Description
Whether you're visiting the penguins of Antarctica, joining the Carnival in Brazil or taking a canoe safari down the Zambezi River, this book will take young travellers on whole host of fascinating adventures across the continents.
Each section begins with an infographic map of the region it explores, followed by richly detailed two-page spreads featuring its most fascinating locations. You’ll get to go to sleep under the Northern Lights, meet millions of monarch butterflies in the boreal forests of Mexico’s volcanic mountains, shower with an elephant in Chiang Mai and go snorkelling in the Great Barrier Reef, among many other amazing adventures.
This book celebrates the great diversity of our planet: with every turn of the page, you'll come across different animals, people and sights unique to each of the locations. Look out for two adventurers in every scene as you travel through the book. Discover with them hundreds of things to spot and learn about.
Interesting facts and figures pepper the scenes. Did you know that London’s Big Ben clock bell weighs as much as a small elephant? Or that more than one-third of the world’s commercial supply of pineapples comes from Hawaii? A 'Can you find?' page at the back challenges you to explore the pages even deeper by locating the pictured people, animals and things.
This smaller Travel Edition fits easily into suitcases, backpacks and car-seats, making it the perfect guide for budding adventurers.

The original Atlas of Adventures, but in resource-saving smaller size. If you don't know these books, a (generally slightly cartoonish) spread is peppered with factoids, so you can sort of build up some useful knowledge about Lapland, London or Louisiana paddle-wheelers. It's fun and engaging, even if it isn't strictly speaking a geography lesson – but it will show you that all the world is full of the interesting titbit of trivia, if nothing else.
Atlas of Adventures: Travel Edition by Lucy Letherland is a beautifully illustrated book filled with intriguing facts about locations around the globe. A perfect book to peak children’s interest in travel adventures. The book divides the globe into regions with specific locations given detailed two pages spreads highlighting adventures, traditions, festivals and interesting facts. It is a book children will want to pick up again and again, either to play the fun “search and find” activities or simply learn more cool facts about one of the highlighted locations. Overall a fun book for elementary and early middle school aged children.
I'd be remiss in this review to not first mention the end pages of this book. Both front and back covers have every inch filled with gorgeous illustrations of monarch butterflies and emperor penguins respectively. Stunning!
Broken up by regions of the world, this book "celebrates the great diversity of our planet". It's definitely a brief overview of the amazing locations and festivals in the world, but it highlights some fantastic locations and even great organisations such as Chiang Mai's Thai Elephant Conservation Centre. I really enjoyed the facts on each page, adding information on various subjects to local sights, language, festivals, flora, fauna and more.
A fun little extra when you get to the end of the book, is a "search and find" challenge for drawings on each spread
A really enjoyable book and a great way to get a look at the fantastic world we have to explore.
This is a really cute atlas for children with great illustrations and lots of fun facts about the different countries.
This is a fantastic addition to a world geography and cultural study unit, especially for your-mid elementary school age students. As a homeschooler, this could easily be one of the foundational books I could use in our "around the world" studies.
The way the book is organized makes it easy to find the adventures and see how close/far different events are from one another. There is also a nice collection from each region, so lots of different cultures and areas can be studied. There is enough information on each page to get the general idea of each place/event, but still leave it open for further study as students are interested. I also like how the pages are set up with bright pictures, and little notes so there isn't just a big wall of sometimes intimidating to students) texts.
This is a book I will definitely be picking up for our homeschool, recommending to our local homeschool group, and library. A lot of secular homeschool curricula focus their kindergarten year on around the world, so I will be sharing this with those creators and homeschool groups as well.
Really interesting information about a diverse selection of travel destinations around the world. There were facts about the animals, the environment, and the different cultures you'll encounter if you travel to these destinations. The artwork was amazing (DK Publishing utilizes the best illustrators, IMO) and I think kids (and some adults) will be captivated by this book.
Thanks to DK Publishing and Netgalley for the ARC!
I completely enjoyed this book. I would have been enchanted by it as a young reader and a thirst for travel would have immediately been born. It goes without saying that the illustrations are super successful of drawing the reading in. I found all the little footnotes and bits of information charming. They also help to create a volume that can provide something new to see of discover with each read. I think the pages for the Great Barrier Reef were my favorite and I liked the inclusion of the Holi festival, proving that adventure is not always just limited to famous places or landmarks. As a librarian, I would certainly purchase this book and place it in my middle school non-fiction section. As a parent, I would have loved to share this book with my child. I so appreciate having a chance to explore this book prior to publication.
Brilliant book, beautifully illustrated and informative without being overwhelming for children. Perfect for both the classroom and library, I shall be ordering several copies.
‘Atlas of Adventures: Travel Edition’ is a wonderfully colourful journey around the globe, allowing the reader to discover the many adventures they might have without leaving their living room.
The book is split into continents and then within each section there are sub-sections exploring in more detail the animals, people and landmarks specific to each region. Each main section begins with a colourful, illustrated map of the continent showing what can be discovered there from the Northern Lights in Finland to doing the haka in New Zealand. Each sub-section that follows shows a map of the country it refers to and then the amazing things that can be discovered there. The illustrations are interspersed with facts about the country or city being referred to.
With something new to discover every time you look at it, this is sure to keep young readers entertained for hours. The ‘Can you find?’ page at the back of the book challenges readers to locate specific people, animals and objects throughout the book. Sure to inspire a longing for travelling around the world and embarking on exciting adventures, this book is suitable for children aged 7 and up. The smaller size makes it perfect for taking along on your adventures.
Calling young adventurers! Choose where you want to go...it could be Europe; North or Central and/or South America; Asia and the Pacific East; Africa; Australia and Oceania or Antarctica. The whole world is there for you.
Each colorful spread is filled with illustrations and facts. Readers can also look for the two adventure guides in each new location. Visit the London Eye, the Louvre or the Moscow Metro in Europe. In North America spend time in Alaska, New York's Central Park or take a Steamboat ride. And so it goes, with each region having so many things to explore.
This is such a colorful and appealing title. It provides a fun introduction to the many wonders of our world for the young armchair traveler.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for this title in exchange for an honest review. This book is a keeper!
Definitely picking up a copy of this book for my goddaughter! The Atlas of Adventures is a series of oversize hardcover children's books, crammed cover to cover with beautiful illustrations and geography-oriented fun facts and figures, designed to turn any kid into a curious world explorer. I wish I had these books growing up! This volume is probably my favorite because it is travel-themed. I may get more than one copy :)
The study of the world around us has taken on bold new ways to understand geography. We used to use a plain old giant atlas that showed boundaries, mountainous regions as well as bodies of water. Now we have the privilege of learning about the world through adventures.
This travel edition will ensure you find something fascinating to do, visit or experience from all over the world. Many of these places will be familiar while others may be new. Come and explore and plan your next adventure.
All continents have at least one adventure for you to plan and as you browse each page, you will see plenty of other sights to intrigue you.
Incredible, vibrant and detailed illustrations fill the pages and increase your wanderlust for travelling.
This is a WONDER of a book. Endlessly fascinating, utterly beautiful, and a real celebration of the incredible world we live in. This will be a go-to gift for curious children (and their grown-ups). One to dive into, dip into, and to enjoy over and over again.
A pocket size visually appealing children’s atlas. A good selection of destinations from all over the world. Each place highlighted has bite size pieces of information that gives children just enough. A fun travel book that thanks to its size children can take with them if visiting these places in person. A great addition to a children's reference library.
Thank you for netgalley & Wide Eyed Editions for this eARC. All opinions are my own.
My girls loved the format of this book. Instead of dividing the book up like I thought, we read it in big chunks. Great book to read straight through or come back to specific parts!
Atlas Of Adventure is a wonderful Non-Fiction book for children. It contains detailed, colourful illustrations and maps of the worlds continents. There is information on geography, animals, different cultures etc. At the end there is a 'spot the objects' challenge too. This book is fun and informative. Thanks to NetGalley and the publisher for my digital copy.
Did you know that red foxes have whiskers on their feet? Or that people were skiing back in 4000 BC?
This beautiful little book is packed with lots of interesting facts and lovingly drawn illustrations of the four corners of the earth.
It’s a way to still explore the world and ‘travel’ now that many people can’t leave their home and a sure way to keep kids entertained.
I particularly loved the spreads about the Amazon, the Antarctic, and the Zambezi river. I also loved that there was a “can you find” section at the back of the book showing a particular animal, human(s) or building to search for on every page.
We really enjoy these little snippets of around the world non-fiction, but we liked the animal and ocean adventures ones slightly better than this one. The art was still lovely, and it's still one we enjoyed reading with/to our homeschooled 7 year old.
A great journey around all the continents in the world, plenty to keep a reader occupied. A bit disappointing that Scotland was portrayed with the stereotypical tartan & highland games but..... (I am Scottish). Nice range of information to keep young people, and especially those who find reading challenging, interested & willing to keep going. Nice comprehensive index.
For school I would probably buy the full size book rather than the travel edition.
