Description
As arable farmland grows scarce, the United States opens up former sections of Indian Territory for homesteading. Those who want to claim land must make a run for it.
After seeing her mother die in childbirth, Rosabelle Ardmore decides to become a doctor. Her self-funded education takes longer than she’d hoped. When she returns to the job promised upon her graduation, she discovers the hometown doctor has died. His replacement has no use for a female doctor. Nor do two other offices where she applied. Rosie takes a chance on answering an ad for a mail-order bride for a man intent on the Cherokee Strip Land Run. Surely, people populating a new town will accept medical care wherever they can get it.
Beck Shepherd returned empty-handed from the 1889 Oklahoma land run. Trying it alone didn’t work. He vows to win a plot this time, but he needs a partner to achieve his dream of opening a mercantile. The easiest way is to arrange for a wife so he places an ad in a matrimonial newsletter. Ideally, level-headed Beck would like more time to decide, but Rosie’s two letters reveal the heart of a woman as determined as he is for a new start. But her bold plan for securing a claim might be the act that tears them apart…forever.

A sweet, western romance.
Rosie, a female doctor, is unwelcomed in her step-father's home and decides to answer a mail order bride notice in hopes of moving west and setting up her clinic. Beck made the first Oklahoma territory land run and didn't stake a claim, so he needs a wife to make a second run. They join forces and head out west. The story includes some background information about the Cherokee Strip Land Rush that's very interesting.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author and publisher for a temporary, digital ARC in return for my review.
When I am looking for an easy read, something that doesn't tax my mind including a bit of history along with a romance, I search for a novella by Linda Carroll-Bradd. Though this is the ninth story in the Land Run Mail Order Brides series, it can be easily read as a standalone.
The continuing theme about the 'land run' really happened. Sadly, it was not the best of times the US government made a decision which affected many Native Americans. All made in the name of progress. I was touched by this event more than I realized.
I liked both Beck and Rosie and thought they made an interesting couple, but I wanted more romance this time around. It might have been because I didn't care for what Americans understood was theirs back in the 1800s, but I appreciate the effort the author made to make the plot believable.
Thank you to NetGalley, Linda Carroll-Bradd and Inked Figments for allowing me to read an ARC in exchange for an honest review.
"Rosie's Gamble", by Linda Carroll-Bradd, is a novella in the "Land Run Mail Order Brides" series. This time period really fascinates me, so I was interested in reading this book. It centers around Beck Shepherd, who is ready to claim some land both for a home and for his new mercantile business. However, he can't do this by himself, so he writes an ad for a mail order bride. Rosabelle Ardmore (Rosie), whose mother died in childbirth, has received medical training and is ready to get out of her abusive father's house. When Rosie answers Beck's advertisement, they plan to just be business partners at first in order to both get what they want (him: a mercantile; her: a medical practice).
However, their plans to just be platonic partners is turned on its head when they meet and sparks fly. I enjoyed the sweet relationship between Rosie and Beck, though I would have liked a little more chemistry between the two. Overall, this was a quick, fun read. Thanks to NetGalley for the ARC. All opinions are my own.
Very sweet romance with some historical facts I’ve never heard about. Very enjoyable read, Thank you netgalley and publisher for this arc in exchange of an honest review.
Linda Carroll-Bradd is one of my go to authors. Her books are light-hearted, clean, historically accurate romances. Rosie and Beck exchange letters leading up to their meeting and agreement to marry and partner for the land run. Although we know the difficulty that came from the land run, it does not take away from the enjoyment of the budding friendship and romance that builds for these two. Beck accepts Rosie for her independence and medical knowledge just as she wants to learn all she can to help him make a claim for them and the family they will have. Ms. Carroll-Bradd seems to make sure each of her stand-alone romances are different, with various personalities and backgrounds to help make her books enjoyable.
It was a sweet, light-hearted love story. I love stories set in this time frame and this did not disappoint. I would say this is safe for most ages besides one part in the story toward the end. Very clean for the most part and enjoyed Rosie being a female doctor. I plan to pick up more of her books in this series.
1893 this is a story about Rosie and Beck. She was unhappy and unwanted in her stepfather's house. Beck had posted a wish for a bride to go on the Oklahoma land rush and claim a spot for his new store. They communicate by letter and decide that she'll go to him, and they'll try to get a claim. She's a doctor and very independent, used to taking care of herself. Well written clean romance as they get to know each other and struggle with issues, with each other and with others. Good read right to the end.
I received this book free from the author, publisher and NetGalley book review bloggers program. I was not required to write a positive review. The opinions I have expressed are my own.
