Description

Fate forced them to wed—but love united their hearts.

She was in the wrong place at the wrong time…

All Bethea Glanville wanted was to enjoy Edinburgh’s High Society in peace. Instead, she accidentally uncovers a plot to overthrow the king and gets abducted by the conspirators. And the man who comes to her rescue? Her guardian’s rakehell cousin, Camden Kennedy. But her misfortune doesn’t end there. Now stuck with the infuriatingly attractive Scot and his band of dangerous mercenaries, the only way to salvage her reputation and guard her virtue is to announce her betrothal…to Camden.

He was in the right place at the right time…

As a covert agent for the Crown, Camden has assumed many identities. The one title he never expected to have? Husband. But that was before his mission to catch a spy led him to Bethea. A marriage of convenience is the best protection he can offer her. But who will protect him when the spirited, stubborn beauty eventually demands an annulment and leaves—taking his heart with her?

Their attraction is undeniable. But can a marriage that began for all the wrong reasons ever become something real? Or are Bethea and her Highland marauder destined to go their separate ways?

This book is the seventh in Collette Cameron’s Heart of a Scot series. The heroine, Bethea, overhears a plot against the king and she is kidnapped. The hero, Camden, rescues her and in doing so is forced to marry her. Friends become lovers. I did not like that one of the villains gets away, to resurface in the next book perhaps? I received an ARC from NetGalley and Dragonblade Publishing for my honest review.

This novel was another enjoyable read by Ms. Cameron. A delightful tale that involves a conspiracy, kidnapping, adventure, and love. Bethea Glanville wants to marry for love and will accept nothing less, until she is caught in a terrible position which results in her kidnapping. Camden Kennedy works for the crown and has no desire for a wife, but it does not stop the thoughts of having Bethea in his bed. Everything changes for them when Camden finds Bethea and the only way to protect her is to say she is his betrothed. Neither wanted not expected the marriage and Bethea has no plans on consummating the marriage, for she does not know if Camden loves her. Camden realizes he loves her and she is the only woman for him, but now he has to convince her of that.
I received this novel as an ARC from net galley and the publisher. Thank you! all thoughts and opinions are my own.

Bethea encounters a conspiracy at a party and is kidnapped so that she may be forced to become someone's bride. But luckily the handsome Camden, who she's had her eye on for a while, comes to her rescue.

I'll admit that I was a bit hesitant to try this, given the length (I usually consume much longer Scottish romance tales). But the author really did manage to pack a lot in. I felt like I got a full book's worth of story in this novella and I found it wonderfully uncomplicated reading for just before bed.

Will her rescue be her ruin or the beginning of a happier future ...

What a fun short read it was, a bit of action, a knight in shining armor, a damsel in distress and some very scorching moments.
This is my first read in this series, and when I suppose some of the side characters had their own story in it, it can be read as a standalone as at no moment did I feel lost.
Bethea was like many young woman, she had an idealized vision of the society’s season, when it is more often the occasion to have one’s toes crushed, to learn to sweep off lecherous hands, And to avoid cunning people. In all, a disappointment. Even more when she stumbled upon the wrong place at the worst moment.
Now she finds herself kidnapped and utterly ruined. While she was caught off guard, she quite faces her ruin head held high.
Camden works for the peace of his lands, but he can’t let the woman whom he is attracted to become a pawn in other men’s game. Plus, he also feels in his guts something is not right. And while a marriage of convenience is in order, he will be only too happy to transform it in a real one, if his new bride allows it.

And while the resolution of the spy plot did not involve them, and I was expecting at one time for them to face their nemesis, so I held my breath until the very last part of the story, it was a sweet and sensual romance about two persons circumstances brought closer when they were circling one another for some time.
I even googled the villain’s name but as Mrs Collette Cameron explained by the end of the book, the plot is fully fictional, still I was curious to learn more about this period I do not know.
4.5 stars.

Now I do suppose the next book with be about Bethea’s sister and Camden’s friend.

I was granted an advance copy by the publisher Dragonblade Publishing, here is my true and unbiased opinion.

So, again, I am jumping into a series midway. This is my first Collette Cameron. This story was great as a standalone. The heroine's guardian and wife, Keane and Marjorie, have their own story (book 6, To Defy a Highland Duke) and they are in this story, but not in a way that is confusing being read out of order. It might better establish how the heroine, Bethea, knows the hero, Camden, though. I'm not sure if her books are usually shorter, but this one was. Goodreads says about 150 pages.

Bethea finally is getting to enjoy the high society life in Edinburgh. Wanting to dance, flirt, and shop she is endlessly frustrated that her time instead seems to spent avoiding a smelly, pushy earl that keeps trying to force marriage on her. Trying to find a back way out of a social gathering leads her to instead be caught by conspirators and traitors to the crown.

Camden has been attracted to Bethea but has kept his distance. She is his cousin's ward after all. Being a spy also has him wanting his distance to protect his family. But when he unexpectedly finds Bethea completely caught in the middle of his mission, he will do anything to save her.

Give this story a try if you are in the mood for
-marriage of convenience
-ruined heroine
-a novella that feels perfectly developed
-story involving a spy organization
-more of a beta hero – he is not pushy or aggressive but wonderfully caring and conscious of his heroine's feelings.

I really enjoyed this story. I think it can be hard for a story to feel well done sometimes when they are shorter but I didn't feel like I was missing anything with this one. The writing really sucked me in and I felt enveloped in the story. I really liked Bethea's character development. Something I do wish was more was done from Camden's perspective. I felt I didn't know him quite as well because of this.

Just enough balance of action, tension, danger, and kisses. The steam is medium with a few kisses and 1 full scene. For some reason I thought Cameron was a clean or fade to black author and I was happy to find that wasn't the case. She did a great job building the tension and feelings though as well.

The epilogue did kind of throw me for a loop because it has characters from this story finding a happily ever after. I'm not sure if they will have a book coming out too. It was told from Bethea and Camden's perspective but I still felt like it took the focus a bit off them and their HEA.

Definitely going to be getting my hands on more Collette Cameron in the future. Cameron's writing draws you into the world and her wonderful characters keep you there until you fall in love.

4.5 rounded to 5

This was a delightful story to read and I always enjoy spending an afternoon with lovable characters:) The story involves just enough drama and intrigue to keep you turning the pages and of course it never hurts when there's a sexy highlander involved!!

Bethea (I think that's the first time I've heard that name and I love it!) finds herself in a wee spot of trouble and before she knows it, she's involved in the world of spies, secrets and suspense. Before her head has even stopped spinning, she finds herself married to Camden!! Lots of heat and passion between them but with both being stubborn people, it makes for a very interesting story.

I received an ARC of this book via NetGalley and am voluntarily leaving an honest review.

This is my fair and honest review, given voluntarily and in my own words in return for this ARC. Any time you get a Collette Cameron book you know that there will be great characters, brilliant writing and a story you will love. This is no exception.

Bethea was in the wrong place at the wrong time. She overhears a plot to overthrow the King and subsequently gets kidnapped. She is rescued (of course) by the gorgeous Camden Kennedy and to save her reputation he tells everyone they are betrothed. This leads to a wonderful realisation of feelings etc...

For such a short book, I found myself thoroughly invested in the characters. I felt the sexual tension between the characters and the moral dilemma they face in not wanting to love each other.

Read it in one sitting. It was heartwarming.

I am reviewing this book voluntarily, thanks to Netgalley and Dragonblade Publishing for making an ARC available to me.

Bethea was just trying to help her sister out when she ends up hearing about a plot to overthrow the king. Unfortunately she is caught and taken by one of the conspirators. Having been knocked out, she wakens to find Camden by her side. Is he in league with group trying to take down the king?

Camden is on a mission to catch the conspirators and never imagined that Bethea would get herself involved. When the only way to save her reputation is to claim her as his betrothed, he doesn't feel that dread he thought he would when thinking of marriage. They are forced to quickly wed. The more time he spends with Bethea, the more Camden wants to make the marriage one in truth.

Can this marriage of convenience lead our H/H down the road to happiness?

I really enjoyed reading Bethea and Camden's story. We met them in some of the other stories and I was happy to see that Cameron partnered these two together. I liked that Bethea wasn't a simpering miss and didn't go into hysterics when she got involved in the plot against the king. This was a great addition to the Heart of a Scot series!

Loved the story. It contains a kidnapping, an unexpected marriage, espionage, treason and a HEA. Bethea is kidnapping after overhearing a treasonous conversation and later saved by Camden by way of marriage. A marriage that was in name only in the beginning became a great romance. This is a great romance with a side of danger. It is well written, entertaining and holds your attention. I would highly recommend this as a great read.

The seventh book in this delightful series once again it could be read on its own but both Camden & Bethea have appeared in earlier books. Fast paced, strong characters all made for an engrossing read, which I read in a sitting & I loved every page

I love historical romances and I was looking forward to a new author.

This is a fast book, there is a lot of stuff happening but the thing is, everything gets resolved quickly. There's no drama, suspense.

I'd say more if I could but I can't because it's a short book. They are attracted since the beginning and once they're married, it's basically insta-love from then on.

The ending is filled with the names I've never heard of but that's probably because I haven't read the previous book.

If you need something quick and easy to read, try this one. For me, it was too quick and not enough action or emotions. it's not a memorable read and there could be so much more to the story, more developed than it was. A lot of questions were unanswered for me and even that little action that was mentioned wasn't enough for me. It looked better than it was delivered.

3 stars.
