Description

When a handsome handyman faces a medical emergency on the Appalachian trail, his sudden appearance in town challenges an ambitious doctor’s plan to remain single for life.

Avery Robinson decided to be a physician after helplessly watching her mother lose a battle with a terrible disease. Now at risk of developing the same illness, Avery guards her heart from love. She’s driven to protect her loved ones as a workaholic doctor in the tiny mountain town of Riverbend Gap, North Carolina.

Contractor Wes Garrett is hiking the Appalachian trail, in memory of the man who died saving his life, when an illness racks his body. After an agonizing fifteen-mile hike to Avery’s clinic, he collapses on her doorstep. He recovers to find himself in debt again—but this time to a beautiful doctor.

When he decides to help her renovate a rundown carriage house, the obstacles to their attraction sprout like weeds—starting with the woman waiting for Wes at the end of the trail. Will he be able to relinquish the debt he owes his best friend? And will Avery find the courage to risk everything for love?

This second book in Denise Hunter’s popular Riverbend Romance series explores what it might be like to live fearlessly and free.

I always know I’m in good hands when I pick up a book by Denise Hunter. She’s one of my most trusted romance authors and I continually adore her books. Her writing is a notch above and I always get lost in her stories. I’m so happy to say that Mulberry Hollow was once again another fantastic romance read by Hunter and oh, how delightful it was to be back in Riverbend Gap!

The characters here were so wonderful and I loved coming alongside them. I so appreciate when characters are real, relatable, and well-developed, and that’s precisely what we get here in Wes and Avery. Romance stories can sometimes have cheesy, over the top characters, and I’m not saying that’s always bad, but I like it when I can actually imagine myself in the characters shoes and connect with them on a deeper level. So, all that to say, the MC’s were a total highlight of this book and I was sad to part with them at the end.

Another highlight here is the picturesque descriptions of the setting. I truly got lost in the pages and felt as if I were transported right to this lovely mountain town of Riverbend Gap.

Lastly, the romance here was swoon-worthy, clean, and lovely to come alongside. A story do love, family, overcoming obstacles, and sincerity, this whole story was wholesome, heartfelt, and meaningful and checked all of the boxes for what makes a great romance read.

If you’re looking for a feel-good, easy read to escape with, I would highly recommend Mulberry Hollow!

Many thanks to NetGalley and Thomas Nelson for the gifted e-copy!

MULBERRY HOLLOW is the second novel in the Riverbend Romance series by DENISE HUNTER, but it can easily be read as a stand alone.
Avery, the only daughter in the Robinson family, suffers from guilt that she was unable to save her mother from dying. She has become a workaholic doctor, looking after all the residents of Riverbend Gap. Her clinic and her family have become her whole world. So afraid of testing positive to the horrible disease that destroyed her mother, she decides to never get married and never have children. It is particularly hard for her to see her best friend Katie and her brother Connor’s loving relationship.
Arriving home after her thirtieth birthday celebrations, she finds a disheveled man passed out on her doorstep. I like her compassion and courage as she helps him inside and treats him for severe dehydeation and a raging temperature.
Wes Garrett suffers from guilt due to the selfless action of his best friend Landon who died saving Wes’s life. This leads him to complete the trail that was on Landon’s bucket list and also to honour his promise to take care of his sister Lillian, who he has never met.
Because of his father’s unscrupulous behaviour, Wes makes it a point to always pay his debts. Being a building contractor, he offers to pay Avery by renovating a cottage on her property.
I found myself hoping that he would realise that you cannot pay someone back for saving your life and that your only responsibility is to live that life to the full.
I really enjoyed the book for the gentle romance, unforgettable characters and subtle Christian message. I highly recommend Mulberry Hollow and am looking forward to the next novel in the series.
I was given a free copy of the book by NetGalley from Thomas Nelson. The opinions in this review are completely my own.
