Another great historical novel from Jen Turano! As is typical with her books, the hilarity was ever-flowing. This book follows Gabriella, a girl who grew up on the streets and an orphanage. Though she made a respectable living, when another member of her boardinghouse was accused of theft, the ladies of the Bleaker Street boardinghouse put their heads together to catch the actual thief. Gabriella's past talents as a safe-cracker are called upon and in the process, she comes back in contact with Nicholas, her former "partner in crime" (literally). What ensues is a great deal of mystery, fun and laughter as they attempt to continue seeking after the recurring thief. I had my suspicions on who the villain was, though I was still surprised by how everything played out. My favorite type of romance novels teach me about history, make me laugh and include a good mystery. Ms. Turano does such a splendid job of that! This one also had a solid faith thread as Gabriella came to see how God had not abandoned her, but had actually been with her through the years. The characters were delightful and the story line intriguing. This is one I would highly recommend to fans of inspirational historical romance, particularly with a comedic thread. Special thanks to the publisher and NetGalley for an advance e-copy of this book. I was under no obligation to provide a review and the thoughts contained herein are my own.

To Steal a Heart is a humorous Christian historical romance set in late nineteenth century America among the east-coast elite.

As with all of Jen Turano’s novels, To Steal a Heart was a charming historical romance with lots of laughs and absurd situations. This one features characters who had a previous lives as thieves and street urchins but who gained great opportunities and left it all behind ... until helping solve a case for an unjustly accused friend throws them back into it — and into each other.

I enjoyed the story very much. It was cute and fun, and hits my sense of humor on the spot. I appreciated watching the characters grow and seeing how they begin to forgive each other from past hurt.

One thing I noticed was that the male character seemed to have many flaws while the woman had few, and I didn’t appreciate that. It seemed a little bit like the woman is always in the right while the man is always in the wrong. That isn’t true for real life, and I don’t want to gain a habit of thinking of men that way by reading novels, especially since the author’s last novel had a similar theme.

Other than that, the story was delightful, and I greatly recommend it.

This book was so much fun to read! Gabriella is a terrific leading lady and totally relatable; she's been hurt in the past so she has distanced herself from others, but as she sets out to help clear her acquaintance's name, she finds herself thrown together with other residents of the boardinghouse, as well as Nicholas, and ends up realizing that maybe letting people in isn't so bad after all. Nicholas is both endearing and frustrating at the outset; he obviously cares about Gabriella and is good to employ those who need a helping hand, but he has learned to be a bit high-minded and too set in following society's ways. Seeing him change throughout the book was very gratifying. While the book is definitely funny, there are also some serious issues addressed that add depth to it (and would make it a good choice for book clubs). It's really interesting to consider how women weren't taken seriously by men and therefore might need an investigation agency comprised of women to listen to them and help them; it's also really neat to see how sometimes women's skills and opportunities were precisely what was needed to solve a crime or mystery. The way high society treated those they deemed beneath them was appalling but also makes for an interesting discussion topic.
Some of the antic throughout the book might seem a little over the top if you were to list them off, and yet, Turano makes them work and provides a highly appealing book with romance, mystery, humor, and more.
5 stars.

When one of the ladies in Mrs. Eunice Holbrooke’s boarding house is accused of stealing jewels from her fiancé’s family and being the notorious thief that has stolen jewels from numerous upper crust families in New York City of late, the rest of her friends rally to help her get justice. They are going to find out who really stole the jewels. Gabriella is their main hope because although she’s a respectable young woman now with a job as a seamstress, in her childhood she was a street rat and thief. Their mission will have unexpected consequences with Gabriella having to confront issues from her past, most notably Nicholas, who was her thieving partner as a child, deserted her for jail all those years ago, and whom she runs into at a society event and finds out he’s now wealthy and the biggest catch of the season in NYC. The boarding house ladies also discover that there are many other women in the city who need advocates to uncover answers to questions and bring justice to wrongs that the police and the Pinkertons won’t take seriously.

Turano is always reliable for spinning a great tale and writing a nice feel good story to curl up with. This one wasn’t quite as funny as some of her American Heiress books were, but it still had moments that will make you smile or even chuckle. The rather eclectic collection of women in the boarding house and how they bumble along in their investigations is very entertaining. And thanks to the investigative focus of the boarding house ladies, in this story Turano has found tactful ways to look at some of the weaknesses of upper crust society in turn of the century New York City and how those without as much of a voice in upper and lower crusts were suffering. The way the relationship between Gabriella and Nicholas builds and how they both grow through that was well done, and I liked them together. I'm looking forward to spending more time with the Bleaker Street Inquiry Agency in the future. This one's got heart, humor, mystery, and a feel good love story. Recommended to those who enjoy clean romance, Christian fiction, historical fiction, and light-hearted mysteries.

Notes on content [based on the ARC]: No language issues. There are some extramarital affairs that are exposed as the ladies do their investigating, but no sexual details, and all of them show how such relationships can have far-reaching damaging affects. It is mentioned how some girls on the street are in danger of being purchased by the lady who runs the brothel. Again, no graphic details. There are a couple instances when the good guys have confrontations with bad guys. One of those results in someone being fatally shot. Mostly it is just bumps and bruises.

As you begin this book you are about to go too balls and mingle with the 400, not don't get too comfortable or dazzled, these people, for the most are snobs.
Kind of a Robin Hood going on here, but these are former pick pockets as children, and you are going to see how they act as adults. Keep reading secrets and bombshells begin falling, and we are there to watch them drop.
An entertaining read for sure, and if you've read this author before, she doesn't disappoint!

When it comes to historical fiction, there is no author I look more forward to reading that Jen Turano. It truly comes as no surprise that Booklist has named her as one of the funniest voices in inspirational fiction. This isn't something that I have found in any other books taking place in the 1800s... or at least not to the same extreme anyway! Her books are filled with humorous situations and unique and headstrong characters that I cannot get enough of. To Steal a Heart is certainly no exception.

In this book (the first in the The Bleaker Street Inquiry Agency #1), we meet Gabriella as she is attempting to use her skills learned as a kid on the streets to break into a safe. She is interrupted when someone else arrives to break into that same safe... none other than her childhood partner in crime Nicholas. Both had turned away from crime, but found themselves at this point using their skills for good. What follows is a hilarious adventure to find the Knickerbocker Bandit... and find out the secrets of their pasts.

With humorous dialogue, a good dose of mystery and romance, I absolutely could not put this one down. Not only did I enjoy the relationship between Gabriella and Nicholas, but I loved getting to know the quirky side characters too. They certainly left me wondering what would happen with the ladies at the boardinghouse next. If you enjoy historical romance, this is certainly one worth checking out.

I absolutely enjoy every Jen Turano story I've read. Turano is a master at hilarious and quirky Gilded Age romances. Whenever I want a break from more serious books, I slip a Jen Turano book in the mix for a guaranteed delightful story that is funny and with heart. I loved this story of Nicholas and Gabriella (known as Gabe in her youth) who had been the best of friends and now encounter each other many years later. They grew up together and were street children who survived as petty thieves. They were accidentally split up and now they meet as adults. I highly recommend To Steal A Heart and I can't wait for the next story in this new series!

This is book one in The Bleaker Street Inquiry Agency series, what a great place to start. I fell in love with many of the characters in this book and look forward to reading more from this series.Gabriella Goodhue is a fun, spunky opinionated woman. I enjoyed her personality and watching her open her heart to people. The handsome Nicholas Quinn, has a good heart and many hard decisions to make. I loved the sparks between Gabriella and Nicholas. The entire Bleaker Street Inquiry Agency is full of fun, unique women, I so look forward to getting to know them all more. I loved how even though I believe this series will probably be a stand alone type read, I feel the books will continue to involve everyone, therefore your enjoyment will be magnified by reading them all. Jen Turano is one of my favorite I love her spunky writing style, filled with humor, mystery and history.

I wish Turano books would go on and on. I love everything about her books: the characters, the plots, the animals, the big reveals, the funny incidents. This first book in the new series got things off to a fabulous start.
Gabriella and her friends at the boarding house are trying to prove someone’s innocence. Surprisingly, in the midst of their “adventure,” she runs into an old friend who also seems to be up to his old tricks. Gabriella and company decide they may have just found a way to help women in unusual circumstances and so form an inquiry agency. The ladies are quite quirky and delightful. There’s huge potential for mishaps and laughs. The men in their lives are equally dashing, funny, protective, and mysterious. I can’t wait to read all of their stories. It was a great read and I’d highly recommend it.

Can I just gush for a minute about how enjoyable Jen Turano's books are? I am always a little bit giddy when I pick one up because I know I am in for a treat, and this novel was no exception.

I'm generally not a big historical fiction fan, but the way Turano combines romance, humor, and in this book, a few well thought out mysteries, makes the experience of reading a delight. The 1886 Gilded Age setting among the New York Four Hundred's privileged members provides the perfect backdrop for this enchanting tale.

I loved the characters, particularly headstrong Gabriella and her childhood friend Nicholas. The romantic tension between the two is palpable, yet they cannot and will not admit it, not even to themselves. Both have a great deal to learn about and resolve regarding their pasts before they can confront the future. The start of the Bleaker Street Inquiry Agency is thrilling, the cases that they take and solve during the course of this novel are both fun and clever, and there's so much potential for further installments in the series with the plethora of women running the agency--all with secrets they are hiding. I can't wait to learn more about Daphne and Eunice in upcoming novels.

There's a very subtle faith message in the novel, but it is very approachable for those looking for a clean, enjoyable read. Turano's inclusion of animals in her stories consistently adds to the humor--the pirate dog and the kleptomaniac parrot are just two of the hilarious characters readers will encounter. All in all, this is a thoroughly wonderful book and a very entertaining way to spend time.

To Steal a Heart
by Jen Turano
Back of the Book: “After a childhood as a street thief, Gabriella Goodhue thought she'd put her past behind her until a fellow resident at her boardinghouse is unjustly accused of theft. In the middle of breaking into a safe that holds the proof to prove her friend's innocence, Gabriella is interrupted by Nicholas Quinn, the man she once considered her best friend--until he abandoned her.
After being taken under the wing of a professor who introduced him into society and named him as heir, Nicholas is living far removed from his childhood life of crime. As a favor to a friend, Nicholas agreed to help clear the name of an innocent woman, never imagining he'd be reunited with the girl he thought lost to him forever.
As Gabriella and Nicholas are thrown together into one intrigue after another, their childhood affection grows into more, but their newfound feelings are tested when truths about their past are revealed and danger follows their every step.”
Impressions: The story was cozy and sweet but with adventure and mystery throughout.
Liked: I think this was a well-balanced book. I liked the characters and look forward to reading more of their stories. They each had their own unique personalities and stories that I’m itching to know now that I’ve gotten to know them a bit. The women had grit and wit and made a great team.
Disliked: After reading some more sobering books this book seemed a bit fluffy. That is purely situational and I think this was a wonderful book. My mind just needed reset as I began reading this.
Learned: I’m not one for formalities but this reminded me that people are people regardless of class. We should respect each other and our accomplishments but that doesn’t mean that we value others differently.
Quotes: “Intentions don’t count for much when they don’t become actions.” – I am reading James with friends and we were just discussing this topic. Faith without actions is dead, useless. It is a good reminder to be thoughtful but to also take action.

This is another enjoyable historical novel from Turano that includes a dose of humor and a good mystery. I like the idea of a motley collection of women detectives. Other women trusted them so they would investigate issues men would have ignored. These women get it done. The idea of them toting pistols and rifles is something else.

I also liked how Turano gave us an exploration of the social levels of the day. We are taken into the world of high society in New York. Appearance and reputation are so very important. They have no problems with ignoring and even shunning the poor. Turano sets up several situations that breach the barriers the wealthy set up to protect themselves.

There is not as much humor in this novel as there has been in earlier ones by Turano. Nonetheless, it was a delight to read. I was fascinated by this group of women detectives and will be watching for the next in the series.

I received a complimentary egalley of this book through Celebrate Lit. My comments are an independent and honest review.

Reliably enjoyable read!

This intro to Jen Turano's newest series has all the hallmarks of her slightly zany historical romance style, though it is perhaps a little less madcap than some of her previous works, and I actually like it better for that. Gabriella is a very sympathetic character, and it was not difficult to relate to her feelings even when they were off the mark. She's flawed, but passionate.

Nicholas is a bit different. He's a very good hero in all the check-the-box sort of ways, but maybe too good that way because he didn't seem all that believable. And while the story was quite entertaining, having a hero that was a little too biddable made for a romance that was a little too flat.

The plot and story are well done and entertaining. The book's description made it sound like the story would be about clearing the friend's name, but it's actually just the beginning of the Inquiry Agency and - not to give too much away - let's just say that the overarching plot is something that encompasses the whole setting.

An enjoyable read, and I'm looking forward to Daphne's story!

*Romance level: sweet kisses, nothing graphic

*Religion: Christian, low key & organic to the story

"Another bizarre turn to what is becoming a very strange night."

What a fun and surprisingly unique book! I was totally expecting a well-written, hilarious historical fiction set in the Gilded Age of America (which the author is known for), but this book was so much more. Filled with intrigue, mystery, a group of secondary characters who are absolutely ridiculous and lovable, and a wonderful theme of looking at the heart and not the outside of a person, this book clearly demonstrates why Jen Turano is such a beloved author of historical fiction.

I enjoyed getting to know Gabriella, a reformed thief who is sassy, impulsive, headstrong, temperamental but also loving and loyal. Nicholas is her former partner in crime and best friend who is now a high society gentleman of means and his gentle sweetness and protectiveness are endearing. Though they start off on the wrong foot during an unexpected reunion, they keep getting thrown together. As Gabriella and her housemates form Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency to solve mysteries and grievances throughout NYC, Nicholas and his friends become further and further involved in the welfare of the ladies of the Agency. There is plenty of humor and adventure from the start and the plot moves at a quick pace with quite a few surprises thrown along the way. A jewelry thief, plotting and vicious society matrons, and questions about Gabriella and Nicholas' parentage will have you scrambling to figure out the pieces of this fantastic puzzle. It's a great start to her new series and I can't wait to see what the author has in store for the next book.

Jen Turano is known for her humorous, historical romances, and her newest debut series begins with a book that doesn't disappoint. Gabriella Goodhue grew up on the streets stealing to make her way through life; but now in the late 1880's she is a seamstress living in a boardinghouse with a group of women. She loves to solve mysteries and help women who are having problems. But the Knickerbocker Bandit may put a stop to her future unless a friend from her childhood can help her out.

Gabriella was so strong and independent, and I loved all her disguises that helped her find solutions to mysteries/problems. Her friend, Daphne, kept me in stitches between her constant note taking for her books and her continual fainting spells. Nicholas was definitely the perfect hero and learns that not all women want to be pampered and have choices made for them. Windsor, the one eyed dog who only answered when you spoke Pirate, the feisty, gem stealing parrot, and Precious, the poodle were humorous additions to the cast.

Another wonderful gem from Jen Turana, and I can't wait until the next book releases.

Ladies of society don’t expect love, nor do they expect their hearts to go pitter-patter over their future husbands. - from To Steal a Heart

Oh my gosh!! I would give this story more than 5 stars if I could - the scrapes, twists, turns and laughter didn’t quit until the most surprising end. The author has once again started a new series with a bang, that will most certainly follow through into all subsequent novels.

They tell me what I want to hear, while you tell me what I need to hear. - Nicholas to Gabriella Nicholas and Gabriella, friends since childhood, have a relationship that has spanned the years, even though their lives diverged into two very different paths. A chance encounter brings even more hilarity to this story.

Between dogs that are particular to certain people or speech patterns, someone forever taking notes when not swooning and ladies totally unfamiliar with their required tasks, the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency starts off with the reader wondering how they will ever survive their first case. Be ready to chuckle frequently and laugh out loud at other times. This novel is Jen Turano at her best!

This book was a much needed respite during frustrating and anxiety-inducing times. I always so appreciate Jen Turano’s sense of humor and the crazy antics found in her stories, but seldom have I needed it more so than right now. With a world in chaos, finding some rest in a fictional world where I know a happy ending is waiting after all the twists and turns . . . it’s a gift. And I loved every minute of it!
As always, Ms. Turano kept me smiling and laughing throughout the story! It does have some serious moments and somewhat dark themes at times (cue, the villain), but overall, it’s a fairly lighthearted read and just what this tired mind needed. I adored getting to know a new cast of characters and am already so excited for the next book! Gabriella and Nicholas are old friends who lost one another for a time and I greatly enjoyed their reunion. Daphne is quite a trip and I’m exceedingly curious regarding Eunice’s story, which I’m hoping will be explained more in future books. The mystery kept me intrigued, though I did have a fairly decent idea of “whodunit,” and I enjoyed reading about some of the cases the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency took on.
My only mildly negative comment is that I found a bit of the ending rather superfluous. But it did tie things up quite nicely, so it worked out in the end.
Overall, I greatly enjoyed this story and would highly recommend it to anyone who likes zany historical fiction.

Jen Turano captured my attention on the first page and carried it through all the way to the end. The twists and turns of this mystery held me captive, and I loved how all the different characters found their way into the story.

Gabriella and Nicholas were wonderfully crafted and the execution of their romance made for much laughter and the required moments of “Aww. That’s so sweet.”

It’s always fascinating to journey with a character as they discover the God they’d thought had abandoned them had actually been walking alongside the entire time. We are loved. Something Gabriella had trouble remembering until Nicholas waltzed back into her life.

Excellent historical fiction that’s certain to entertain your funny bone while keeping your love for romance flourishing.

I always love Jen Turano books and this is no exception. I love the stories because of the romance and the laughter. This story almost had me in stitches. I did not want to put the book down. I love that these women work together to help their friend and then others. There were many twists and turns and we learn a lot about both Gabriella and Nicholas. I look forward to the next book in this series to learn about more of the women in the boardinghouse. I received a copy of this book from the author for a fair and honest opinion that I gave of my own free will.

Jen Turano's quirky characters are always a delight. To Steal a Heart's romance and mystery, set in the Gilded Age, are just plain fun. This lighthearted, feel-good story is perfect for these difficult times. Gabriella Goodhue and Nicholas Quinn, raised together as street children, are now reunited as more reputable adults, but their past is nudging its way into the present. The many secondary characters whose lives are woven into Gabriella's and Nicholas' are key to the story and will embed themselves into readers' hearts, readers who will be thrilled that there are more Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency books to come. I am grateful to have received a complimentary copy of To Steal a Heart from Bethany House via NetGalley without obligation. All opinions expressed here are my own.

Jen Turano's To Steal a Heart is a humorous piece of historical fiction. One of the best things about these stories is seeing how "proper" society has such difficulty adjusting to those who buck the trends. It is so laughable to imagine the characters shaking things up amongst the elites or elite wannabes.

Gabriella is an interesting character. Some of the best parts of the story involve the relationships she has made with her employer and those who dwell in her boarding house. Many characters have interesting stories and personalities, and they all flow together into an interesting mix of people.

The thing that makes this story so appealing is the absolute silliness and unlikeliness of some of the circumstances. One can get lost in the light-hearted fun and still find room for some budding romances. Enjoy the lark and smile at the antics. Sometimes real life can be too intense and this book provides a nice diversion.

With her typical humor, To Steal a Heart is another winner from Jen Turano.

Turano always managers to write great banter and witty dialogue. From the moment Nicholas and Gabriella reunite, their banter had me laughing out loud. I love a good friends-to-lovers story, and this story was perfect.

But even though Nicholas and Gabriella were my favorite, I loved the interactions between all the characters. While some are wacky and eccentric, they’re still lovable. Turnao did a great job fleshing out the supporting cast. I’m looking forward to the next books in this series.

The romance was great, but I have to admit, the mystery intrigued me the most. The characters try to help a friend who’s been framed. And then they have their own personal mysteries to solve. Just when things calms down, Turano throws another curveball that had me anxious to reach the end.

I also loved the spiritual aspects of the novel. There are some great conversations about God’s sovereignty and His will for our lives. While the spiritual aspects aren’t as overt as some other Christian novels, the conversations provide some great food for thought. And they encourage readers to evaluate their own relationship with God.

Overall, To Steal a Heart is a well written romance that have you laughing even as you swoon.

To Steal a Heart by Jen Turano 4 stars

This first book in Miss Jen’s new series is delightful. Jen Turano never fails to me laugh. It’s set in the Gilded Age when those in high society only mingle and marry among themselves. The women at the boarding house bonded together to help Jennette clear her name. In their first “adventure”, Gabriella met her long lost friend Nicholas. It was easy for them to become friends again because of their shared past. Gabe is wary most of the time due to the fact that Nicholas is now part of New York four hundred.

I like that the romance between Gabriella and Nicholas is not overwhelming. It just flows naturally as a by-product of their old friendship and current situations. The focus is on the activities of the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency. The women are fun with eccentric characters and entertaining “adventures”. Daphne is most interesting to me. Their disguises and antics are hilarious but I was also anxious that they will be caught in action.

It took me about three chapters to be fully immersed on what was going on but I’m glad I continued reading. I want to reread it. I like how the story unfolds, the unexpected revelations. the new-found family and a new purpose in life for Nicholas and Gabe. It’s an entertaining read.

Jen Turano manages the perfect balancing act between the lighthearted and suspenseful with To Steal a Heart, the first in her new Bleaker Street Inquiry Agency series, a task that can be difficult, with the book sometimes feeling a bit too much of one and not enough the other. But with Turano’s natural tendency toward witty repartee, it all feels like a natural fit with the light addition of a bit of intrigue to the plot with the twists and turns.

Add to that that it centers my favorite trope: Gabriella and Nicholas are childhood friends who bonded as street thieves prior to making new lives for themselves after Nicholas abandoned her, then finding themselves thrown together again years later when circumstances compel them to work together.

I enjoyed seeing them come to terms with the lingering issues and feelings between them while working on the case, and there was just such a charm to their dynamic. They play off each other very well, and I rooted for them throughout. And they are also complemented by a stellar cast of supporting characters, and I can’t wait to see whose story is next.

I enjoyed this book, and think it will delight both longtime fans of Turano’s and anyone looking for a sweet, funny historical romance.

Oh how I lingered in the first chapter knowing this was going to be another classic Jen Turano laugh til it hurts story. The banter between Gabriella and Nicholas is pure entertainment. Could two people dislike each other more? Or do they secretly still have feelings for each other and don’t want to admit it? I knew this chapter defined the story and I was ready to catch a ride to an adventure that I will not forget. Having a lookout that faints hardly helps Gabriella in her mission. Nicholas arguing that whatever plan Gabriella schemes up is destined to fail , heightens the intensity of these two characters. So let’s see where we go on this trip.

I loved the fainting couch and laughed out loud as it seems to be “the thing” to have for women in distress. Of course there is also “vapors” that need to be on hand at all times. My oh my these ladies in the story are so over the top emotional that I couldn’t help snickering as the author uses her dynamic writing skills . I shuddered when one character said, “You’re almost twenty, Maryanne, and at such an advanced age, you need to marry this Season.” The talk around town is a big event coming up and every unattached female is vying for the attention of a certain man.

Now I must stop here to talk about my two favorite characters. They are none other than the witty and mischievous Gabriella and the dashing Nicholas. They once knew each other but something happened for Gabriella to well how should I put this? Oh yes she doesn’t want to ever see him again or does she? I loved the idea of them working together and discovering what they really mean to each other. We get a peek at their past and I liked how the author showed us pieces of what it was like as one lived on the streets while the other was taken in and well cared for. Does Gabriella hold any jealousy toward Nicholas because his life seemed to turn out better than hers?

The story is filled with excitement as Gabriella finds herself using her “street smarts” to help solve a mystery. I loved the idea of a lady inquiry agency and how so many women were in need of the service. There are a few minor characters in the story that almost steal the show. Their questionable traits are fun to witness as one faints at the drop of a hat, and others who don’t seem to be able to drive a carriage without causing chaos. There is much to endure in this story and I can’t overlook the moments when Nicholas and Gabriella let down their guard and draw close to one anther.

I can’t wait to see where the author takes us in the next installment of this series. Be sure you notice a certain dog and parrot in the story. They bring more comic moments to add to a story that shines with friendship, faith, intrigue and rekindling relationships.

I received a copy of this book from Celebrate Lit. The review is my own opinion.

A delightfully fun, entertaining, witty work of art. I read this while sick in bed and it was the perfect way to pass an afternoon. I laughed out loud and could not put this book down. Gabriella is head strong and too smart for her own good. Thankfully, Nicholas knows this and loves her, exactly as she is, both past and present. Though there are misunderstanding to sort out, the two of them together is pure chemistry. The secondary characters are truly the ones who had me laughing the hardest and I cannot wait to learn more about them in future books. A fun who-done-it, inspirational read that I highly recommend. I received a complimentary copy from the publisher via NetGalley and all opinions expressed are my own, freely given.

How fun! This book has interesting characters that will make you smile, frown, wonder how snobby can you get and a beautiful romance with ups and downs. Loved how the ladies in a boardinghouse became an investigative agency and the interesting jobs they take on. You can't go wrong with a Jen Turano book!

Turano has given us another good story with this one. Coming from a boarding house, we now get this good new series of women who are working on being an inquiry agency. What a neat name! Gabriella and Nicholas, even Daphine, the characters were all fun to read about. From the historical time frame, to the mystery to solve, to the romance, I enjoyed this tale. It has humor that I love in this author's stories, and frankly, it's just charming. By the end of the book, I think more than one heart was stolen because I'm won over waiting for more books in this series.

Thanks to Celebrate Lit for my copy of this book. This review is mine, left freely.

Another fun and humorous tale from Jen Turano the queen of historical humor.

My first glimpse of this cover had me convinced that I would absolutely love this story, and I was oh so right!
Jen Turano gives us her classic style tale, but this one has an added punch - it has a mystery mixed in.

Gabe is by no means a society girl. She grew up an orphan, and even learned how to be an excellent thief. But she's come a long way. Now, she's helping other people with her knowledge, and is a founding member of the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency.

She also runs into her old friend Nicholas, who she hasn't seen in years. Dare she trust him again, after he abandoned her so long ago?

Jen Turano has such a way with words. Her stories always have me chuckling inwardly, and sometimes even out loud.
Full of mystery, mayhem, and many funny scenes, this is a story you won't want to miss!

What a delightful novel! Let’s be honest, I love everything that Jen Turano writes, but I do think that she continues to get better and better with every fun series! I love the quirky characters and humorous dialogue, not to mention the hilarious escapades our hero and heroine find themselves in on a regular basis. This novel also has a bit of mystery as they attempt to solve a crime, which adds additional depth to the story. I also loved the growth of the characters, both individually and together, and enjoyed the integration of spiritual themes. I really liked this book and look forward to more in the series!

Can Jen Turano write a bad story?! The answer is an emphatic, “NO! No, she cannot.” To Steal a Heart is fantastic. Here are all the reasons I love this book and why you should purchase a copy ASAP:

***The women at the Bleeker Street boardinghouse. Each one is unique and quirky in her own right, and they all bring the funny. I laughed out loud so many times at their antics I lost count. The best thing about these women though is their loyalty to one another. These women will literally do anything, and I do mean anything, to help each other out. In a day where neighbors are turning on neighbors, it was so refreshing to read a story where a group of women from all walks of life comes together to support rather than tear down.

***The tension — this story is surprisingly tense in so many ways! There’s romantic tension between Gabriella and Nicholas. There’s tension between the classes. There’s tension among the upper elites. There’s tension between men and women. There’s tension between the good guys and the bad guys. There’s even romantic tension between two doggies (I’m not kidding — it’s adorable). The tension is so well written in this novel I could not stop turning pages.

***The relationship between Gabriella and Nicholas. The chemistry between these two characters is evident from their first interaction. When they first meet it has been many, many years since they last saw one another, and, boy, do they have a lot to learn about each other. I very much enjoyed their journey back to friendship. And, I love how their old friendship blossoms into new friendship into a very sweet romance. To me, it is all very realistic and just perfect! The fun interplay between Gabriella and Nicholas had me smiling the whole time.

***The bad guy is BAD. I’m talking skin-crawling bad. I was captivated by the chapters he’s in because I needed to know how Gabriella and Nicholas were going to get out of his grips. This bad guy may be one of the best bad guys I’ve ever read.

***The message. Sometimes it feels like God is a million miles away. Sometimes it seems like He works a lot in some people’s lives but neglects others. Of course, this is not true. Feelings can be deceptive. Gabriella has had a lot of bad in her life. It 100% feels like God isn’t around for her. But when she looks back on her past and the path she’s taken it’s very clear God has been there the whole time. We, humans, get so caught up in the NOW that we often forget to pause, take a breath, and reflect. I find that when I do reflect on my own past I can clearly see God in every step I’ve ever taken. This is a great reminder for all of us!

There really is so much to love about To Steal a Heart. I could go on and on with my praise! Jen Turano hit this one out of the park. I highly, highly recommend this outstanding Historical Rom-Com.

I received a review copy of this novel in eBook form from the author, Jen Turano, via Celebrate Lit. In no way has this influenced my review. The opinions expressed in this review are my own.

I was so excited when I found out that Jen Turano was releasing a new series called The Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency. I was even more so when I had the opportunity to read the first installment, To Steal a Heart. It is exactly what I would expect from Jen. It was so much fun with lots of laughs and delight. I was entertained with Gabriella and Nicholas from start to finish. This is such a sweet and clean romance with a touch of mystery and suspense. This one is among my favorites I have read by this author.

To Steal a Heart is getting a very well deserved five plus stars from me. I highly recommend it for readers who enjoy historical romance. I look forward to the next installment from The Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency series, To Write a Wrong.

I received To Steal a Heart from the publisher. This review is one hundred percent my own honest opinion

To Steal a Heart
by Jen Turano
Book 1 in the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency series
Rating: 4.5/5
Release date: November 17, 2020

Wow! I never stop laughing when I read any of Jen Turano's books. I'm always excited to dig into her world and see what shenanigans her characters are up to. The combination of quirky but strong-willed female characters always makes for entertaining stories that you won't want to stop reading.

Gabriella "Gabe" Goodhue has not had the easiest life but she is a strong, independent woman living in a boarding house with a job as a seamstress. Having grown up on the streets of the Lower East Side of London, Gabe dressed as a boy and got into trouble with Nicholas Quinn until she got caught and was sent to an orphanage. She's surprised to see Nicholas again while attempting to break into a safe after thinking he abandoned her all those years ago. This chance meeting has Nicholas floored that Gabe is back in his life and although he's learned to be a society gentleman, he still wants Gabe to understand what happened. The mysterious Knickerbocker Bandit is still at large and Gabriella is on the case to solve the mystery. Together Gabriella and Nicholas embark on an adventure to discover the truth about their pasts and what it means for their future.

As always, Jen Turano can weave a ridiculously funny story that still has romance, drama, and mystery. Her main characters are lovely and have a past that has made them who they are. I love being part of their journey to find out who they really are and I loved all the other characters too. As a big fan, I've read all of Jen Turano's books and enjoyed reading about places/characters from some of her previous series. The other supporting characters bring much needed intrigue and hilarity to an already fun script.

Highly recommend if you enjoy historical fiction that has humor, romance and mystery.

My thanks to the author and CelebrateLit for providing me with an ARC of the book. All opinions expressed here are entirely my own. No positive review was expected and no compensation received.

Have I said yet in any of my reviews that you can't go wrong with a Jen Turano book? Because if I haven't, I'll say it now. You can't go wrong with a Jen Turano book. To Steal a Heart has one of the best opening lines of any books that I've ever read. You're immediately introduced to Gabriella and how she used to be thief. And on top of that, there's mention of being arrested after she snuck into a high society costume ball. If that doesn't catch your attention, I don't know what will.

Gabriella has left behind a childhood of crime. She was out on the streets at a young age and was a thief to survive. Nicholas was her closest friend and "partner in crime." That is, until they were caught, Gabriella went to an orphanage, Nicholas got away, and she never heard from him again. Now they're both adults and run into each other while both trying to solve the same mystery, unbeknownst to the other. Then they are constantly thrown together as Gabriella works cases for her inquiry agency among high society women where Nicholas spends quite a lot of time having been rescued from his life of crime and raised in that same high society. She doesn't want to let him back in and give him the power to hurt her again. But will he?

I will say that I felt like I had a harder time getting into the story at first. But I have been trying to break out of a reading slump which may be to blame for that slow start and not the author or plot line of the book. Once I was able to really dig into this book, I was hooked. There were some twists I saw coming, some I kind of saw coming but wasn't 100% correct on, and others I didn't see coming at all. There's always a good bit of intrigue in Jen Turano's books without being over the top suspenseful.

I received a complimentary copy of this book and I'm leaving an honest and voluntary review.

To Steal a Heart by Jen Turano is the first entertaining installment The Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency series. We go back in time to November of 1886 in New York City where Gabriella Goodhue is working to prove the innocence of friend and housemate, Miss Jennette Moore. She thought her days of skullduggery and thieving were behind her, but Gabriella’s skills are needed. Gabriella soon finds that there is another party working the case and it is none other than her old thieving partner, Nicholas Quinn. Gabriella is none to happy to see the person who abandoned her nor is she willing to team up with him. Fate seems to have other plans as the pair are thrown together in one situation after another. Friendship is rekindled and new feelings begin to bloom. I laughed so often while reading To steal a Heart. There are a variety of quirky characters with Daphne, a female mystery writer who finds herself in unusual situations and tends to swoon frequently, standing out. I did find the beginning of the story confusing until the explanations began and characters were identified. Once I understood what was happening, I just kept reading. I did not want to put down my book. I thought the author captured the time-period with the language, attitudes, conveyances, fashions, etc. I also enjoyed the descriptions of the opulent homes, balls, parties, and New York City. The pacing varied in the story, but there was so much going on that I tended not to notice. The mystery was fun. There was one bit of information early on that gave me a clue as the guilty parties’ identity and I was eager to see if I was correct. It was a riot following Nicholas and the ladies of The Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency as they worked the case. I chuckled, giggled, and outright laughed my way through this engaging historical novel. The ending was delightful. To Steal a Heart has faith, humor, intrigue, love, and mystery. I am eager for Daphne’s story in To Write a Wrong. To Steal a Heart is a lively historical novel with a one-eyed pirate loving pooch, a gawky writer, curious costumes, matchmaking mamas, missing gemstones, gossip galore, and messy skullduggery.

To Steal a Heart is a fun, light-hearted romance with a hint of mystery. Anyone who is familiar with Jen Turano’s work will expect a cast of endearing (and somewhat crazy) characters who get into all sorts of hilarious situations. They will most certainly not be disappointed!
While I really enjoyed the quirky characters that make up the Bleaker Street Inquiry Agency, I did hope that the mystery element would be a bit more prominent. It seemed to stay in the background for most of the book.
The main characters—while having all the necessary requirements of good main characters—failed to captivate me. It’s most likely due to my own personal taste, and I’m sure that many other readers will adore them (they were very likeable as main characters). For me, two supporting characters (namely Daphne and Eunice) completely stole the show! Between Daphne’s hysterical quirks and Eunice’s mysterious past, I was intrigued as I was entertained during every scene they were in.
The romance was handled wonderfully. While it developed a little slower than a typical historical romance, I thought it worked perfectly with the personalities of Gabriella and Nicholas. It was sweet and felt natural.
As book one in a series, I’d say it has successfully done its job in setting the stage for more funny, historical romances with a dash of intrigue. I cannot wait to read To Write a Wrong (Daphne’s book), which releases next year.
I’d recommend To Steal a Heart to fans of light, humorous romance, and historical romance set in the 1880s.

To Steal a Heart, by Jen Turano, is the first book in the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency series. The story takes place in New York in 1886. This is a Christian historical fiction story with strong characters, mystery, suspense and a touch of romance. Jewelry has gone missing and the wrong person is accused of stealing it. Gabriella and her friend are trying to find the real thief when her childhood friend, Nicholas, shows up in the very room they are searching. Since their parting as children, Nicholas has been adopted into higher society and Gabriella lives in a boarding home and works as a seamstress.

I thoroughly enjoyed this story. It is very well written and easy to envision. This is a nice book to read to just get lost in. As Nicholas is entering the season of having to choose a wife, Gabriella is becoming a strong, independent person. I enjoyed the humor in the story, of Gabriella’s friend and helper who is always writing in a notebook and has tendencies to fainting and of the lady trying to handle the horses driving the coach. I was totally surprised by the mystery surrounding Nicholas’s adoption by a wealthy man.

I received a e-book copy of this book from Bethany Publishing and Celebrate Lit through NetGalley, this is my honest review.

To steal a heart is a delightful book. I loved the dogs in the story. I loved how Gabriella had so many disguises. All the different dances they went to were fun too. Gabriella is trying to find out who the thief is to clear the innocent one. Gabriella is such a fun character.

I received a complimentary copy of the book from Celebrate Lit. This book review is my own opinion.

To Steal a Heart by Jen Turano is the first book in The Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency series. And just like her other novels, this story is full of laugh-out-loud fun. The first few chapters had so many weird circumstances, odd conversations, and organized chaos that I think I giggled the entire time (and may have had to explain my sudden giddiness to my co-worker). I loved all the ladies of the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency and their eccentric personalities. The idea of a hodge-podge group of women helping other women from all walks of life with their troubles was thrilling, adventurous, and downright entertaining. The disguises (I can only imagine!) Safecracking. Window scaling. Ahh--never a dull moment with these ladies. I cannot wait to get to know these ladies further with the rest of the series!
Gabriella and Nicholas have complicated pasts, which I loved delving into as the story progressed. There was always one more layer, one more revelation that twisted the story a little bit more and kept me on my toes. I loved their shared friendship as children, and I loved watching them find each other again as adults. Gabriella is a favorite with her strong and capable personality (and bluntness), but I also loved how Nicholas (ever the gentleman) embraced her independent and stubborn nature and supported her in all her endeavors.
Any fan of Jen Turano and humor-filled Christian historical fiction will enjoy this story. Be prepared to have the ladies of the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency confound and astound you. Oh, and be prepared to read using your best pirate accent. ;)
I was given a copy of this book by the publisher with no expectation of a positive review. All opinions are my own.

What an ingenious way to introduce a whole slew of new characters and all their possible stories. To Steal a Heart is the first in the Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency which begins with a group of boarding house ladies that all have secrets. Throw in a couple of men to help them get around and be the muscle and you have a very unique agency that addresses the needs that ladies from all walks of life can come too. Especially when no one believes their complaints.

This first story centers more on Gabriella, a former child street thief, who runs into her former street urchin partner, Nicholas Quinn who is now quite a gentleman. One horrible night separates these two and has them following very different paths until they converge again in adulthood. Gabriella is now the know how for this up and coming new agency.

Rife with author Turano's trademark humor, these two again renew their friendship, Gabriella reluctantly, and sets them on the path to love. I liked the way Gabriella opens Nicholas's eyes to just how snobbish society still is. Especially since he seems to have forgotten his beginnings.

This story had adventure, funny disguises, mystery, evil men, true love, and a whole host of new characters that are just a little bit off, if I might say. And I look forward to reading everyone of their stories and uncovering their secrets.

I received a copy of this novel from the publisher. I was not required to post a positive review and all views and opinions are my own.

The book begins dark and mysterious but doesn’t stay that way long as Gabriella finds herself with an unlikely partner in crime. Instead of committing the crime like she had done long ago, Gabriella is helping solve a crime. To her surprise, a friend from the past appears and makes her face her past she thought was long past.

Once again, Turano has mixed humor on every page while solving mysteries and getting to the heart of forgiveness and moving forward from past hurts. She uses twists to make the book unpredictable. As always, this book was entertaining and hard to put down.

As the first in the series, I can’t wait to see what else will come to the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency. With a plethora of dynamic characters, it is hard to pick a favorite, but I really enjoyed Daphne. She was an unlikely partner in crime but always pulled off her part. I loved her always carrying a notebook to use in her next novel.

I would highly recommend reading this book. I received a complimentary copy of this book. All opinions are my own and I was not required to leave a positive review.

What a great book! I love this author and everything that Jen Turano has ever written has been wonderful. Her books are always on my must-read shelf. I may have read it as soon as it arrived actually.

Gabriella is a super independent and yet also very fun character. She cares about the less fortunate and wants to help fight injustice. A bit of a far cry from her thieving ways as a child. Or is she? Because what is she doing trying to steal jewelry? Well of course she’s just trying to find it and give it back to the right owner so her friend can be cleared of wrongdoing.

But as Gabriella searches she finds herself face to face with her best friend from childhood. She’s sure he and their whole group abandoned her when she was caught. No one from their group has had contact with her since that day and she went to an orphanage and then was cast out to find a job.

Can she clear her friend and keep her heart safe from the boy she gave it to as a child who is now a full-grown man of great social standing? And how did he get that social standing? He was a street thief just like she was.

The book reads fast and furious. You’re going to want to block out some time to read the whole thing straight through. I loved it and cannot wait until the next book in the series comes out and I can revisit Bleecker Street.

I have voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received through Celebrate Lit. All views expressed are only my honest opinion. I was not required to write a positive review nor was I compensated in any other way. All opinions expressed are my own. I am disclosing this in accordance with the FTC regulations.

To Steal a Heart was my first time reading a book by Jen Turano and It was a very enjoyable experience. I have heard from friends that her books are good for a long time but just never picked one up, but the synopsis on this one just sounded too good to not read it. It is the first book in a series.

Gabriella and Nicholas had great character interaction right from the start. Their easy comradery was fun to read and made me smile. I thought both characters had good character growth through the story, and I felt like I really got to know them as characters by the time the story was over (I do hope we get to see glimpses of them in future books too!). The secondary characters added some interesting layers and comedic relief in certain areas that were a perfect addition to the story.

Overall, I loved the setting of this book, the time period is always fascinating. I loved the mystery/intrigue interwoven with this story. I also enjoyed Jen Turano's vivid scene descriptions they really helped me to envision the scene as the characters saw it. I give this book 5 out of 5 stars for the great characters, fantastic humor, and for sucking me onto the story.

To Steal a Heart by Jen Turano is the first book in The Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency and you definitely don't want to miss reading it if you love inspirational historical romances with a little suspense added in.
After leaving a childhood life of crime behind Gabriella and Nicholas are reunited when Gabriella is caught breaking into a safe that proves a friend of hers is innocent of theft, but their reunion isn't all fun and games because their secrets from the past are being revealed and danger is all around them.
I'm definitely looking forward to reading more books in this wonderful series!

I was given an ARC from the author/publisher. All conclusions are mine and mine alone.

Oh my gosh, this story was AMAZING! As a reader, you know from the first page that this is going to be such a fun book. lol Things are going to go amiss and we're all just along for the ride.

And once again, Jen Turano does NOT disappoint! To Steal a Heart had me in stitches. Gabriella is just trying to help one of the gals at her boarding house find out what really happened to some jewels. Unfortunately, her sidekick/lookout/partner, Daphne isn't quite suited to detective work. hahaha You find out why rather quickly!

Not only that, we meet Nicholas almost as quickly! In one evening, the lives of so many people are dashed off into a new direction and we're all in for quite a bit of excitement. It was actually rather fun seeing how The Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency gets its start. I love how the ladies all come together for common goals.

We also start to see the different layers of Gabriella. We start to see where she's come from and how she got to where she is now. And the supporting cast of this story is also SO much apart of unfolding who she is. And I ADORE the extra characters: Eunice (please, Jen, let us know more about her), Daphne, Monsieur Villard, Rookwood, and so many more. And honestly, that's just skimming the surface because there are a lot of vital characters in this story!!

I loved how the story flowed as we follow Gabriella and Daphne on their inquiry trails. As they take up the causes of women around them, it's a battle of wits! Of course, Nicholas finds himself joining in and it only makes the events even more fun!

As with any Jen Turano book there's also the more serious side of the book where relationships are tested and villains are brought to light. I loved Nicholas and Gabriella working their way through him finding a wife while they try to iron out their past, which surprisingly uncovers more in the present. I'm telling you, this story keeps you turning the page to find out what mess they've gotten themselves into as well as reading their banter!

I'm already over the moon for Daphne's story and I've only seen the cover of it!! I can't wait!

For various reasons I found myself with very little time to read this book before my assigned review date and numerous distractions made it difficult to concentrate. How I wish I had had more time to savor this fun and entertaining tale that was exactly what I have come to expect from the talented Jen Turano. Her quirky sense of humor never fails to make me laugh and is especially welcomed during this difficult time in our nation.

To Steal A Heart is book one in Turano’s latest series,The Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency which features a diverse group of young women who have decided that they have a unique ability to obtain answers to problems experienced by other women that men tend to ignore. This particular tale centers around Gabriella Goodhue whose past as a child street thief equipped her with skills that made her the perfect person to carry out certain activities required to solve mysteries. Of course there has to be a man to add a bit of aggravation and romance to Gabriella’s life. This role is perfectly filled by her long lost childhood friend Nicholas Quinn who is now a member of society.

To Steal A Heart may well be Turano’s best novel yet with its convoluted yet brilliant plot, delightfully quirky characters, and so many twists and turns plus a surprise or two. Within the story are several other potential romantic stories for future books involving other characters and I look forward to reading them all. I particularly expect Daphne’s tale to be particularly fun. I am definitely looking forward to the rest of the series.

This harkened back to the early Jen Turano and I absolutely loved it! I have been a fan of her’s since she debuted but for me the last couple series have been heading a little bit too far down the over the top side of things. They’ve still been fun reads but I wasn’t loving them as much. So I was so excited to start this one and see that it was a lot more like her first books! I loved that Gabriella and Nicholas were both intelligent types and were both pretty straightforward. They didn’t have a lot of blundering about with each other and I loved seeing that their connection stayed strong despite the many years they were separated. They may have just been children when last they saw each other but they had a tight bond and it allowed them to pick right back up (after clearing a few things up) where they’d left off. Their romance wasn’t all that prominent, it was more of a friendship that suddenly realized they wanted more and I actually liked it and thought it worked well for these characters.
There was a large cast of supporting characters that I enjoyed (a certain one annoyed me a little at the start but I got over it) and I liked seeing all the different personalities come together.
The mysteries were fun to follow along with and there were definitely some twists.
This book was everything that caused me to fall in love with Turano’s writing in the first place and I hope she keeps it up!

Having read some of Jen Turano's books I knew I was in for a treat with To Steal a Heart. I was not disappointed. This is the first book in the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency series and the author brings to light interesting tidbits about The Gilded Age era and the New York Four Hundred society as she tells the story of Gabriella, a young woman on a mission to clear a falsely accused friend's name. As she completes her mission, she might just find she has found a family, perhaps not of blood-lines, but of an odd assortment of people who she comes to love. The story held my interest from the beginning to the end with interesting and sometimes humorous scenarios. The author does a great job with her characters, making them likable, flawed, and realistic. I really enjoyed the book and look forward to reading more from this author. Readers who like quirky historical romance will not want to miss To Steal a Heart.

I love Jen Turano books. There’s always fun, laughter and elements of faith-a great combination!

To Steal a Heart focuses on Gabriella Goodhue and Nicholas Quinn, along with the ladies of The Bleeker Street boarding house, aka The Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency.

Gabriella and Nicholas knew each other when they were orphaned children but lost touch over the years. Through a series of unique circumstances, they cross each other’s paths again, except this time danger lurks around every corner.

I loved the ladies of Bleeker Street. They are all such a hoot. The funniest in this story is definitely Daphne! Her “disguises” and antics are sidesplitting! All the ladies’ capers result in bumbling, inept escapades that somehow save the day, even when Pinkerton agents are not able to solve it!!

I always look forward to Jen Turano’s new books and cannot wait for her them. I am so excited To Steal a Heart is book one of a new series. Her stories usually focus on the Gilded Age and feature a strong female protagonist, which creates a great storyline.

Turano’s books are such a joy to read. She, without fail, has a great story from start to finish.

I received To Steal A Heart from Celebrate Lit and NetGalley. However, I was under no obligation to post a review.

Whenever you want to read a fun, unique story, grab one of Jen Turano’s unique historical novels. This first book in her new Gilded Age series offers a delightful romp amid New York City’s upper crust in 1886, along with some entertaining characters from the lower side of town. The compelling plot often seems to flow along in the background, sometimes overshadowed by the larger-than-life characters, but the engaging tale includes ongoing suspense and plenty of surprises. People from the protagonists’ past reappear in their lives to reveal details and fill in the missing elements of the main characters’ history. Join childhood friends, Nicholas and Gabriella, who were once young thieves, as they navigate the perils and pleasantries of the cream of society. I look forward to more installments of the new Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency, which is run by clever women. I received a copy from Celebrate Lit. All opinions are my own.

To Steal a Heart by Jen Turano is an adventurous and heartfelt story of two childhood friends who loved each other but were drawn apart by their contrasting upbringing.

Gabriella and Nicholas were urchins in the streets of New York in the late 1800s. They had to steal for a man that gave them shelter in return.

Gabriella dressed as a boy to avoid unwanted attention, and Nicholas was very protective of her. They were the best of friends.

One day, Gabriella was caught during one of their 'missions' and was sent to an orphanage. She waited and waited for Nicholas to come for her, but he never came.

Several years later, Gabriella and Nicholas met again in a very awkward situation. They were both trespassing on someone's house, trying to open a safe.

Things were not what they seem to be, and Gabriella was surprised to find Nicholas transformed into a wealthy gentleman while she was a mere seamstress living in a boarding house.

The story is lovely. Nicholas is conflicted between his love for Gabriella and his 'uncle's' and society's expectations. Gabriella was still hurt that he never came for her but loved him too deeply to begrudge his good fortune.

Apart from Nick and Gabe's romance, there were some adventurous and enchanting side stories with lovely supporting characters.

The ladies who live in the boarding house with Gabe were charming, particularly Daphne, a shy and observing woman who was actually a very famous writer.

I love that the ladies decided to use their many talents to open the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency to help women deal with their troubles. I can't wait to read the next books in the series. I am especially curious to learn what keeps Eunice, the boarding house's young owner, from casting away her mourning attire.

To Steal a Heart is an adventurous, romantic, and inspirational story. Great read!

This was an absolutely delightful read. The first in the new series by Jen Turano. I enjoyed getting to meet this beautiful eccentric group of women. Each of them with their own individual quirks and their love for each other willing to do anything for one another. I had many open mouth moments and laugh out loud situations.
I enjoyed the mystery surrounding the story. It was unique, wondering how they would get out of the bad guys' clutches.
Nicholas and Gabriella's chemistry was also delightful to read about the tension that keeps you turning the pages wanting to know what happens next, Gabriella's animosity towards him at the beginning.
Most of all I loved the message of taking out time to pause and listen, to reflect on what God has done for us.
This was an absolutely delightful read and I'm eager to know what happens in the rest of the series.

After spending her childhood as a street thief, Gabriella Goodhue thought she’d put her past behind her until a fellow resident at her boardinghouse is unjustly accused of theft. Using her old skills to prove her friend’s innocence, Gabriella unexpectedly encounters Nicholas Quinn, the man she once considered her best friend–until he abandoned her.

After being taken under the wing of a professor who introduced him into society and named him as heir, Nicholas is living far removed from his childhood life of crime. As a favor to a friend, Nicholas agrees to help clear the name of an innocent woman, never imagining he’d be reunited with the girl he thought lost to him forever.

As Gabriella and Nicholas are thrown together into one intrigue after another, their childhood affection grows into more, but their newfound feelings are tested when truths about their past are revealed and danger follows their every step.

My Thoughts: In this action-packed novel we are introduced to Gabriella Goodhue, a former thief who is trying to move on in life; until her friend is accused of theft. Gabriella never thought that she would set her eyes on Nicholas again until she uses her talents to help her friend. This is a novel that the reader will not be able to put down. Jen Turano is a wonderful author who brings the characters she creates and the readers together in a wonderful fictional world. In this novel, there are many twists and turns in the plot that keep the reader in anticipation. This is a story that is about trust, forgiveness, and believing in one another. This book will be enjoyed by fans of Jen Turano, for those who like historical romance and for those that like mysteries. I am looking forward to book #2 in the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency.

Wow!! This is definitely one of Jen Turano’s best! I loved it so much!
It made me laugh out loud so many times that my belly ached! It was completely hilarious, yet at the same time, there’s a sweetness and charm of the characters that made them endearing to me from page one! It was a sweet and touching romance too!
Gabriella Goodhue, a street thief in her childhood, and after outgrowing the orphanage, is now a decent woman with an honest job. But when a resident from her Boarding House is framed for stealing a family heirloom, she and her friends determine to discover who the real thief is, which ends up with Gabriella disguising as a man at a Ball so she can be able to sneak to the hostess bedroom (their main suspect) to open her safe (hoping her skills are not lost) and see if she’s the real culprit. She’s in for a big surprise as she’s found in the middle of her investigation by Nicholas Quinn, her childhood best friend and partner in thieving, who by the way has snuck up to the room with the same goal of searching the safe for the lost jewels. But their so longed reunion is not a happy one. Besides having to escape in haste, to avoid getting caught, Gabriella -or Gabe as they called her when she was a street urchin- feels betrayed by Nicholas because he never went for her, after she was caught thieving and sent to an orphanage. So, they may have the same interest in liberating Jennette from jail (Nicolas helping a Pinkerton Agent), but Gabriella is surely not partnering with him, less when she discovers that he’s now a rich and well established gentleman in New York Society.
Nicholas has always dreamed with discovering what became of Gabriella, after being told by the police that she was sent far away on an orphan train. In one of his direst moments, a very prestiged Professor takes him under his wing and educates him in every possible way -a career, vocabulary, etiquette- so he can make his own path in the world. Not only that, but Nicholas is now the heir to the Professor’s enormous wealth, so he’s turned into one of the most eligible sought after bachelors in New York Society, the four hundred. So when he discovers Gabriella, he’s thrilled, but surprised at Gabriella’s rejection and accusations of how he’s a different man, and how their social differences are now a great breach between them. But he’s not yet ready to let Gabriella go. And circumstances around the mysteries they have to solve seem to throw them together. The attraction between them is undenyable. Can Gabriella let her walls down and open down to her childhood friend again? Can Nicholas see past society expectations and rules to discover that Gabriella is everything and even more of what he really needs?
I totally loved this New Series! The Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency and its charming and spunky members were so delightful! I can’t wait for the next books to get to know their stories, especially Daphne, omg, she was hilarious!
And I loved Nicholas, although I wanted to shake him a bit at first for being so proper and snobby! But I loved his growth in this story, and I have to say he has a heart of gold! Gabriella was a spunky and strongminded woman, who knew what she wanted in life, and was earning her honest living with hard work. She has some lessons for Nicholas, but she’ll have things to learn in the book as well. I love that Jen Turano’s books are always inspirational and faith inspired. It’s a plus that most Romantic Comedies don’t always have. I’m always smiling or laughing when I read her books!
All in all, this was a delightful book that warmed my heart, and I think this is going to be a blast of a series, just by getting to know the secondary characters that hopefully will have their stories and chance at a Happily Ever After ad well! I definitely recommend this book! Five and more stars! Can’t gush enough about it!
I received a complimentary copy from the Publisher via NetGalley but wasn’t required to post a positive review. This is my honest and unbiased opinion.

From christianbook.com:

After a childhood as a street thief, Gabriella Goodhue thought she'd put her past behind her until a fellow resident at her boardinghouse is unjustly accused of theft.

As Gabriella and Nicholas are thrown together into one intrigue after another, their childhood affection grows into more, but their newfound feelings are tested when truths about their past are revealed and danger follows their every step.

This story was an interesting combination of class perspectives. I especially loved Nicholas's contradictory character of trying to fit into society to please his adoptive uncle, while also caring so strongly for those from his former life, and having a heart for those from the life he'd managed to escape. I liked that while many of the former criminals Nicholas and Gabriella had associated with were reformed and striving for better lives, it wasn't true of all of them. While some of that was merely to serve as a plot device, it rang true - some people are going to continue to make bad choices and will despise those who find a better way.

I enjoyed the characters and their growth over the book. I am excited for this series to continue, and hopefully not only get the rest of the boarding house ladies' stories, but continue to revisit the characters we meet in this one.

I give this book 4 stars. I always enjoy Ms. Turano's humorous stories and characters.

This book was so hilarious. I can always count on a Jen Turano book to put me in a good mood.
I got hooked from the first page and I was so disappointed when this story was over.
I highly recommend this book to anyone who is in need of a good, light hearted read.

Turano has created another novel with a serious plot threaded with humor as is her style. Gabriella had gone from street thief to an orphanage then to a respectable seamstress. Now she has taken upon herself to become a novice detective – or inquiry agent to be more correct. This after she forms the The Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency, along with the ladies at the boarding house where she resides. They profess to solve crimes even the skilled Pinkerton agents are unable to. Another street/urchin/best friend, Nicholas had gone from life as a thief to being accepted as one of the most eligible gentlemen of society’s Four Hundred. When they meet up again as adults they cannot deny their astonishment for how the other is living and the story behind how they came to be thus. Also they cannot deny the attraction they feel for each other. To Steal a Heart is a clean historical romance that will hold your interest as you turn the pages…….I was given a copy of this book. I was not required to give a favorable review. All comments and opinions are my own.

I must admit this is my first Jen Turano book and all I have to say is shame on me for waiting this long to read one! I have added the rest of her books to my To Be Read List!! This story hooked me right from the beginning. Right away we meet Gabrielle who is pretending to be a gentleman of society and trying to break into a safe to help her friend who has been accused of stealing. In the process she encounters her best friend from childhood Nicholas trying to do the same!

Gabrielle is the main character and she is hurting. She grew up on the streets and then in an orphanage. She believes that God has left her and her street family never cared as they left her in that orphanage never looking for her. When she encounters Nicolas she is somewhat outraged at the fact that he has been put in the good graces of society. Nicholas never knew she was put in an orphanage. Their love story is not quick by any means. She goes to great lengths to keep him at arms length. Nicholas also feels conflicted about his friendship with her as he starts seeing her in a different light. The tension between them is glorious and they are so stubborn they don't admit it for a good long while but when they do it is so sweet!

I loved that this book had such great elements such as mystery, action, romance, suspense and let's not forget comedic moments. There were times I couldn't stop giggling. It definitely kept you wanting to turn the pages. It also has a great cast of quirky characters. I cannot wait to read the next book and I hope it is all about Daphne! She was one of my favorites I could not stop laughing at her antics.

Overall I really enjoyed the book and I cannot wait to read more of Ms. Turano's novels while I wait for the next one in this series. If you enjoy historical romances with romance then this might just be the book for you!

To Steal a Heart
by Jen Turano

Though we are still treated to Turano’s signature quirky style of historical romance, which I love, To Steal a Heart isn’t quite like her other novels. There’s still zany humor and sweet romance set in the enchanting Gilded Age of New York, but it is our heroine that sets this apart from the author’s other books. Gabriella was one of my favorite Turano heroines. I feel like she was one of her most original leads, seeing as she was more spice than sugar. There was a depth to this character that resulted in a fresh new story from Turano. I also found Nicholas to be a good hero, and a perfect match for Gabriella.

While most of Turano’s novels have a thread of mystery to keep the pages turning, I feel like the elements of suspense were more pronounced in this novel, further setting it apart from her previous novels and offering her fans a new experience.

Readers new to Christian historical romance will enjoy To Steal a Heart, and veteran Turano fans will relish this new novel by her.

Talk about unique characters! I so easily loved the ladies from the Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency. I am used to being spoiled when reading a book by Jen Turano, but this one knocked it out of the park. I immensely enjoyed every moment I spent reading this book and am dying to spend more time with the characters in the next installment. I was transported to another place and time and couldn’t get enough. Turano had me laughing out loud, and I couldn’t seem to stop reading. I loved the chemistry between the characters and that they had a past. This book is a must read for anyone who enjoys Historical Romance. I can hardly wait to see what Turano does next. I was blessed to receive a copy of this book and was in no way forced to post a review. All opinions expressed are my own.

Hurrah for another Jen Turano book. If you’re not familiar with her work, each book is a fun jaunt set during the Gilded Age. It’s where society boys and girls get into all sorts of scrapes and hijinks, while sometimes mingling with the masses. Or it’s where young working men and women get into all sorts of scrapes and hijinks while trying to improve themselves, and sometimes mingle with society. To Steal a Heart mostly falls into the second category, although Nicholas has already crossed the divide between the classes and acts as a bridge for Gabriella and her friends.

The first title of the Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency series explores the founding of the Agency after Gabriella helps prove a singular woman’s innocence in a jewel theft. Nicholas and his motley crew of household staff assist the ladies when muscle is perhaps needed more than brains, although he could lose his standing as a member of The Four Hundred if his activities were discovered. Mixed in with the mystery of multiple jewelry thefts is Nicholas’ search for a bride, Gabriella’s decision to assist him, and revelations regarding their parentage. (Don’t worry, there are two sets of parents. This isn’t the Original Star Wars trilogy. We’d never have the required happy ending if that were the case!) There’s enough to keep a reader guessing until the end when the final secrets are revealed. And even then, I had a couple of questions regarding secondary characters.

Turano’s cast members stand out with their distinct personalities – including Winston the pirate dog – and there are multiple witty quickfire exchanges between the two leads. While maybe not my favorite of her novels, To Steal a Heart is a wonderful way to pass the time and I’m looking forward to reading the next book in the series, To Write a Wrong, which is scheduled for release in August 2021.

Disclaimer: Although I received an electronic copy of this book from the publisher, the words and opinions above are my own.

Fans of Jen Turano will definitely want to add To Steal A Heart to their TBR piles. Filled with Ms. Turano’s signature style of humor, To Steal A Heart will delight readers, especially considering the cast of characters.

Ms. Turano does a great job at each character adding to the story and I could imagine this as a play or a murder mystery type movie. I liked that Gabrielle wasn’t your typical heroine, and for that fact, neither was Nicholas.

The twists and turns in the story will keep the reader turning the page until the end.

I am super excited about this new series by Jen Turano. "To Steal a heart" is the first book in the Bleeker Inquiry agency series. In this book we meet Gabriella Goodhue, a former thief who is trying to move on in life. She is convinced that she will never have to return to her own life. However, her friend is accused of theft - she knows that she has to pull her old skills together and help prove her innocence. However she is stopped in her tracks when she runs into her former childhood friend, Nicholas that abandoned her. In the opening chapters you can feel the tension when they run into each other again. Daphne was one of my favorite characters - she is feisty, stubborn and clumsy - a GREAT combination if you ask me. I hope to see her in the next book.

I loved how much research and detail is in this book. The author has done such a great job dropping so many breadcrumbs into the mix so that while you are reading, and trying to figure out the mystery there are some twists and turns that are thrown in. I love that this focuses on a female inquiry agency. I did my master thesis on the use of women and African Americans as spies during the Revolutionary and Civil War. So anything along those lines is right up my alley

Reading the tension that Nicholas and Gabriella face through the book was fun - however she will need to use some of his skills to prove her friend's innocence. These two made me smile throughout the entire book.

Well written, comical, real feeling characters. Lots of research went into this to present the story to fit into real 1886 New York City back drop. I cannot wait until the next book.

I received a copy of this book through the author and Celebrate Lit blogging program -- all thoughts are my own.

4.5 stars

What do I expect when I read one of Jen Turano's books? Well, one thing for sure is to expect laughter, and laughter I got! Not only was I laughing hard, but there were moments of unlady-like snorting going on. With her signature quirky characters and comedic dialogues, Jen Turano gave The Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency series a refreshing and solid start.

I've always loved the start of the author's series because it introduces me to a slew of characters I usually have some level of reactions to. On a side note, that's also exactly why I love the author's books! Her characters always elicit some level of response from me. There are never one I would just say is doesn't matter if he/she's in the story or not. In To Steal a Heart, there are so many characters I just love. Unsurprisingly, I find myself looking forward to the supporting characters as well as the main protagonists and heroes of the story. In To Steal a Heart, Daphne truly shines from the get go. I'm almost wishing to jump straight into her story right at the close of this one. Add in the patch-wearing dog and a parrot with an affinity to shiny things, first time readers of Jen Turano may not know what hit them.

Jump into our main characters, Gabriella and Nicholas, and we find a well-rounded journey from their childhood to who they are presently in the story. The level of depth in their backstory caught me off guard in the most profound way. Their individual growth coupled with their chemistry and ability to come to terms with their faith in God, gave this book substance that one may find lacking in typical light-hearted readings.

The Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency definitely have this reader wanting to inquire more. Pick up To Steal a Heart and be prepare to find a bit of romance, intrigue, faith and a whole lot of comic relief.

I really enjoyed Gabriella’s story. This was a fun, light-hearted read. Jen Turano has her witty banter down pat; Daphne kept me in stitches throughout the entire story and now I want to read hers (hint hint)!

I love Nicholas and Gabriella’s friendship. However, their romance was a bit... delayed, and only really occurred in the last fifth of the book. But since I knew they would end up together anyways, I didn’t mind.

Also, this story had long paragraphs of monologue from all characters, and while I don’t usually like to read a dialogue-driven story, this time it was done well. Although it was a bit odd when after multiple paragraphs of plain dialogue, a character in the background popped out to straighten a tie or pull out a pocket watch.

But I enjoyed reading about Gabriella’s background and how she and Nicholas’s paths crossed.. And the Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency has a wealth of interesting future heroines!

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher through NetGalley. Opinions are mine alone.

I have read several of Jen Turano's inspirational, screwball romances before and this was one of the stronger ones. Although her books tend to follow a certain template, I never feel like I'm reading the same book! She always writes unique, strong female characters, and the spiritual message is never heavy-handed. This was a fun, light read that I enjoyed very much.

Solving Cases & Finding Love!

Gabriella (Gabe) and Nicholas grew up with a gang of thieves and pick pockets. Although they had been best friends, fate separated them. Gabe ended up in an orphanage and, as an adult, became a lonely seamstress with little means. Nicholas, because he was adopted by a rich man, became a sought-after member of New York society’s exclusive Four Hundred group.

Through a variety of circumstances, they each attempt to break into a safe belonging to one of the pillars of society—and are shocked to run into each other in the process. Despite Gabe’s unhappiness that Nicholas had never tracked her down after they were separated, she realizes the agency she has started would benefit from his help.

This tale follows the two through the rousing exploits they face while working cases. Criticism from society, adventure, danger and humor abound, along with surprising revelations about their families.

The residents of the boarding house where Gabe lives make up the ragtag group of operatives working for her agency. They provide additional comic relief along with some mystery. Faith is part of this 5-star book. I recommend it to those who enjoy romance or period stories with a sprinkle of fun, along with a touch of cloak and dagger.

Bethany House Publishers, through NetGalley, has provided Tickmenot with a complimentary copy of, To Steal a Heart, for the purpose of review. I have not been compensated in any other manner. To Steal a Heart is true entertainment as only Jen Turano can provide! Part farce, part romantic comedy, the Gilded Age world comes alive with plenty of laughter and even a few swoons.

I need to start by talking about the supporting characters in this book – always important when you’re starting a new series because chances are that several of those secondary characters will become protagonists (or at least play a larger role) as the series progresses. And these delightfully quirky personalities definitely have me eager for more books! Daphne is hands down my favorite character – an eccentric writer with an unfortunate penchant for swooning and/or whipping out her notepad to work out a scene at the most inappropriate times (like when she’s supposed to be the lookout). But a more loyal friend you won’t find … unless it’s Phillip Villard or one of the other residents of Bleecker Street, including our heroine Gabriella.

The opening chapters are a hilarious introduction to Gabriella and her friends and the mayhem that is their dynamic. Not to mention the unexpected reunion with her long lost best friend and fellow former street thief (and our story’s hero) Nicholas. You’ll love Nicholas & Gabriella separately as individual characters but also as friends who have the potential to be so much more. Their chemistry is quite swoony (as is Nicholas) yet not without several hilarious moments as well. I really enjoyed how the author wrote their reconciliation with who they were in the past, who they are now – after everywhere life has taken them over the years – and who they aspire to be in the future. I also loved watching Nicholas pursue Gabriella with a patient intentionality and a tender twinkle in his eye, as though he knows a secret she isn’t yet privy to.

Bottom Line: To Steal a Heart is true entertainment as only Jen Turano can provide! Part farce, part romantic comedy, it brings the Gilded Age world to life with plenty of laughter and even a few swoons. You’ll run into some sweetly tender aspects to this story as well, along with a subtle-but-not-hidden faith message that is organic to these characters and their journeys. Perfect for fans of the author’s other books, P. G. Wodehouse & Georgette Heyer. Can’t wait for Daphne’s story next – To Write a Wrong releases August 2021 (and how am I to wait that long?!?)

(I voluntarily reviewed a copy of this book which I purchased for my own collection.)

To Steal a Heart by bestselling author Jen Turano is a Christian historical fiction that readers will enjoy. This is Book One in her new The Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency. I found it delightful.

I was invested in this quirky story from the beginning. There were many odd situations, strange conversations, and just crazy unruliness that I could not wait to see where this story was heading. This book is filled with humor, mystery, intrigue, adventure, and romance.

This is the story of an all woman detective agency set in New York City. What a great concept! The characters are fabulous. Immediately I loved this tale. Gabriella is a spunky lady. Nicholas is someone from her past. The tension between them pops off of the pages when they are reunited to work together.

I enjoy the writing style of this author. This plot was well thought and organized. The pace was even. It did not drag or hurry which made it easy to follow. There are so many layers to this story. It is entertaining and encouraging. Little life lessons are woven throughout it. The characters are all unique and worthy of their own stories.

I highly recommend this book. It is quite the page turner. I rated it 5 out of 5 stars. A copy was provided by Celebrate Lit, but these are my honest words.

To Steal A Heart by Jen Turano

Rating: 5 out of 5 stars

Story Notes

Jen Turano's latest story is a fantastic start for a new series that still has her trademark humor included but also has some more serious tones that other books have included.

Jen Turano is definitely one of my favorite authors with her ability to tell wonderful stories with sharp wit and subtle humor that make you wish each story was longer to keep reading. This series is going be be a good one if this story is any indication. The Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency is made up of ladies of varied talents who all reside at the same boardinghouse. Gabriella Goodhue is a young seamstress who has found herself in the middle of a case of thievery that involves her good friend Jennette Moore. Someone has framed Jennette for the theft of the famed Linwood Jewels in order to spoil her chances at a marriage to Duncan Linwood and Gabriella is going to prove it. But her quest is interrupted by a childhood friend turned wealthy gentleman, Nicholas Quinn. Nicholas cannot believe that he is seeing his best friend again after so many years. Too bad she doesn't want anything to do with him and his high society ways. But when he rescues Gabriella and her accomplice Daphne from two dangerous instances, she grudgingly agrees to renew their friendship. Very soon, Nicholas decides to ask Gabriella to help him sort through the society ladies to find a woman who would make a good wife. She has a keen eye for character and detail and would be the best help he could find in acquiring a spouse. But while Gabriella initially didn't like Nicholas and his high handed ways, she feels queasy about helping him find a wife. If both she and Nicholas can move beyond their prejudices and see each other for how they really are, they might have a chance at more than friendship. But first they have to find answers about who is targeting Gabriella to frame her with new thefts and keep her away from Nicholas. I loved the entirety of this story. The Characters were wonderfully crafted and excellently voiced. Each was distinct and so well written that you felt that you knew them personally by the end of the book. I also loved that there was a deeper story to be told and plenty of depth added with the search for Gabriella's family. This was certainly not a surface story and one that I will highly recommend to others as a really great read. I'm definitely looking forward to reading the next in the series and am very interested to see what happens to Daphne as she was a favorite from this story.

I received this temporary complimentary E-book from Bethany House Publishers via NetGalley in order to provide a fair and honest review. I will receive no fiscal compensation for this review and the opinions expressed herein are entirely my own.

I really enjoyed getting to know Gabriella Goodhue. She is a remarkably strong woman. She had a very difficult past that is presented throughout the book. I loved meeting her friends, most of whom are her fellow boarders at the boarding house on Bleeker Street.

It was fun getting to know Nicholas Quinn too. I was really amused to see the relationship between Gabriella and Nicholas as it went through many changes over the course of the story.

The cast of characters was large and the personalities were very different. There were a number of them with very different quirks that kept me entertained. The numerous antics came from the four legged characters as much as from the humans.

I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All of the opinions expressed are my own.

To Steal A Heart by Jen Turano is an exciting Christian historical novel that will certainly entertain the reader. It is the first book in The Bleaker Street Inquiry Agency series which promises to be fabulous.
The novel has some highly amusing scenes as we follow some very modern and forward thinking women in 1880’s New York. They are far from conventional as they disguise themselves to solve crimes. The reader is delighted by their antics.
A couple of pooches and a parrot with a fetish for shiny things all add to our entertainment.
The basis of the novel is from Genesis 50. What others meant for harm, God used for good. We may feel far from God at times but He is never far from us. He watches over our every movement protecting us from harm.
There is the theme of fathers. In God we have our perfect father. Even if our earthly fathers abandon us, our heavenly Father will never leave us nor forsake us. To Him, we are never an ‘inconvenience’. We are His and we are loved.
New York City in the nineteenth century was a city of two halves – the very wealthy and the very poor. Poor decisions were made by those driven by wealth and status. In contrast those with a heart for the poor and vulnerable were delightful to witness them opening their homes to those in need.
Guilt can cripple us. We need to confess our sins to God, receive His forgiveness and live in His freedom and love.
Jen Turano always writes such delightfully fun novels, even though she has serious themes. I always love her tales. I am entertained and amused. What better way to spend a gloomy autumnal afternoon than in the company of To Steal A Heart.
I received this book for free. A favourable review was not required and all views expressed are my own.

4.5 stars - I loved it! Would re-read.
This was so great! I loved the characters. The story is meaty - there's the inciting incident that brings the couple together and launches the Inquiry Agency. Then there are some additional cases as well as developments in the main characters' personal lives as well as in the potential romance. Faith pieces are subtle and fit naturally into the story. The pacing is terrific, and the whole book was engaging from start to finish. I hope that every single member of the Inquiry Agency is going to get a book because I am here for every last one!

What a fun and unique story! Former friends separated by circumstances beyond their control. And it’s got quite the twist! I love this authors humor in her books and the quirkiness of her characters. Even with that, there’s a beautiful message woven in the pages. I’m loving this new series and can’t wait to read more! I received a copy of this book from the publisher. Their past and present collide...

Have you ever started a book just knowing that it would be excellent and then discovered that it was even better than you had anticipated? That was To Steal A Heart for me, well, any Jen Turano book really, but this one in particular. I've been looking forward to the start of The Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency for months now and it more than lived up to my expectations!

As usual, I was into the story right away. How could I not when it pretty much started with a safecracking and a hysterically funny conversation meant to scare off a certain gentleman? Ahh, but then that's classic Jen Turano for you, fun and funny!

To Steal A Heart had a nice mystery thread running through it that I completely enjoyed. Can decades old secrets involve a current crime? And I also loved the way that the cases handled by the Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency were interwoven within the story.

The cast of characters in To Steal A Heart are so delightful! Especially the canine characters! I had to laugh out loud many times over the antics of the boardinghouse ladies, the kids, and the two crazy dogs. I was quite tickled to find out that one of my favorite characters will be the heroine Jen Turano's next Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency novel.

If you love historical romance or romantic or just want to spend a few laugh-out-loud hours, have I got the story for you! To Steal A Heart is witty and exquisite, the perfect start to a new series from the very talented Jen Turano.

Even if I didn’t already know this was a Jen Turano book, I’d know! Her inimitable style is delightful and unique. Her characters full of personality and gusto—not a dull one in the bunch.
I picked up on the My Fair, uh, Gentleman theme, and I’ve gotta say, I’ve not seen that done before. Brilliant, Ms. Turano, simply brilliant! And the conflict that Nicholas felt, [SPOILER]. OY!
Gabriella, headstrong and independent in an era before women’s rights, rises to the challenge every time. I love how she just jumps in and takes charge with her savvy mind and astute observations.
The colorful sidekicks—Daphne and Eunice and Elsy and Judith—add fun and flavor to the story like spices add zest to soup, and I can’t wait to see them in future stories in this new series.
Ms. Turano weaves some serious twists into her stories, and this one sure has plenty! Scenarios and resolutions that I totally did not see coming.

To Steal a Heart launches Jen Turano’s new series in an attention grabbing and highly entertaining manner. The action opens with lead character Gabriella preparing to break into a safe at the home of one of the New York Four Hundred. If you’ve ever read Jen Turano before, you can only imagine the hilarity that follows. The action never really stops after that, and a new crime fighting force is launched.

Readers, welcome to the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency.

Following the safe-cracking attempt, Gabriella runs right into Nicholas Quinn, her dearest friend. The two first bonded while sharing a rough childhood on the streets. Gabriella is now making ends meet as a seamstress, but Nicholas was taken in by a wealthy and influential man. He’s now viewed as the most eligible bachelor in New York.

As Gabriella tries to solve different cases, and danger stalks her, Nicholas can’t help being drawn back to his former best friend, feeling she’s the only person in the city to truly know him. But Gabriella isn’t interested in harming his standing in society, or bowing to its demands.

In summary, I highly recommend To Steal a Heart. This book will amuse, provoke thought and (if you’re like me) make you cheer out loud. Another winner from one of my favorite authors.

Jen Turano is back with a brand new series, full of mystery, romance, and hilarious miscommunication!

When Gabriella's friend is falsely accused of a crime, she and her fellow boardinghouse members band together to clear the name of their friend. While on the case she comes face to face with a man that she never thought she'd see again, Nicholas Quinn, once an orphan like her who was adopted by a wealthy professor, and is now part of the dream of society. As they are thrown together in one case after another, their re-established friendship is tested, but could it be more?

A fast-paced, fun-filled read, with a full cast of colorful characters and lively interactions. The excellent pacing and great interaction between the characters, interlaced with hilarious misadventures keep the story from feeling episodic. I loved how the ladies of the boarding house all worked together, each bringing their own special skill set to the table, and I can't wait to get to know them better in future books!

Overall, a delightful, and highly entertaining read. I didn't want to put this book down. This books is not for people who take themselves too seriously, as it is just too much fun. Excellent start to what is sure to be a fantastic series!

What a fantastic book! ❤

It is always a good day when there’s a Jen Turano book to read. But she outdid herself with this one!

There’s a touch of mystery, a nod to Oliver Twist, and friendships that become stronger with each page. Full of the humor Turano is known for, but also a note of seriousness that brings inteligence and depth to the characters.

I’m so looking forward to the next book in the series!

The criminals better watch out, there's a new detective agency in town and these women aren't playing around!

Jen Turano has started a new series called the Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency, and this is her best yet. Set in New York City in the late 1880's, Turano pulls together high society and the every day working class to create mystery, tension, and romance in a way that has the reader on the edge of her seat. I love Jen's books for a lot of reasons -- her research into the time period is amazing, her characters are multi-faceted and realistic, the dialogue she creates leaves you breathless, and she brings a unique sense of comedy to every scene.

Each time I read her books I have a hard time putting them down. She has a brilliant way of drawing the reader in and ending each chapter in such a way that you have to read 'just one more'. I love cheering the characters on as they, with the best of intentions, get themselves into hysterical situations that only make them more endearing.

There are so many intriguing women living in the boarding house on Bleecker Street that I can't wait for the remaining books in the series. I really want to learn more about each one!

To Steal a Heart is set in New York City in 1886. Gabriella Goodhue is on a mission, of sorts, to clear her friend who has been accused of a theft. While attempting to do this she is unexpectedly reunited with her former best friend, Nicholas Quinn who she thought had abandoned her years ago. They shared a common past. They had been street thieves as children. Can their friendship resume? Not likely as Gabriella resides in a boarding house and Nicholas has become a member of New York's elite society.

What follows is an absolutely delightful story populated with a quirky and memorable cast of characters. The dialogue is witty and often funny. The multilayered plot is packed with adventures, humor and surprises. This book is well worth reading! Highly recommended.

To Steal a Heart by Jen Turano is a delightful historical fiction story. Set in the 1880’s in New York City,
this book looks at class discrimination and repercussions of choices made. The upper class seemed to
spend their time and energy trying to outdo each other. Bigger houses, better locations, whom you
associated with and who you married. The lower class seemed to enjoy life and be happy with what they
had.
The two main characters grew up together in the rough part of town. Separated for years, they
rediscover each other when they are each called to solve a mystery. Once best friends they are now
separated by class and vocation. Can they find their way back to each other and overcome the class
differences? Jen Turano pens a lovely story with deep characters, wonderful plot twists and great
storytelling. Mystery, suspense, romance and faith are all part of this wonderful story. Worth the read.

To Steal a Heart is book one in The Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency series by Jen Turano.

Summary: Gabriella Goodhue is determined to help a friend unjustly accused of stealing a collection of priceless gems. And if that means relying on the street smarts she learned as a child, then so be it.

But there is more to this crime than meets the eye. Valuables have been going missing throughout the city. Who could be behind these mysterious thefts, and can she find the real culprit in time to save her friend?

My Thoughts: I really like Jen Turano’s books. They are always filled with extremely quirky characters and high-jinx galore. This book is no exception. I enjoyed the storyline, the crazy characters, and the light-hearted romance as well.

This was a quick, fun read-perfect for when you just want to enjoy a book and not think too hard about it.

I am looking forward to reading more from this series. I love the characters, and can’t wait to read more about them!

I would like to thank Bethany House Publishers for providing me with a free digital copy of this book in exchange for my review. Thank you!

To Steal a Heart by Jen Turano is the first book in her new Bleaker Street Inquiry Agency series. Gabriella Goodhue’s childhood was spent as a street thief until her arrest sent her to an orphanage. Determined to put that past behind her, she reluctantly recalls her skills when a friend is in need of a little breaking and entering.

Nicholas Quinn was Gabriella’s best friend until she was taken from him that fateful arrest day. He never forgot her, even though his lot in life was changed when he was sent to live with a professor who taught him to be a gentlemen. Their paths unexpectedly cross while Gabriella is attempting to crack open a safe.

The story is off and running from there, with many a twist and turn and lighthearted mishap. It’s one of the aspects of Jen Turano’s writing that I greatly enjoy – her ability to take characters with difficult pasts and put them in humorous situations.

Gabriella and Nicholas are especially well-paired and it is no wonder they were childhood best friends. Personally, their type of characters are ones I especially enjoy reading about, too. The supporting cast threatens to steal the show, but Gabriella and Nicholas are too strong to let that happen.

If you’re looking for a lighthearted read with quirky characters that also touches on deep topics like poverty, wealth, and crime, definitely pick up a copy of To Steal a Heart. It might steal your heart, too.

This book was fantastic!

I've come to expect quirky characters and their funny escapades from Jen Turano books. This book exceeded all of my expectations and kept me thoroughly amused the entire time.

Gabriella and the other ladies of the Bleeker Street Boarding House tickle me.

I can picture Gabriella, dressed up as a man. I can see her trying to blend in at a high society function so she can sneak up the stairs to find the safe. Hard to believe that a proper lady living in a boarding house with other single ladies once used to be a safe cracker.
But if anyone can pull off a plot like that, it is Jen Turano.

This book is funny, suspenseful with a little romance thrown in.

So if any of these genres appeal to you, I think you'll like this book

This is a fun read. The plot is fast paced and has a lot going on - maybe a bit too much at times? But even with all of action, everything seems to get resolved in the end.

This was a lovely and unique historical romance. I found myself smiling at several points while I read and was genuinely surprised by the ending. Will keep an eye out for more from this author!

This is book one of The Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency Series. Just when Gabriella had her life back on track and thought her past was in the past, a friend is accused of theft and she can stand by and let them be falsely accused. She unexpectedly meets her old friend Nicholas, a thief from her past, and a friend talks him into helping Gabriella prove the innocents of her friend. When they start to work on proving that her friend was not part of the theft, Nicholas and Gabriella come to terms with the past and find much more than they thought they would find.
I would recommend this book to those that want a fun, light romance, light mystery read. This book is a feel good, read to the end. One of those books that could make it as a Hallmark Movie & Mystery channel movie. I really like this author and her books are always very entertaining from beginning to end.

What a fun group of characters! The banter between Gabriella and Daphne was pure comic gold, and had me chuckling out loud several times. I enjoyed the storyline, and all of the characters really came to life for me. I frequently felt like I was in the middle of their conversations - which were frequently very amusing. The middle part of the book kind of dragged on a bit, but it didn't take too long before the pace picked up again and I found myself not wanting to put the book down. I hope that some of the other characters will get their own stories.

Loved! Loved this book! I found this book to be just the escape I needed. Nicholas and Gabriella's relationship was so fun to watch as well. Some of the situations they got into was hilarious. I could picture them clearly. Gabriella is full of determination and spunk. She grew up on the streets but didn't let that keep her from becoming the person she was and improving her situation. I like how the story comes full circle and Gabriella discovers the true facts of her past.
Each of the ladies from the boarding bouse added their unique personality to the story. I liked them all and wish they were real. The mystery of the Knickerbocker bandit added to the story. It wasn't just a romance.
I listened this book as an audiobook. I found that the narrator did an great job bringing this story to life. Every once in awhile it was a little difficult to determine who was speaking but overall it was good. I have read other books by Jen Turano and knew they were fun and clean and just a wonderful story. So I had no hesitation listening to part of this story with my boys in the car. I didn't expect them to be interested but they were. So much that my older son asked me if we could keep listening to mom's book the next day. He was worried I had listened to it without them. Both of my boys said it was interesting to them. A little intense but good. One thing they liked was the dogs in the story.
I found this story to be the perfect escape to another time and place. I'm looking forward to reading more books by her.

I recommend this book to my family and friends.

I voluntarily reviewed a complimentary copy of this book which I received from the publisher. I purchased the audio book for my own library. All views expressed are only my honest opinion.

I absolutely loved this story! It had all
the comedy you expect to find in one of Jen’s books and a couple that I adored. I’m excited to see the rest of this series because all the side characters were delightful as well.

An amazing book from Jen Turano. Can be read as a stand-alone. This is a historical Christian fiction book

I was so excited to read this book! Jen Turano is one of my favorite authors, and she did not disappoint with To Steal a Heart. I absolutely fell in love with all of the characters-Gabriella, Nicholas, Daphne, Eunice, Monsieur Villard...each one of them were unique and fun and made the book entertaining.

What I especially love about Jen Turano's novels is how funny they are. And this book was no different. Gabriella, Nicholas, Daphne, Eunice, and Monsieur Villard always seem to end up in these humorous (and dangerous) situations.

I love Nicholas. He is such a gentleman. And he clearly cares for Gabriella. He has such a good, Christian heart. He tries his best, being in high society, to help those who were in the Lower East side, thieving to survive. But what I think I like about him most is the fact that he has a dog. A dog named Winston, to be exact, who wears an eye patch and loves to be spoken to in a pirate voice.

Gabriella is stubborn and proves time and again that she is a capable woman, especially after living out on the streets. She starts her investigation business when a friend is falsely accused of stealing. This catches the attention of society, and she and the entire boardinghouse she lives in becomes The Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency.

My absolute favorite character out of all of them, though, was Daphne. Also part of The Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency, she doesn't fare well in stressful situations. She tends to faint when nervous and always carries smelling salts with her. She also carries a notebook with her to write down "poems"-or, rather, book ideas since she is actually an author. But since at that time female authors were not popular, she wrote under an assumed male name.

Other characters such as Monsieur Villard and Eunice did certainly make the book that much more enjoyable. Not only that, but I also like the author's writing style. It's fast paced. And I like the humor in her stories. It definitely makes it a light read. But don't be fooled-there are some serious moments in the book, such as Gabriella's journey to find out who her parents are. And also the issues of high society, and the divide between them and the poor. When I started getting into Gilded Age fiction, I often wondered how those in the New York Four Hundred treated those less fortunate than themselves. I'm sure some were kind, but, as shown in To Steal a Heart, some were also snobby and looked down on others.

Overall, I would highly recommend this book. I have no complaints and it's definitely one of my favorites. I would definitely give it five out of five stars.

I received a complimentary copy of the book and this is my honest opinion.

To Steal a Heart by Jen Turano is the first book in the Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency. Gabriella Goodhue grew up on the streets. As she entered adulthood, she left that life behind and became a member of the working class. When a fellow boarder is accused of theft, Gabriella decides to investigate by locating the missing items by breaking into safes of possible suspects which she learned to do in her past life. While breaking in, she runs into Nicholas Quinn, a childhood friend who is now passing as a societal gentleman, and together they join forces to discover who is behind the thefts. Turano has once again created a Gilded Age mystery filled with romance, comedy, memorable characters, and snappy dialogue.

Whenever I see there’s a new book by Jen Turano, my first reaction is to smile. I know I’ll want a stretch of undisturbed time to read the book, because I’ll quickly be absorbed in the story. If the rest of the books in this new series, “The Bleeker Street Inquiry Agency” are as much fun and entertaining as this first book is, there’s great reading ahead.

The opening chapter of this book is SO much fun. I immediately loved the two main characters, Gabriella and Nicholas. Both were accomplished thieves in their childhood, but circumstances separated them at an early age. As adults, they use their “talents” developed in childhood only for legitimate investigative purposes. Although neither is aware of it, they attend the same society party with the same goal—to clear a client’s/friend’s name and prove that she was set up to appear to have stolen some jewels. When they unexpectedly run into each other for the first time in many years, the fireworks begin. The fun in this chapter sets the tone for the rest of the book. The action in the story moves quickly, and by the end of the book, I was cheering for Gabriella and Nicholas to work through almost impossible situations to find their happily-ever-after.

There’s another quirky character in this book, Daphne, who also added some great comedy to the story. I’m hoping she gets her own book in this series.

This book also has an inspirational theme: God defines who you truly are, not your past or your present circumstances. This is a clean, sweet book that was a pleasure to read.

I am a huge Jen Turano fan, but this one really blew me away! I think it is her best book yet. I have always loved the quirkiness of her books and that they often make me laugh out loud while being historically accurate and having Christian themes. It has never bothered me that they were light reads. But this one had a depth that pleasantly surprised me. I was amazed how she kept the light, fun, and quirky feel while exploring some really deep themes and emotions. I absolutely loved it! I am so looking forward to more like this from her!

In the middle of breaking into a safe that holds the proof to prove her friend's innocence, Gabriella is interrupted by Nicholas Quinn, the man she once considered her best friend until he abandoned her.

Nicholas Quinn was living far removed from his childhood life of crime after he was taken under the wing of a professor who introduced him into society and named him as heir.

Another darling story by Jen Turano! The characters are a lot of fun, and the humor is just what I needed after the crazy year that was 2020. This is wonderful novel to pick up!

You are always in for a good laugh with Jen Turano, but I believe this is my favorite book by her this far!!
With the undercover work these ladies had me going for a wild ride with all their disguises and quick banter.

I ALWAYS love a Jen Turano book. If you ever need to relax, just let go and get lost in a book, choose one of her stories. This is another hilarious, heart touching Jen Turano hit. Set in the late 1800s New York City, orphaned street thieves grow up and meet again to use their special talents. With chaos. And some deep hurt feelings. Twisting, turning storylines that come from several places and gracefully wind together. Genius. Characters you have to love. It will steal your heart!

I so enjoyed this book. Gabriella and Nicholas were just great characters. I loved their friendship and romantic tension (though, they didn't want to acknowledge it!). They were such good friends to start with, that I was rooting for the transformation into more with relative ease for them.

I liked this book as the start of a new series. There was some set up and a new cast of characters that I hope to get to know more about in future books. It's a great concept of a series though and I cannot wait to see where the author takes the agency. Great characters and a good plot made this one I didn't want to put down.

It was a 4/5.

As always Jen Turano made me laugh and get involved in a story that went by much too quickly. This book had absolutely everything I love in a book-great characters, humor, and a little bit of mystery/adventure. I can't wait for the next one in the series!

The first chapter of To Steal a Heart had me laughing out loud and the fun continued as young women in a New York City boarding house set out to prove the innocence of a friend accused of theft. After police consider the case solved, Gabriella, Daphne, and Eunice become wanna-be detectives and they're soon aided by a man who was Gabriella's childhood friend. Suddenly, another intriguing element is added to the picture, as Gabriella and Nicholas recall the special bond they shared as children and experience a rekindling of their affection for each other. The story that follows has a mixture of unusual characters, dangerous activities, heartwarming discoveries, and the promise of sweet romance.

When I see that Jen Turano has written a new book, I immediately associate it with fun and laughter and this book certainly met my expectations. This is the first book in The Bleecker Street Inquiry Agency and I look forward to seeing what's ahead for these quirky women detectives. I highly recommend To Steal a Heart to all who enjoy historical romantic fiction.
