The author of this book is such an advocate for the benefits of having houseplants. In her casual style, she includes a great deal of information for those who want to add some green to their indoor spaces. She genuinely believes that doing this will add happiness to lives. I think that she is right.
Following the introduction, readers will find photos and information on many houseplants, projects and more. For example there are the Heart-Leaf Rhododendron and the Candelabra Aloe. The plants are organized by groups. I especially liked that there was one of plants that are pet friendly.
I currently have an octet of houseplants. I loved being able to nurture something and watch it grow while I was coping with our covid world. If you would like to add some plants to your home, give this title a look. It will be worth your while.
Many thanks to NetGalley and the publisher. All opinions are my own.
I recently moved in a new apartment and I’m at the ‘decoration’ stage, so this book was perfect for me!
I don’t have a green thumb and i always feel overwhelmed when i look up plants’ care online.
This book explains very clearly how to take care of some specific (and absolutely beautiful) plants. It also shares benefits, decorations you can make and even some drinks you can make from your plants!
If you are looking for an ‘easy to care’ plant you should definitely pick up this book!
Like a lot of people during lockdown my collection of houseplants grew to a whole family of them and I collected quite a few books about them along the way.
Hi Cacti is definitely a standout to other books I have picked up. With lots of useful information, it is straight to the point and informative whilst also providing illustration's to assist. It will be a book you come back and reference to for all things house plants and a good all rounder. I also enjoyed the different chapters with more of a creative side - Plant Shelfies, food and drink recipes, crafts and even lotions and potions.
I will be picking up a copy of this to keep in my collection and definitely would purchase for friends who also have a love for plants.
Disclosure: Thank you to NetGalley for the opportunity to read this in exchange for an honest review.
A cute plant book with easy care instructions for beginners and excellent photos. Also includes great recipes and crafts!
As a person who loves houseplants but still has a black thumb, this book is definitely going to come in handy!
I received a copy of this book through NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This is a cute book that was around 3.5 stars for me!
Palermo breaks down how plant care is self care and the importance of connecting with nature. The book is full of inspirational quotes about nature and the outdoors as well. I appreciate that Palermo lists common house plants and provides information about them, noting that the house plants that are best for you depend on your indoor climate and what you're looking for in plants. Palermo also shares her experiences with house plants and how they fit into her life.
It's a cute read about plants and incorporating them into your life.
Pros: I've requested many books from Quarto Publishing Group on NetGalley because the covers are so bright and cheerful. Until now, all of the books have been children's books, so I was thrilled to see a book for adults. My friends and I could be categorized as plant ladies, so I especially enjoyed reading this book and learning about new-to-me types of house plants. I am a big believer that houseplants positively impact the home, and I loved how the author put this idea into words in this book. There is also a lot of great practical advice in this book for caring for houseplants and finding the right houseplants for your space. I wasn't expecting the sections on plant projects or plant eats and drinks, so those were fun bonuses to come upon when reading.
Cons: Some might find parts of this book a little too woo-woo (I don't see myself singing to my plants), but for the right readers, this will be the right book.
Thank you to NetGalley and Quarto Publishing Group - Ivy Press, Leaping Hare Press for the opportunity to read this book!
If you have the Black Thumb of Death like me, this book is exactly what you need. Hi Cacti offers not only a long list of beginner-friendly plants, but also tips for pet-owners and suggestions for how to create and stick to a plant-care routine, delicious-looking cactus recipes, instructions for making your own macrame plant pot holders and much more. Throughout the book, Sabina Palermo really drives home the idea that caring for plants is not something that is or should be stressful and frustrating but rather a spiritually enriching, meditative, joy-inducing experience and one that can be shared with friends and family.
As someone who's killed 99% of all the plants she's ever owned, simple advice like that for watering and light needs or hacks to make use of if you overwater or have pests will come in very handy.
Needless to say, I've written down a list and I'm getting some new plants ASAP. (I will, however, try not to rush and start making my own concrete pots and macrame plant pot holder just yet.)
Huge thank you to NetGalley, Sabina Palermo and Quarto Publishing Group – Ivy Press for the advanced reader copy.
I would like to thank the author, the publisher, and NetGalley for providing me with a copy of this eBook.
As an aspiring gardener, Hi Cacti by Sabrina Palermo was such a wonderfully detailed book on indoor plants. I wholeheartedly agree with the author's views on the benefits of plants and the mindfulness that gardening brings along. The illustrations were nicely done and this would make a wonderful gift to someone looking for a new hobby. Hopefully, I will be successful with String of Pearls this time around.
3 1/2 stars
Sabina Palermo’s Hi Cacti has a lot of great information in it, from easy to grow plants to which pots to use. Many of the plants are the same house plants I recommend to families for better air quality. If you think the book is about cacti based on the title, you would be wrong. I, myself, was disappointed to find out that the book is named after the author’s store and not tips for growing cacti. And, while the book does have a lot of scientific information and artistic flare, it also lends itself to some woo practices that were a bit of a turn off for me. There isn’t any new information in the book, and it seems almost like marketing material for the store, but if you have no knowledge base whatsoever about plants, this does have information to get your started.

This is a very useful book for anyone trying (and failing) to keep a cactus or succulent alive. It gives practical tips and advice on how best to make use of your living space, where to put the plants, how to take care of them. This book also focuses on the benefits of having a plant, on how this can improve both your mental and physical wellbeing. I loved leafing through this book trying to see what I could to to improve the lives of my roommates (mostly succultenst, and one cactus). I also appreciated that all most of the photos that show succulents(/cacti actually give their names as well! That can be a bit difficult to find out sometimes.
To finish off - go buy this book if you are interested in having a gorgeous plant in your life.
I enjoyed this book. The author did an excellent job describing common household plants, providing the history and attributes, I thought she offered some creative tips such as plant meditation, recipes and crafts,
The author did an excellent job providing detailed descriptions of the plants virtues, Feng shui depictions as well as watering, tips and tricks.
Thank you Leaping Hare Press and Netgalley for the opportunity to review this delightful book!
3.5 stars
The book is fun and has lots of info and photos. It covers the benefits of plants and using them as part of self-care. Chapters are Easy-Care Houseplants, Plant Hacks & Knacks, Plant Projects, Plant Eats & Drinks, and Plant Design. I wish the easy care plant chapter covered more - the info is great but it only features about 20 plants. Less than half of them are cacti or even succulents, so the book title is cute but a little misleading. The plant projects chapter is mostly about growing or ways to turn plants into decor. Plant eats and drinks focuses mostly on cacti. Overall, it's got a lot of positive messaging and good introductory plant info for plants that are pretty readily available.
Not only is this an absolutely stunning book that would add a touch of style to any given coffee table, the content really doesn't disappoint either! Bringing the outdoor inside seems bang on trend at the moment, and this book really embraces this. 'Hi Cacti' shows how to do plants, a book that will appeal to, but is not restricted to, those of us who fear we may be utterly incapable of keeping a plant alive!
Not only does this book steer us in the right direction of which plants are easiest to care for, it fully briefs us on how to care for them including how to deal with pests and how to keep plants alive when you are away from home.
I particularly like how contemporary and stylish this book is, as are all the plant / plant pots features. It is both inspiring and and practical. Truly a lesson in self care / nurture, even featuring medication that we can do with our plants! Lovely!
My thanks to NetGalley, author and publisher for the opportunity to review this book in exchange for an advance copy
This book was so well designed for newbies like me. Starting a plant journey can be intimitadating with all the things you need to learn but this one was laid out easily and calmly. Lots of great places for me to start.
This is really a lovely guide for the amateur or beginner plant parent. The plants that the author goes over are all fairly good plants to add into your home as a burgeoning green-thumb and the advice and instructions included are all very helpful and easy to follow. The book also goes over essentials like how to pot your plants, what tools to use and proper care etc. This is a great guide to keeping and caring for house plants and all the beautiful illustrations really add to the learning/ reading experience. I really like this book and find it a great companion to caring for my household plants. I read the e-book copy of this book but I'll be sure to pick up the hardcopy to keep handy for daily use!
Good introduction to plant care. Would have liked to have seen more cacti as the title suggests but certainly covers a range of information including pot types, recipes, display and many others. Easy to find information in the book as well.
Wonderful colourful book, easy to read and written with a lot of fun in mind. Information is great and there is no length explanations - photos tell the story with concise and to the point plant care.
The book is breeze and I really like the writing style and format. Great book.
Do you end up with dead houseplants? Houseplants have different requirements when it come to taking care of them. The author has picked out her 20 houseplants that are easier to care for. She also explains what each plant needs. Her explanations are easy to understand. The pictures of the plants show you what the plant looks like.
