Description
In a colony full of busy beavers, one bashful beaver is hiding a gigantic secret.
Lulu tries to be a typical beaver, but her dream of becoming an artist is getting out! Despite her friends’ encouragement, Lulu’s struggle with fear and self-doubt has led her into a pattern of destroying her artwork — until an unexpected encounter changes Lulu, and the forest, for good.
With funny asides, sound effects, and elements of comic-book style, Bethany Gano’s debut, eye-opening tale urges kids to confront gloomy thinking — and gives them the courage to bravely share their gifts.

Advance Praise
“Onomatopoeic lines and bright bursting colors relay the story of a little beaver who wants to do more than merely chomp wood. Ebullience ferries this inspiring tale forward, and the revelation of Lulu’s beautiful differences is a triumphant moment for all.”

“The idea of feeling…boxed in by others’ expectations…is a complicated subject to tackle, but Gano handles it deftly. Gano’s evocative text, combined with her dynamic and multihued mixed media illustrations, make for an immersive and atmospheric reading experience.”

Lulu the Beaver is an adorable, incredibly well illustrated book with a great message at the heart of it.
I sat down with my six-year-old and we read this book together. It was simple and straight forward and he was able to read it aloud and understand it himself. The story was evenly paced with short paragraphs on each page. We were in awe of the gorgeous illustrations that clearly depicted the events of the story, particularly once Lulu starts to fly through the night sky on a journey to turn the shoulds into the coulds.
A perfect book for grade school children that teaches them a great lesson about embracing their uniqueness and differences. I highly recommend this beautiful book.
Thank you to Bunny Books and NetGalley for a digital ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This book is the story of an adorable beaver named Lulu who likes being a beaver but also dreams of being an artist. She's worried that people will judge her, that she should forget about her dreams, and that being a beaver means she can't also be an artist. Her close friends support her and encourage her to shoot for the stars and follow her heart. It's a wonderful way to show children that no matter what you are or what people think you should be, you have to be true to yourself. This would make a great addition to a social skills library or a classroom library!
I love childrens book because they always aim to send a positive message in the most simple yet creative ways, something you don't usually find in adults books. This one talks about Lulu a beaver who, unlike other beavers, doesn't like chomping trees or building lodges. Lulu wants to be an artist but she thinks that the "typical beaver" doesn't have to do anything besides building in streams so she hides her talents. But at the end, and with the help of her friends she was able to find her true voice, what she truly wants to do in life and not what others think she has to do. And this is how you teach kids that they should embrace their talents instead of hiding them to "fit" in society and to live to other people's expectations. Love it!
What a cute and interesting book ! I absolutely loved to read this book and I think it can teach a great lesson to children. This book especially felt close to me as it is talking about creativity. I found it clear, easy to read to children and with really nice drawing. I think this book will be great for children as you can easily start a conversation about the book and the morale of the story is easy to understand and explain. I will definitely buy this book in a near future !
I loved this sweet story! It’s about a shy beaver who just wants to be an artist. I adored it. And the art was gorgeous. So sweet and my 4 year old son loved it too!
This is a charming children's story of a shy beaver who dreams of being an artist. I loved the message of chasing your dreams and being proud of yourself. Highly recommend for children!
This is a charming book with lovely illustrations. There are many lessons to be learned from Lulu, the beaver, including not being afraid to dream and make it happen even if our circumstances do not permit or limit us. I loved it!
I absolutely loved this story! Beautifully illustrated!! I can’t say enough about the illustrations and graphics as well as the storyline itself.
