Description
This unique giftbook introduces the story of three Irish holiday traditions, as shared by acclaimed film and television actor, Neal McDonough. Each tradition is an opportunity to make Christmas more meaningful for ourselves and others, wherever we live and whatever our heritage.
One of these traditions is placing a lighted candle in the window—a reminder that long ago the Holy Family sought shelter but found no room at the inn. Over the centuries, a candle in the window has also become a symbol of openheartedness, signaling to the poor and downtrodden that they can find refuge within.
Another world-renowned Irish tradition is adorning the house with branches of holly. But a simple wreath of thorned green leaves and bright red berries is more than decoration. It recalls the inevitable sorrows of life and assures us that heartache can give way to hope, joy, and peace at Christmastime.
Finally, in Ireland, Christmas is the time to prepare homes and hearts for the new year. Besides cleaning the barn and whitewashing the cottage, the holidays are for remembering others, reconciling differences, and returning kindnesses. Even the customary Christmas morning dip in the icy sea is a chance to be washed clean and begin anew.
The book also includes a piano/vocal score for “Come to Him This Holy Night,” performed in concert by The Tabernacle Choir with Mr. McDonough. These new lyrics were written to the tune of a beloved Irish folk song and connects each of the Irish traditions to the timeless account of the Nativity. It’s a unique gift of story and song that will bring Christmas joy to people everywhere.

This book contains the narrative given by guest performer Neal McDonough for the Tabernacle Choir’s annual Christmas concert on PBS. (Recorded in 2021 for broadcast in December 2022.) It includes beautiful illustrations, three Irish holiday traditions and the lyrics to a new hymn set to a traditional tune.
As someone who has been able to attend in person the majority of the Christmas Concerts by the Tabernacle Choir I think this would be a lovely reminder of the performance. It would also be a welcome addition if you collect Christmas Books or watch the Choirs Christmas celebrations.
If you’re ordering online (without being able to physically see it) be mindful it is very short at only 32 pages. Thank you to NetGalley and Shadow Mountain Publishing for an ARC in exchange for an honest review.

Beautiful traditions that I hope I can start in my own family. I am always looking for more Christ-centered ideas for my home and especially around Christmas. It is my favorite holiday, not because of the commercialized celebrations but instead for what Christmas really means: More Christ. It was interesting to learn about Neal's history and I am excited to watch the broadcast associated with this book on YouTube.

I loved learning about the three Christmas Irish Traditions that all centered around the Savior and his birth. Holiday traditions are such an important part of building a strong bond between family, and our community. They give us a sense of belonging and a way to express what is important to us. Come To Him This Holy Night does exactly that.

This is a beautiful Christmas book. I love learning about how Christmas is celebrated around the world. Usually those traditions are more secular and I loved that these three Irish traditions were about our Savior. They are beautiful traditions that I hope to implement in my home. The illustrations and song were also beautiful and helped bring these traditions to life.

This was a little different as an ebook, having different graphics on pages, so I had to turn a lot. But I really loved the Irish Christmas traditions talked about. It was beautifully done!
This is a lovely book for the holidays. The illustrations evoke a gentler time, while the text speaks to readers today. The hymn is beautiful, and I think this will be welcomed in many homes this holiday season.
A wonderful Christmas book that traditions from the country of Ireland have to celebrate the season and the Christ Child.
What a lovely book about three Irish Christmas traditions: preparing hearts and home, lighting a candle in a window, and the holly wreath. The pictures are gorgeous and the writing is beautiful. All three traditions are Christ-centered and touched my heart.
This book goes along with a performance by the Choir and Orchestra at Temple Square that can be watched on YouTube.
At the end of the book, there is a short biography about the choir and about the guest performer in the previously mentioned performance, Neal McDonough.
A great book for any time of year, but especially at Christmas time.
