Description
He’s running from his past; she’s running from her future. But on a snowy winter night, they find each other and the surprising gift of love.
Sir Nicholas has given up on marriage. These days he’s content to captain his friend’s troops and avoid entanglements—until one winter night when he rescues a half-frozen woman from a snowstorm. Her irrepressible spirit and kindness to others reminds him that all ladies aren’t like his former intended, who wed his brother while Nick was on crusade. But he can’t open his heart to Lady Clare. She’s bound to another, and Nick won’t forfeit his honor. Even if she were free, he has nothing to offer but love, and this lady deserves everything.
Lady Clare’s dying grandfather has arranged her betrothal, but the arrival of the man she’s to wed sends her fleeing into a snowstorm. Injured when her horse stumbles, she’s rescued by a mysterious knight. She recovers at his run-down manor, safe at last—until her betrothed tracks her down just days before Christmas. Trapped at home with the wedding imminent, she longs for the winter knight she’s come to love.
Only a miracle can bring Clare and Nick together. But at Christmas, anything is possible.

A medieval tale filled with knights, damsels in distress, snowy escapes, challenges of honour, and deathbed vows.
Sir Nicholas has been tasked by his friend and liege to assess his newest land acquisition. Soon after arriving, a lobe horse arrives at the gates with a bag filled with a lady's garments. Sir Nicholas soon finds himself not only with an armful of a near-frozen woman but also entertaining feelings and questions he has not had since before the holy war.
Lady Clare has risked all to escape the men who have overtaken her family home and informed her of her betrothal to one of them. She awakens to find herself in a strange place and being cared for by a dark knight and his followers.
I have dipped my toes in the proverbial historical romance pool but I had yet to try a medieval knight story. I was not disappointed. The story was intriguing and brought along elements of a safe and sweet burgeoning romance. I did feel like the love part was fairly quick but, I can't say that I wouldn't have made a swift a decisive decision if facing the same fate as Lady Clare. There were elements of risk as Sir Rollo was a right crude bastard but nothing horrible befalls our heroine. Further, the "romance" is a romance-lite and does not contain anything more scandalous than kissing.
I wholeheartedly enjoyed A Winter Knight and look forward to more in the Knights of Destiny series.
This is my first Barbara Bettis book and a really good read! Hero and heroine’s, Nicholas and Clare’s, characters were well developed for a novella. Ms. Bettis shared enough of their ‘backgrounds’ and character to let us see their hearts and lives to enjoy their romance. Each of them had ‘battles’ to fight to reach their HEA. Nicholas actually did have a sword fight for Clare at one point.
Nicholas and Clare find time to spend together in spite of their concerns. They develop an immediate and not understandable-to-them connection on which to build their love.
I thought A Winter Knight was going to be a ‘clean’ romance, but Bettis dropped in a little surprise. It did not appear to add to the story, but neither did it take away. Seems a writer needs to go all in or leave the sensual out. In this case, it was really brief and not needed. Bettis appears to be an excellent romance writer without sex added. I plan to look for more of Bettis’ work.
This was such a warming story. The hero has just arrived at a manor that his friend has inherited and has been told that everyone left when the old baron died. So the hero is sent to scout it out, help the tenants that couldn't leave and provide for them the heroine's horse arrives at the gate of the keep riderless and the hero goes and finds her well away from the manor under a light layer of snow. He rescues her and takes her back to the keep. She is ill and he finds help for her. She was running away from an unwanted betrothal. This story made me feel very warm inside.
The story was very well written, with a few spelling and grammatical errors. The story read smoothly and quickly; it did not drag on. The characters were all multi dimensional and likeable. There were no dangling story lines. Everything wrapped up nicely, and believably. I would highly recommend this story to anyone who enjoys HEA stories. 5 stars
When a noble knight rescues a lady on an extremely cold night, it wasn't his intention to fall in love. She's promised to another who sees only the value of her home, not her. When she's forced to return to her home to marry, the noble knight follows. If only she could marry the noble knight she loves. With a few twists and turns Bettis writes an enchanting love story built on love and faith.
The story revolves around a young woman trying to escape an arranged marriage and the knight who falls in love with her. Nick rescues Clare from a snow storm and saves her life but can’t save her from the impending marriage. There is a lot of drama happening and it adds to the story, making it a great read. There is a HEA for Nick and Clare but a lot happens first. This is a great love story and I would recommend it.
Sweet story of a stranded lady Clare, escaping from an unwanted betrothal to an unfeeling man, Lord Rollo, by riding to the manor of Lord Roarke and Lady Alyss. Her horse gets spooked in a snowstorm and she is unseated, and her horse makes its was to Channings manor, where Sir Nicholas, is camping out, seeing what would be needed to restore the manor.
Nick has been betrayed by his betrothed, who preferred to marry his brother for his wealth. Betrayed , Nick has walked away from his birthright, and resolved to be alone.
When he rides out and discovers Clare, he is both attracted to her and wary of her suspected feminine wiles. He soon realises she is an honourable woman, and they fall in love, but how can Clare break the betrothal agreement her grandfather signed, and how can Nick rescue her from the cruel Rollo and keep his honour, when he has nothing to offer her.
This was a pleasant read, but didn’t really enthral me, the pacing was slow, and the plot a bit too reliant on last minute twists.
I voluntarily reviewed an advance reader copy of this book and all opinions are my own.
This was an enjoyable book to read. It kept me interested as the characters were strong, kind and loving. There was a good storyline and kept me wanting to know what happens to the characters. Ido recommend that you read this book.

Sometimes I just want to get lost in a short story and fall in love with the romance. Just to escape for a few hours.
This was just that for me, a lovely historical romance to put a big smile on my face. I loved all the characters and the romance was good. If you want a HEA, then you’ll like this one.
This was a Netgalley from the Publisher and I’ve given my honest review.
I loved this book. When Sir Nicolas rescues Lady Clare, he is not expecting how she touches his life for the better and how she touches the lives by all the people he knows. Her white light surround her and her kind heart make it easy to love her, Yet it is her duty to marry another and she is betrothed to a man she doesn’t want! Yet how can she escape when the paperwork is done. It it null and void where she has. To marry this unwanted marriage with no way out? Lady Clare still fantasizes of a better life with Sir Nicolas the man of her hopes and dreams! Will these star crossed lover get their happily ever after? The multi demential characters are absolutely phenomenal is this beautiful story!
A very sweet and cute story for two lovers. The story seems to be on the soft and timid side of romance. The characters all appear to be strong characters in their own right. The description and details of the scenes are explained with just enough detail, not to overwhelm the reader. I wish that there was a little bit action within the story as the book scene was set back in medieval times.
I voluntary reviewed this ARC a free gifted copy.
