5 stars for "A Scandal in Newport" (a novella). This continues the story of Amelia from "The Heiress Series", who is engaged and planning her wedding in America. It includes a mystery of kidnappings and ransom of daughters of the very wealthy. I love Newport and the Gilded Age as the setting. I have seen and toured the mansions (cottages) there. I wish more romances were set in this unique American time period. I requested this book not realizing I have already read and reviewed it as part of a box set in December 2020. I checked and didn't see any changes in the story so I am using my original review. Thank you to NetGalley and Victory Editing NetGalley Co-op for an ARC ebook in exchange for an honest review.
A Scandal in Newport is the second book in The Heiress series which features Thomas Sheridan and Amy Newbold, the secondary couple from Waltz with a Stranger. This is called a novella which is just 129 pages, so it is a fast read but well worth it.
Amy and Thomas are newly engaged and of course a celebration is required. The family travel to Newport, Rhode Island for the rest of the summer season. As they go from party to party in the "cottages" mansions of the wealthy someone is kidnapping young women who are recently engaged. Amy tries to spend time with these girls to see if she can discover why and who took them. When trying to save an acquaintance, she finds herself the unintended target of a kidnapping.
This is a sweet story of a determined young woman in love. Amy is feisty and definitely keeps Thomas on his toes as she wants to take their relationship further. I really liked the relationship between Thomas and Amy. It was warm with mutual respect for one another.
Thomas and Amy are adorable in their love and connection in this novella. As second in the Heiress series it is not your typical romance and it is still charming. The mystery of the prior kidnappings lets you know another kidnappings is in the offing and will be solved by Thomas and Amy.
Although A Scandal in Newport is a stand-alone, I enjoyed having read Waltz With a Stranger first. This is a great afternoon, somewhat light-hearted read!
