Description
A PureWow Best Beach Read of 2022
A frisky, feminine, funny, and profoundly genuine essay collection on relationships, sex, motherhood, and finding yourself, by the editor of New York magazine's "Sex Diaries."
Alyssa Shelasky has a lot to tell you.
In this hilarious and intimate essay collection, Alyssa navigates life as a wild-hearted woman and her thrilling career as a sex, relationship, and celebrity writer in New York City. From running away from the “perfect” future husband(s), to interviewing A-list stars while contemplating an abortion, to bypassing men entirely to have a baby with an anonymous sperm donor, to partnering up with a sexy enigma while extremely pregnant and eventually finding a soulmate whom she swears she’ll never marry, Alyssa’s essays paint a deeply genuine, romantic, and uproarious portrait of a woman who lives by her own paradigm of love and lust, and who refuses to settle or sacrifice her fierce inner-spirit, sometimes to her own regret and detriment. Through her stories, confessions, and columns, she shares all the beautiful, embarrassing, and emotional details of her bleeding heart and busy bedroom.
This Might Be Too Personal is like having (several) drinks with your best friend who has seen, heard, and done everything. Literally, everything. Told with a refreshing candor with jolts of humor, comforting relatability, and irresistible energy, Alyssa’s book is the ultimate meditation on living an authentic life with big feelings, hard decisions, and the small victories and painful mistakes of motherhood, womanhood, and profound independence.

I loved everything about this memoir! 5 stars! I was intrigued by this book's cover and was given the wonderful surprise of reading the story of a woman who made me laugh, inspired me and got me right in the feels. I immediately want more from Alyssa Shelasky!
Any author who drags Jake Gyllenhaal is my type of author! Alyssa was so raw, authentic, and relatable. At so many points during this book, I actually laughed out loud.
As a dating, celebrity, and entertainment writer, Alyssa has some great celeb stories in here and her charisma and wit make this such an enjoyable read. One of my favorite lines in the book was when she talks about what it's like having a friend who has better material than you - which is hard to believe with some of Alyssa's stories!
The book does talk a bit about fertility and uterine problems, etc., so sharing that TW for those this may impact. Alyssa does eventually have a baby on her own (without a life partner) and talks about single motherhood. And then she meets her current partner and has another kid. Another TW is sexual assault, drug overdose and more.
Overall really funny, solid book but there are just some TW to keep in mind for readers!
This was a great read! I very much enjoyed her perspective. I had not read this offer prior to this book, but I wouldn't hesitate to seek out her work now. This is a great book for working women or women wanting to better themselves. I would definitely recommend this to a friend.
A touching memoir and collection of stories making up Alyssa Shelasky’s life. Alyssa has a way of writing to make the reader feel that they are a few drinks in, hearing all of the raunchy and soul-crushing stories you only share with your closest friends. I laughed, I cried (thank you to the surprise Avett Brothers reference), my inner woman and mother aches for her, I felt the second-hand embarrassment. What a touching collection of stories leading us to present day. I’ve ended the book feeling like Alyssa is a close friend and she is gifted in making readers connect with everything she says.
I found this book humorous and enjoyable but ultimately reveals a really personal journey that is delightful to read. It's an emotional experience.
This was like chatting with your best friend and can be beat enjoyed with a cup of tea or coffee! I thoroughly enjoyed my time with this book and would recommend it to my female friends who are looking to read a fun memoir for Nonfiction November!
Thank you #Netgalley for the advanced copy of this fun read.
This collection of essays was funny, sad, and a whole bucket full of emotions. Alyssa shares her relationship struggles and successes, her pursuit to be a mother in they way she saw fit and then how to date with a child as a single parent. I appreciated her honesty when discussing relationships that didn't work out or how her career had its struggles. But her ultimate joy and accomplishment is her daughter, and eventually the family she created in her own way. I felt hope in her journey, never give up and pursue what you want, not what society expects.
This Might Be Too Personal by Alyssa Shelasky was delightful and fun! Her writing style makes you feel like you’ve been best friends for years! Her stories were surprising and unexpectedly insightful. Would not recommend to your southern mom, grandma or aunt unless they happen to be way cooler than mine.
