Kai is a warrior!  And as a warrior, Kai has a code to live by and share with others.  This is the warrior’s code: to be peaceful, to be kind of heart, and to respect all living things.

An empowering “code of conduct” book that teaches kids age 4-8 that bravery and courage mean treating others with kindness, standing up for what’s right, and demonstrating peace and self-respect.

Inspired by the classic spiritual text, Shambhala: Sacred Path of the Warrior, this uplifting story for children will build self-esteem, cultivate kindness, and instill values of compassion, nonviolence, and honoring.  Written by a 7th degree Kajukenbo black belt, The Warrior’s Code distills the ethics of traditional martial arts into a simple and clear message that kids can memorize, embody, and understand.  Kids who follow the code of the warrior can become more mindful, resilient, and confident.

I love the message in this for kids! My kiddo is on the younger end of the recommended age and she had a little bit of trouble engaging with the narrative and pictures. Might be better for slightly older kids. Even so, I love filling our library with books like this that promote such a positive message and inclusivity. Thank you to Kate Hobbs, Shambhala Publications, and NetGalley for free access to this e-arc in exchange for an honest review.

The Warrior’s Code is a story about a young girl named Kai, who has a strong code that she lives by every day. She explains her code and how a warrior should be skilled in body and kind on heart. She explains that her code includes Love, Respect, Care, Responsibility, Honor, and Peace. There are also many colorful illustrations to accompany the code to show how to put these beliefs into practice. The illustrations also serve as discussion starters so that children can talk about what they see and how it fits with the warrior cause. I also like that the people depicted in the illustrations provided diversity. It was a short sweet story book which would be excellent to read aloud to elementary students. It would also make a good addition for a social skills lesson. I will be adding it to my classroom library.

A colorful walk through what it means to be a good person. Our narrator, Kai, walks us through the elements of character that make us all stronger together. Images help younger kids better grasp the concepts discussed succinctly in the text. A heart-felt dedication to the people who inspired this book is just as inspiring a read as the book itself. A great spring-point for discussion with children on what it means to be a good person and how to be the best you and help others.

My 7 year old and I read this book together. Kai's story in using her warrior code is so cute and relatable for a little girl who does martial arts. My 7 year old said that she wished she could read more stories about kai.

Kai shares how she lives by her warrior code. A lovely picture book with bright and colorful images. This will make an excellent addition to any home or classroom library. Truthfully we should all follow Kai's code because it is the basis on how to be a beautiful human.
