this was such an awesome book! Enneagramandcoffee has been one of my favorite instagram accounts for a while now, and it was cool to hear from her in a longer form format. I appreciated that this book didn't sugarcoat anything. It was honest about shortcomings, but matched that with lists of strengths. Aesthetically, I also thought the book did really well. I liked the hands holding items at the beginning of each chapter and the colors for every number. This definitely illuminated a lot in terms of my relationships with my family. I do wish it would have gone into how the types interacted with each other a bit more, though. Thanks for letting me read this for free.
This is a wonderful, informative and easy to read book. I've read other books on the enneagram and some have been really in depth. This book keeps it easy to read and actually enjoyable to understand your type.
Would absolutely recommend this book to anyone new to or just finding about the enneagram types. A fabulous idea as a gift as it applies to everyone in some way. Definitely deserves the 5 stars.
Will definitely be buying copies of this for friends when it is on sale.
Thank you Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley.
From the creator of the popular Instagram account @enneagramandcoffee, The Honest Enneagram is a great resource for those new to the enneagram, or for the mild enthusiast looking for a taste of what it’s all about.
Each chapter covers one of the nine enneagram types and provides a well-rounded look of the type as a whole – basic motivations, fears, blind spots, etc. – without bogging the reader down with too much heavy detail. Quick, well-designed and peppered with a few fun posts from its Instagram of origin, I’d recommend it for beginners!
i’ve always really appreciated this authors take on the enneagram & have been following along with her since she really because popular! so, this book was a treat. it wasn’t like other enneagam books in the slightest. it was honest & real & sometimes a punch in the gut - but wow, what a necessary punch in the gut. if you love the enneagram like i do, read this book. you’re going to learn so much along the way of who you are meant to me & those around you as well
Going into this I didn't know a lot about the enneagram, other than the fact that it related personality types to numbers. This books conversational tone made it really easy to jump in and learn. As a person who loves personality tests and types, this was fascinating. As many people will, I read one chapter in detail and largely skimmed the rest.
That was a scary read. I don't know if I should say run for the hills or read this book immediately. There's some very insightful and interesting facts and analysis of Enneagram and of each type. I love that the author shows us the types' dark sides but is very positive about it, because the objective isn't to point fingers but help people deal with their negative behaviours in a healthier way.
I was able to get a ton of useful information out of the book and I will definitely buy a physical copy when the book is released.
This introduction to the enneagram is probably the most helpful version I've read- it has kind and gentle truths, as well as meaningful advice for how to grow into the healthiest version of yourself. I loved the reminders of small ways we can modify our life to be both easier and more satisfying, and I appreciated the type-specific suggestions of creative outlets. I'll be giving this as a gift, for sure!
This is the perfect introduction to enneagram! It's not only insightful and interesting, and not mention beautiful, but very helpful. Fundamental for anyone who wants to be a better version of themselves. Highly recommend.
This was such a fun read and for anyone who is new to Enneagrams and is as cliche as me, maybe taking the test online first could help make it easier to read and enjoy this book.
Thanks Netgalley for the eARC.
This book was super interesting. I had heard a lot of people mention Enneagram, but I didn't know much about it. The author assumes you already know what your Enneagram number is, and I would have liked if the book had some resources on how to find out if you didn't already know. That being said, after some googling and a test, I went back and found the results were really on point. I liked how the author approached it - not making you feel guilty or shaming, but with the attitude that everyone is just here trying to be the best version of themselves. Really interesting.
I became interested in Enneagrams after listening to a podcast in which they talked about Enneagrams and which type they were. This book was like an expansion on that and I loved learning and becoming more informed about each type and which type I am. Thanks netgalley and Andrew Mcmeel publishing for this fun ARC!
Five stars! Case (popular from her podcast 'Enneagram and Coffee'), has made the Enneagram approachable, friendlier and more digestable in this beautiful book. While other Enneagram books sometimes focus too deep on certain aspects or tie the Enneagram to religion (which in my opinion limits the reach in a school library like mine), Case's approach is like sitting down with a friendly therapist that somehow knows all about you and is a cheerleader to help you be your very best. I appreciate that she includes "trigger warnings" for difficult subjects, and explains a type's shortcomings in a way that encourages us to do better and try things differently than we may have before in order to help us grow.
This will be a must have for any library. I can't wait to show this one to my Enneagram-obsessed teens.
Delightful book about the enneagram and how each type can work towards being its healthiest version of self. I especially enjoyed the enneagram bingo sections and the author's H.O.N.E.S.T breakdown for each type.
I find Enneagrams so interesting and insightful. The Honest Enneagram is beautifully presented and worded. It’s modern and fresh and compiles so much valuable information on each number. This is a great reference book and highly recommended to discover more about yourself and your strengths and challenges.
Sarajane did a phenomenal job with this book! It’s so refreshing to read about the enneagram and the different types, especially my own, through her lens. She writes in such a way that you feel like you’re with a trusted friend. Anything she says is coated with respect and love. It’s a great book!
This book is so awesome. Sara Jane is amazing at laying out each level and how you can or cannot relate and how they all break down. This topic can be so overwhelming in the beginning and I was extremely put off. However the author is able to really reach out to the reader. I have started listening to Sara Janes podcast eniagram and coffee and also have started really getting into this topic. It is so interesting! Highly recommend this book. I received an advance review copy for free, and I am leaving this review voluntarily.
I received an advanced digital copy from NetGalley, but due to some issues with the file I was only able to view it on my phone. I read the first quarter, but am stopping now because reading on my phone gives me a headache. The book seems like a good introduction to the enneagram and I look forward to finishing it once it is published on April 14, 2020.
I've followed author Sarajane Case's Instagram account Enneagram and Coffee since close to its inception. As such I'm familiar with her ideology surrounding the Enneagram. I really appreciate her approach, which feels more welcoming than most.
I believe personal development should be both about acceptance and growth. We have to learn to accept ourselves and our flaws, while also trying to grow into a better version. Not every self-help book has this approach. Many in fact will try to guilt you into changing by focusing on your faults.
But every personality has its pros and cons. Focusing on just one or the other doesn't truly serve us in the end. Sarajane makes it clear that each type brings so much to their relationships with others. She emphasizes self-care, and being gentle with ourselves as we grow. The goal is not to change our type or core motivations. The goal is to increase our awareness of our strong points and flaws, and to work each day to be better than the day before.
I will say I found some of the writing to be repetitive. In that, the explanation for each section was the same for each type. While I understand it is difficult to find 9 different ways to say the same thing, it got a bit tiresome after the 4th or 5th chapter.
She finds a nice mix of reminding us to be gentle with ourselves, while also not sugarcoating the negative tendencies of each type. I really like how each chapter had sections on self-care, recognizing stagnation, finding motivation, and levels of health. These specific topics are what got me into the Enneagram in the first place, and her insight was incredibly helpful!
Overall I would give it 4/5 stars because of the repetitive nature. But overall found it to be a great introduction to the Enneagram! Thank you to the publisher for this advance reader copy in exchange for my honest review..
If you're a fan of the author's Instagram account @enneagramandcoffee, then you will probably enjoy this book. This is very much an aesthetic visual look at each type as you'd find in her posts on Instagram. There's some additional writing on each enneagram type following her HONEST framework (Honor your strengths; open your eyes to blind spots; note your support plan; explore your relationships; soften your path; turn that into something beautiful). I wouldn't hand this book to someone unfamiliar with the enneagram, and I don't think it would help much in figuring out your own number. I'd pick this up or recommend it to people who like the Instagram style of the author and those who know their numbers and perhaps the numbers of their closest family and friends and will have fun picking out the bits that match themselves and loved ones.
This book is excellent for both those who already know their Enneagram types and those seeking to find find their type. I know my type, so I, being insatiably curious about myself (type 5 checking in), started with the chapter on 5, then on 6, my wing. If you're not sure what type you are, start with just the BINGO pages at the start of each chapter. See which resonates most with you, then read that chapter and see how it fits.
This is not the enneagram book to pick up if you know nothing about the enneagram, but it is the one to read if you want to be challenged. I have been following Sarajane and her Instagram @enneagramandcoffee for a while now loving both her fun and serious enneagram posts and was very excited for this book.
This is not a book for beginners. I suggest knowing your enneagram and having a good grasp on what that means before reading this book as there isn't a test or real intro in this like some books.
As with most enneagram books you will mainly focus on your number and the numbers of those closest around you but the way this book goes into detail is amazing. The H.O.N.E.S.T. method she has come up with is very interesting and really hits deep.
I have been into the enneagram for over a year now and read a lot of books but this one made me think in some very new ways I haven't before and also made me dig deep into my soul.
I loved that this book has a positive outlook on all the enneagram types. "Honest" is an acronym of steps to use to examine your type and learn more about yourself. Great info presented in an easy to understand and fun way. I wish the book had a way to determine what type you are, but it is written more for people who are already familiar with their type. The first part of the book goes over background info, and then sections focus on each of the types. Because it is mentioned that people draw from or revert to other types in certain situations, I would have enjoyed some references to go read other areas in particular of the other numbers.
I received an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I am completely new to the Enneagram, and after taking the test two weeks ago, I can't stop reading books about it. What a fun surprise to run across this book as I as searching the shelves for a new take on the Enneagram! Sarajane Case's take on my type, and the way she approaches the entire book, is done with grace, honesty and soft nudges to find the best in ourselves. It was a clear and concise way of learning more, and a fantastic intro to the subject for newbies like me. Definitely recommend for curious people who are looking to learn more about their type.
This book is a great addition for fans of the enneagram. I have followed the author on Instagram for a while and always appreciate her witty and unique approach to the topic. I liked this book for its focus on growth and self compassion. This book is best for people who already know their enneagram type. Overall a really great resource!
Enneagram is a lasting personality test, and this book offers lots of detail. It’s a worthwhile addition to my library collection based on patron interest:
Intriguing and engaging. A great way to learn about something that promises great insight into the self and other people. This is the book to look for if you want to gain that insight.
I was interested to learn more about Enneagrams, so this book was such a delight! This a great comprehensive introduction written in an authentic and comfortable way. I will be reading this again! :)
I really enjoyed this guide. I have always been intrigued by personality tests, and the enneagram is one of the most renowned due to its various studies and research that has gone into understanding each personality type. Sarajane Case does a great job at introducing the average person to the different methods of understanding one's results to this test.
This book can be read cover to cover or you can jump around to read about whichever types interest you the most. With handy headings and subheadings, you are able to choose how you wish to read this helpful guide to one of the world's most popular personality tests.
My very first exposure to the enneagram was through the Instagram account @enneagramandcoffee, which is run by Sarajane Case. All of my friends were sharing their types' bingo squares, and I had to see more. A long time and a lot of research later, and I am a huge fan of the enneagram.
This book is written as an introduction to the nine enneagram types and the different subtypes. A lot of other enneagram resources tend to be super technical, and often quite critical. This has resulted in what some claim to be the easiest way to type yourself - read through each type and whichever description hurts your feelings the most is probably your number. Sarajane, though, put a beautiful spin on each type, highlighting weaknesses alongside strengths. In her introduction, she says that she wants the book to feel like a conversation with a friend, which was definitely conveyed in her writing style.
Each chapter starts with a quote about the type, the bingo sheet for that type, and then a graphic about how each type would handle a certain situation. Most of these I had already seen since I follow her on Instagram, but I enjoyed the visual content interspersed between the text of the chapters. She then gives a description of the type and subtypes for each number, and the applies her HONEST method for how to grow. It was a good balance of identifying the areas for growth while reminding readers of their strengths.
My only complaint about this book was that each chapter is really written to that type. For example, I am a five. I read the descriptions of each type, but most of the chapters didn't apply to me because I didn't need to know how to grow as a two, because I am not a two. I would have loved it if she had included insights on how to interact with each type as a way of making every chapter more valuable to readers.
Overall, this book is a great introduction into the enneagram!
I really enjoyed this book and the cute illustrations that came with it. I originally followed the author's Instagram and was excited to read further into this subject. It did not disappoint! However, another reviewer mentioned that they wished the book delved a little deeper into interpersonal relationships with the different enneagram types, and I am inclined to agree. That said, I enjoyed reading about how best to grow into my type and found it very informative.
Thanks again to NetGalley and the publisher for this ARC in exchange for my honest review.
I was pleasantly surprised by this Enneagram resource. It really distinguishes itself as different because of the author's H.O.N.E.S.T. system for growth.
The tone of this is conversational, which I love in a nonfiction book. She covers some introductory material - her experience, her philosophy, her emphases (subtypes, lines, wings, levels of health). Then she addresses each type, following a pattern, where she works through basic information, subtypes, wings, and levels of health. Then she applies her H.O.N.E.S.T. system to each type. I loved this part. Readers don't have to guess how to apply it themselves to their individual type - she shows you how it might look for you. I liked how practical the information was.
This is a beginner's resource, but if you are specifically digging into the Enneagram to use it for personal growth, this adds a nice extra feature with this H.O.N.E.S.T. piece. I will definitely be adding this resource to my Enneagram library for this reason.
Insightful text to gain a better perspective of oneself. This book would be a good addition for employers to read in order to promote self-awareness and a deep reflection for employees. Thank you to the publisher for a copy of this book in exchange for my honest opinion.
Thank you to Netgalley and the Publisher for my digital copy in exchange for an honest review. I requested this book because awhile back I suddenly developed an interest in learning my type when I saw a post about Enneagrams on Instagram. Soon after, I read my first book on the subject and learned my type. I can't say I disagreed with what it had to say about me. This book seemed to agree with what the other had to say as well. I guess I really don't change much. :) This book would be a great introduction to the nine types of Enneagrams as it is not super technical and in her introduction, Sarajane says that she wants the book to feel like a conversation with a friend, which was exactly how it felt. Like any other Enneagram book, there are chapters for each type, which can be a good thing or a bad thing. Ultimately, it means that a large part of the book is just not for you...but I actually like to know the various types and try to figure our who in my life belongs to which Enneagram. :)All in all, a good book. :)
I've read a lot of books about the enneagram. What resonates with me most about this one is that the author keeps a down-to-earth, personal and personable writing style, and peppers it with a lot of grace and understanding. Her approach makes it easy to sit with the information a while and let it hang around, to see if it rings true, rather than wanting to run from the possible realizations.. It's easy to understand, and is written in such a way that helps the reader stay open. I like that.
I recommend this book to understanding the enneagram, where one fits within the scope of everything, and practical understanding of how it applies to life. My thanks to the author, publisher, and NetGalley for an advanced readers copy in exchange for an honest review.
Interesting book on the enneagram. I love how easy it was to understand. Anyone could pick this up and have a foundational understanding. It’s best for beginners, but also good for people with more in-depth knowledge. Filled in some gaps for me which was great.
I received a digital copy of this book from netgalley. I was in no way required to write a positive review. All thoughts are my own.
I was following Sarajane Case on IG when she was writing this book and was so excited to read the finished product. I’m interested in all things Enneagram, and appreciate the respect and perspective that Sarajane provides. A fantastic tool for self-exploration and understanding.
