting nightmares from his time in the military and some of the things he had to do.
Sierra Buchanan has had a crush on Beckett for years. She wonders if he still sees her as Noah's little sister. As she watches him befriend a little girl, adopt an elderly dog, care for his Dad, that crush grows a little more.
Then Sierra is put in danger by someone from Beckett's past. Beckett decides he will do everything possible to save Sierra and never let her go.
