Description
Marigold Heavenly Nostrils is one magical unicorn—and she knows it! But sometimes it’s harder for humans like Phoebe to understand that they can be magical, too. In the latest Phoebe and Her Unicorn adventure, the pair visits the science museum, tests out an extra-special virtual unicorn reality, and performs in the school talent show. With the help of her best friend and an emergency sparkle transfusion, Phoebe learns about confidence, empathy, and resilience—and even how to live without her cellphone. It’s all part of the very real excitement of Virtual Unicorn Experience.

This is a super cute kids comics series. I’m apparently quite in touch with my inner child since I snatched up the chance to read an advance reader’s copy and promptly dropped everything else I was reading for this. I recommend the series highly for the appropriate audience of roughly 7-9!
Best friends Phoebe and Marigold Heavenly Nostrils are back in their twelfth adventure. Together, they celebrate the winter holidays, try out for musicals and talent shows, go on field trips (not to actual fields, to Marigold's displeasure), experience magic together, and... go to trial? There is never a dull day with Phoebe and her Unicorn.
Again, amazing book in the series. It was super funny and I will totally buy it! Thanks for the ARC netgalley!
There are very few books that make both my kids (7 and 9) laugh as much as Phoebe and Her Unicorn books. This books is in line with the others in this series--silly and laugh out loud. It's not something that I recommend to study deeply, or to teach deep lessons, but it brings a lot of joy to kids.
For the ones who have never read this series, its an effortless read with vivid illustrations that normalises the presence of fantastic elements in a child's life.
Fall in love with an unicorn that is a humble braggart. Phoebe and Marigold Heavenly Nostrils (yes, that the unicorn's name) have a lot of "unique"corn time together- magical rides, experiencing the science museum, participating in talent show, or just jabbering about fantastical things.
A child can find relatable stuffs inside- ranging from eating pop rocks, to trying to save your face at competitions.
Also, you can avail a chance to be introduced to the glossary of an unicorn- like "clip-clop" in place of clap clap, and "unique corn" in place of unique!!
You'll get a lot more out of the story if you minutely see it- how vanity keeps your feet off the ground, overuse of mobile phones, how practice is the magical key to learn things, how to accept failures and never move along with pre-conceived notions.
The book has an easy-to-follow mini story lines. The comic is not text heavy which makes it easier for children to follow. Also, there is a glossary at the end to help the readers look up for words they cannot make sense of.
Psychologists are of the view that reading books regarding befriending beings who are different from the majority of the population the child normally interacts with, makes the child regard people of different cultures, races and religions as common to them. So introduce your child to the befriending of a human child and an unicorn to make your child a more sensitive and friendlier human being.💕
Virtual Unicorn Experience would be a good choice if you are planning to buy a new fantasy comics for your child. However, don't complain if they cry for a real unicorn later!!😜
Another hit from Dana Simpson! Phoebe and her unicorn, or rather, Phoebe and Marigold always end up making me smile. I don’t know how she does it but this volume was magic once again.
I have followed this series for years, and am thrilled that I got to read this new book months in advance through NetGalley. It is absolutely hilarious, and it amazes me that Dana Simpson has been able to come up with new and inventive ideas for Phoebe and Marigold Heavenly Nostrils for a dozen books.
Although this title shares some similar jokes to previous ones, it follows unique storylines, uses familiar punchlines in new ways, and continues to develop the characters and their relationships. This book is incredibly creative, and of all of the comics and short narratives, my favorite is the story where Marigold gets called up for unicorn jury duty. Everything about this is hilarious. I love the illustrations, and the judge in his wig, and the dialogue, and all of the elements that I won't mention because of spoilers. It's FANTASTIC.
This book made me laugh out loud multiple times. It is a great choice for children, teens, and adults, and as always, it seems worthwhile to point out that my teenage brother has read all of these books as they have released. Even though the pink and sparkly cover makes this look like this is exclusively aimed at elementary-aged girls, this series is perfect for anyone who enjoys creative humor, witty dialogue, and fantasy entwined with everyday life.
Another great book in the Phoebe and her Unicorn series. My daughter loves these books. We read them together or she reads them on her own. Definitely cute books that make her laugh and keep her entertained. I definitely recommend this book (and this series) for anyone who loves graphic novels!
I’m always excited for more adventures with Phoebe and Marigold Heavenly Nostrils. They are entertaining for kids and adults. Keep ‘me coming!
My 7 year old is a huge Phoebe and Her Unicorn fan, even rereading the series during quarantine. She said she liked this book a lot, then paused and asked for the next one. She decided to read this one again. 5 stars from a 7 year old!
My daughter loves the Phoebe and Her Unicorn series. Book 12 is no different. The illustrations are engaging, and she is often heard laughing out loud while reading to herself.
As a Junior High English teacher, I appreciate the play on vocabulary the author uses throughout this graphic novel. It is one of those graphic novels fun for both children and adults alike. This is great pick for the reluctant reader. You will find yourself reading it a second time through!
This is the 12th volume of the Phoebe and Her Unicorn series, and, once again, it was a delight. I love this series, and so does my seven-year-old daughter. She wanted to write this review, so here she goes:
“Phoebe and her Unicorn is a great book series. The book Virtual Unicorn Experience is one of the best ones. I thought at the beginning it was very interesting that Marigold had to say bad things about herself to keep herself from floating away every day! I thought that it was very amazing that it that she could float up high and make it a lot easier for nail polish, but I did wonder why they didn’t use that in the other books because they have had a lot of makeovers!
I think that they should’ve had more Dakota in it because she is a very interesting character with her magical hair and her goblins which is why it confused me that she was only in like three panels.
I think that is impressive that the author manages to take her daily strips and make them into a book. I think that it makes it more interesting and a lot funner to read!!”
Thanks to NetGalley for an eARC in exchange for an honest review.
Another great adventure for Phoebe and her unicorn. As always Simpson delivers a fun adventure for my daughter to laugh out loud to. Marigold and Phoebe once again adventure through different activities and humorous experiences. Well written and illustrated as always. This book stayed strong in the series.
Review from the Mini-Me Reviewer: I liked it because they were funny. I love unicorn and that Phoebe has a unicorn and that her parents KNOW that she has a unicorn. ::SPOILER ALERT:: It was funny because Marigold at the end had to go to Unicorn Court. Can't wait to read the next one!
This is my first time reading Phoebe and Her Unicorn and I totally enjoyed it.
This is highly enjoyable and 8 year-old kids might want to read this especially girls who love unicorns.
Now i have to read the first one.
Phoebe and her unicorn are back once again in their next adventure as they go on a school trip and of course Marigold teaches Phoebe all about unicorn ways, values and traditions in a super fun adventure with technology and magic causing chaos and not to make you laugh this is an awesome comic/graphic novel!
Many thanks to the publishers for allowing me to review this book for them!
Love the format of comic/graphic novel and that too on unicorns. Kid enjoyed it and finished it in two sittings. Very humorous. Unicorn is the star. Great introduction to this format for kids.
PHOEBE and MARIGOLD! You know my love for these middle grade graphic novels, it is almost pointless for me to review them at this point but I adore them SO much and want to share them with the WORLD! They are an easy and light read and they are perfect for your reluctant readers.
In this installment, Phoebe and Marigold celebrate some holidays, go to a unicorn trial, and learn a lot together. There was a lot of character growth in this book of the series though, so I thought that was wonderful. It turns out that Marigold might be holding back some of her magic from Phoebe. Luckily Phoebe knows that she doesn't always make the best decisions when magic is involved anyway.
Phoebe is even developing an actual friendship with her nemesis Dakota. It is a weird friendship but the love/hate relationship is getting better and better in every installment.
These are pretty 'girly' graphic novels but they really are a blast to read, and the humor is even fun for me as an adult. Forever interested in the adventures these two have together and a lover of this series.
I received a free digital ARC of this title through NetGalley. This series is great for whole families to enjoy together. It has a similar with to the Foxtrot Comics. It also is like an older kids Fancy Nancy as it introduces high level vocabulary words.
If you’ve read any of the Phoebe and her unicorn books this book is just a continuation. It’s conversations and fun between these unexpected friends. There’s no uniform plot, just a collection of sweet and funny comics.
All the Phoebe and Her Unicorn books are so great. I love recommending the series to kids who think they've exhausted the graphic novels section. They are always thrilled to have a new and funny title WITH unicorns! Bonus!
Another amazing collection for Dana Simpson! Flies off the shelves, easiest recommend for kids 7-12 - absolutely delightful in every way. This new collection sees Phoebe learn more about unicorn society, attend her own trial for being a human, and will be just as beloved as previous books by readers of all ages.
If I could get kids hooked on one series this would be it. I like the issues covered in this book and the vocabulary was amazing as always. I also liked that she didn’t really go through the seasons this time. All in all I just can’t get enough of these books.
What more can I say about this series? I love it!
Phoebe and Marigold's adventures (school talent shows, sparkle transfusions, virtual unicorn reality, and even surviving without a smartphone) continue in this collection and remain focused on friendship, confidence, and being yourself!
Thanks to Andrews McMeel Publishing and NetGalley for providing an ARC in exchange for my honest review. Virtual Unicorn Experience is scheduled for publication on September 1, 2020.
I loved this book! It was cool seeing what it’s like to be a unicorn! Ever should read this because they will live it too! -Erin, 8
I loved the story and the graphics. This whole series has been a delight. It will be loved by children & is a perfect reading level for 1st-4th grade. We are grateful to NetGalley for the ARC of Phoebe and Her Unicorn Book 12. -Erin’s Mom, much more than 8.
I started reading and went back to the memories of my childhood reading comics. Still now am reading. This is the first series being read by me. Phoebe and Marigold. Marigold is a bit narcist but she loved her friend Phoebe. Everything sweet and beautiful in the world is named unicorn by unicorns. Loved the unicorn and human friendship.
Another classic installment in Dana Simpson's Phoebe and her Unicorn series! Fans of the other books will love this latest addition. Funny and engaging!
Reviewed by my daughter, age 8:
I loved this Phoebe and her unicorn book! It was fun to figure out how Marigold felt compared to Phoebe. I liked this adventure!
My review:
I enjoyed this look at virtual reality and these types of experience, especially during this time in my children's lives. These books never seem to disappoint!!
Phoebe is best friends with a unicorn named Marigold, and this has some pros and cons. Unicorns have magic and can help you win a game of handball at recess or perform in a talent show, but their magic doesn't always work as planned. Phoebe and Marigold have to navigate both the human and unicorn cultures to keep their friendship strong, and they are always learning something new and interesting about each other.
I loved the fun camaraderie between Phoebe and Marigold! They are such cute friends, and I loved how they banter back and forth. Their dialogue is really funny and silly!
This comic is organized in panels like a web comic with little snippets of jokes and one-liners. I like the format and how the humor pulls the stories together.
I would love to read more from this comic. It's light-hearted and delightful!
Disclaimer: I received an e-copy of this book from the publisher in exchange for a free and honest review. All the opinions stated here are my own true thoughts and are not influenced by anyone.
Another great installment in the Phoebe and her Unicorn series, a sure bet for library's juvenile section.
This is another wonderful addition to this series. It was an enjoyable read that fans of the series will love. This is a must buy for my library!
"Marigold is weird."
This review is from by my nine-year-old daughter, Penny.
What did you like about the book?
- The fact that it was funny, like all the books.
- "Umm... Did you just type 'umm'?"
What did you not like about the book?
- I didn't not like anything. So I did like the book.
What's your favorite scene:
- (I don't know if it's my favorite scene) There was one scene where they were supposed to go home on the path, but she was going all over the path because her mane had to be blown dramatically back.
Me: "Did you whole body feel like pop rocks after reading this?"
Penny: "NO! That would be weird. But I would like to have a virtual unicorn experience."
Me: "What would you want the author to know"
Penny: "That it was fun. It was a good book, but it felt like I finished it too fast."
Me: "Have you read all the Phoebe and Her Unicorn Books?"
Penny: "Yes. Probably. Maybe not the Unicorn Whisperer. Maybe it's on Libby or Hoopla"
... and now she's looking for another Phoebe book to read.
Me: "How many stars out of five?"
Penny: "Four and a half." (she's reading Unicorn Whisperer now)
Phoebe and Marigold are at it again. Musical tryouts, talent show performances, and adventures abound in this twelfth collection of Phoebe and her Unicorn. I adore this series, it’s light, funny, and the relationship between Phoebe and Marigold is inspiring and goals. Can’t recommend it enough.

Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher I was able to read this book in exchange for an honest review.
Phoebe and her Unicorn are the new Calvin and Hobbes, and I love their stories. I definitely will purchase this one in addition to the ones I have for my school library.
Thanks to Netgalley for the advanced copy of this book, it made my kids' day!
Both my 9yo and 11yo are fans of the Phoebe & Her Unicorn series--and this newest instalment is just as hilarious as the others. I highly recommend this graphic novel for book lovers and reluctant readers alike, as well as anyone who's ever enjoyed Calvin & Hobbes.
My kids devoured Virtual Unicorn Experience in one sitting.
I like it! it" a very funny book and I enjoy it a lot. the only thing is that it includes parts that were in some of the other books in the series, but I still like it!
I received this book via netgalley and give it my honest opinion......
My 9 year old daughter really enjoyed this book and thought it was really funny, I even heard her laugh at loud to some of it! It was a delight. Well written too. I recommend this book.
It’s always an amazing sparkly day when we have a new adventure to explore with Phoebe and Marigold Heavenly Nostrils!
.
Thank you to @andrewsmcmeel and @netgalley for the ARC of Virtual Unicorn Experience by Dana Simpson! Available this September 2020✨🦄
.
When we last saw Phoebe and Marigold we explored the ins and outs of camping with a unicorn. Now Phoebe gets to experience what it’s like to be a unicorn thanks to some boredom induced by a broken cell phone, a sparkle transfusion, and special unicorn virtual experience helmets. How do you think your life would look with a layer of extra sparkle and of course a unicorn tail?!
.
This book is triple approved in this house by me and the twins 👯♀️ It has multiple laugh out loud moments and also references my second favorite Disney movie all time (here’s a hint: ooo- de-lalee).
If you haven’t read these don’t, assume they are just for kids! The sarcastic humor in this series is entertaining for all ages and unicorn lovers🦄
Yet another hilarious novel from Dana Simpson. It is no secret amongst my daughter’s friends and teachers that she is obsessed with the Phoebe and the Unicorn series. In fact, she loves these books so much it’s often her first idea for friends when going to birthday parties. After reading the latest in the series entitled, The Virtual Unicorn Experience, we’ve added it to our list of gifting options.
The Virtual Unicorn Experience describes Phoebe’s latest adventures into technology and magic. The plot line and jokes were a bit more advanced for my 8 year old this time around. Still, she adored it just the same, and I found myself laughing out loud, once again.
As a mom, I love this series. My daughter’s go-to genre is always humor. Unfortunately, humorous books for 8 year old girls become tricky to find when you have a voracious reader. I am so thankful for the Phoebe series. She is a re-reader, and these books contain a depth of humor and vocabulary that I know will grow alongside her as she ages. She finds something new in these stories each time she rereads them, which is something I cannot say for many of the other books she chooses to reread. Im certain we’ll be Phoebe fans for many years to come. Thank you to Netgalley and Andrews McMeel Publishing for the advanced reader’s copy in exchange for my honest review.
My 8 year old daughter loves these phoebe and her unicorn books. So of course when I saw this available on netgalley I had to grab it. She loved it. I'm pretty sure everyone would love to experience a virtual unicorn experience after reading this! I mean who doesn't love sparkles?
Thank you to netgalley and the publishers for my gifted copy. ❤
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
This is the second book in the Phoebe and her unicorn series and I lived it. I have thoroughly enjoyed both books I have read in this series so far and look forward to reading the rest.
This graphic novel comic book style book had me giggling away, with child and adult humour within it.
I love how each book so far has been so different to the last. The names of the unicorns are fantastic and I thought the step by step drawing pages at the back of how to draw phoebe and Marigold were a great addition to this book.
Volume 12 and this series is staying strong. I laughed out loud so many times during this volume, it was pure delight.
I love that Phoebe also has adopted the Unicorn! exclamation when proud. I must admit to also doing it now when I'm being extra fabulous or sparkly.
And talking of sparkly, be warned, this book is extremely sparkly. Love it!
Thanks to Netgalley for letting me read and review this early. This book comes out September 1st 2020
My daughter read this book. She is 8 years old and will be in 3rd grade. She has also read all the other Phoebe and her Unicorn books. In her words "It was a great book! I liked that it was a graphic novel. I liked it so much because I really like unicorns. My favorite part is beginning because the Unicorn always has to be right. Phoebe always wants her unicorn to be right even if she's wrong and it's so funny."
I love Phoebe and her unicorn! If you are already a fan of the series as I am, then this definitely contains the usual sass and chuckles one expects from the duo. But I felt it was lacking something compared to earlier books in the series - namely cameos by the goblins, the candy dragon, and Max! - but also it just lacked some pizzazz. Hopefully it’ll gain it back in the next volume! (And bring back those other fun characters!)
Thank you Netgalley and the publisher for the e-ARC.
A cute and funny graphic novel for children. Phoebe is a little girl whose best friend is Marigold, a unicorn. Together they go on adventures and help each other.
The plot it's not exactly continuous, in some it is but in others we have just different scenes not connected with the ones before but those are still funny.
I really liked Marigold, she makes many jokes and her magic powers are fantastic, her relationship with Phoebe is really beautiful. The both complement each other. I enjoyed the parts when Phoebe asks Marigold for her magic help and weird stuff happens haha, those scenes were really fun.
I recommend this to children who like fantasy and magic stories.
First impression: there’s a glossary, awesome! When I requested this, I didn’t realize that is was issue 12 in the series. It seems to be ok to read them out of order as it’s short comics about the life of a girl and her unicorn. It reminds me a bit of Calvin and Hobbes. The art is cute and cheerful and sufficiently unicorn coloured.
ARC provided by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
Loved it. I always love the phoebe and her unicorn books. Beautiful and colorful fun art and a hilarious story of friendship to match.
Enjoyed reading this with my 8-year old. The unicorns are funny as usual with their naive perspectives. Loved the timely use of virtual reality with lessons on confidence and empathy....and as always....resilience! I love these chap books turned graphic novels. Great for a reluctant reader.
A another light, fun romp between two unlikely best friends. Pheobe and Marigold bring on the humor with this new addition to the series. Fans will enjoy this one but ongoing jokes will make it hard to pick this book up without having first read the other books in the series. Good for a range of ages.
my daughter absolutely loves this series! Its adorable and funny. She is now anxiously awaiting the next one!
Every outing in the Phoebe and her Unicorn series proves to be just as delightful as the last! Another sweet, charming compilation of comics about a little girl and her unicorn best friend. Simpson continues to make me laugh and warm my heart with her comics!
I received an advance reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via NetGalley and the publishers.
This is the second book I have read about Phoebe and her unicorn. As always I love the comedy side of this graphic novel and the overall message of perseverance and empathy. The illustrations are fantastic as always and will be a fun read for my students this year!
Marigold Heavenly Nostrils and Phoebe have been friends for a number of books but their adventures are still fun and fresh. In this book, Marigold gives Phoebe a little bit of unicorn magic to help prove that Phoebe is worth being a unicorn's friend. Phoebe also goes to a meaningless trial but is disappointed with the results. We get to learn more about unicorn traditions and get to see some of our favorite characters like Lord Splendid Humility and Dakota (but no Max or the goblins.)
As always, a book worth reading: fun, fluffy, and with unicorns! Can there be anything more magnificent?
Four and a half stars
This book comes out September 1st
Follows Camping with Unicorns

Opinions are my own
Another great book in an amazing series. My daughter loved catching up with Phoebe and Marigold and is anxiously awaiting the next book.
My favorite thing about this series is that, even though Phoebe never ages, there's always something fun and fresh in each book.
Here, Marigold tries out for Unicorn Theater, and gets rejected. We witness her experience failure and insecurity, and rely on her Human BFF for support.
She also gets to serve jury duty, on a Unicorn trial against Phoebe for being Not a Unicorn. (apparently, this happens a lot).
I love Phoebe, I adore Marigold. I even love Dakota. This is such a fun series, with a wonderful message of the importance of friendship, sarcasm, and sparkles.
I received an electronic ARC from Andrews McMeel Publishing through NetGalley.
The adventure continues for these best friends. Simpson again creates a fun story and shows more about her Phoebe and Marigold. Plenty of humor and detailed illustrations.
It's a fun, laugh-worthy middle-grade graphic novel. Would say it's definitely worth the read if you're into this kind of graphic novel, the humor is simply Uni-que! Sorry, I just had to make a pun. :D
