Description
Chicago 1922 — Chicago Tribune reporter, Garland Hopkins, is a high-ender from his brown derby down to his cap-toe Oxfords. Besides being wealthy, he's clever as a fox covering the news, but he has a weakness, the wicked women and jazz down on The Stroll, South State Street's famous strip of clubs.
Esther Allen is exactly that. A caramel-skinned, mixed-race beauty, who works The Stroll as a gossip girl and legman reporter for a jazz news weekly, she's all guile and guts. And she wants more. When Esther smiles and purrs at Garland to learn his next move, she ends up in the dangerous tenements of gangster-controlled Little Italy. Esther's in the wrong place at the wrong time. Esther's gone.
A fire-haired Scottish woman and speakeasy owner who'd bite the horns off Lucifer himself, an impossibly brilliant secretary and a flat-faced ex-cop help Garland go up against Little Italy's ruthless criminals, flesh-peddlers and traffickers in a race against time.
Nothing and no one is quite as it seems in Chicago's Little Italy
Advance Praise
"""An irresistible, lurid crime novel that brings Prohibition-era Chicago to life, 100 years later. Her Terrible Mistake is a masterful work by this lifelong Chicago writer, filled with poignant moments and indelible characters.""--David Aretha, Wilbur-award-winning author
""What I loved most about this book was its characterization. I loved that there were different shades of each character. The storyline is full of suspense and heightens the tension of the reader. At some points, my heart was beating fast, pending the occurrence of some events."" Onlinebookclub "

This was a really good read, several twists and turns to keep me wanting more and I was totally wanting to know what happened next!!! Great book.. ..
First of all, thank you NetGalley for the opportunity to read this book.
The book is set in 1922 America, the year it is set would normally put me off a book, as I would find it hard reading, not enjoyable, but how wrong was I??!!
Garland is the main character and he fights for what he believes in and what he feels is right. Garland or Gar for short is from a wealthy background, but befriends a "coloured" girl, which is acceptable in that day and age, obviously not nowadays. Esther is the mixed race beauty, who doesn't necessarily have the same morals as Gar at first, she comes through very quickly and is also a great character. Although there is another character, Cornelius who I would love to have met in real life!!!
Thank you to Mike Kerr for a truly enjoyable read, that has broaden my reading horizons.
A great book. The characters are well developed and believable. The twists and turns in the book keep your attention and keep you guessing until the end. Looking forward to the next book he writes!
In 1922 Chicago is not an easy place especially for a couple who is not supposed to be together tbt societies standards. The mix of historical facts and situations and fiction made the story even more engaging and interesting. As these characters fight against societal norms and expectations it is hard not to pull for them and hope they realize all their hopes and dreams!
