Description
As the day comes to a close, Goodnight Love helps children (ages 2–5) connect to the warmth of their hearts through the power of lovingkindness. We foster self-compassion by sending care to ourselves. We share kindness by wishing good things for our families and friends. And we cultivate unconditional love by radiating the wish for happiness and peace on Earth.
Goodnight Love brings the heart-based practice of lovingkindness (metta) into the ritual of bedtime, with adorable sloth characters that kids will delight in practicing beside. The beautiful, richly colored art portrays a caregiver sloth guiding a young sloth through this relaxing evening meditation, helping children slip into slumber with a heart filled with kindness.
Advance Praise
“Prepare for bedtime with soothing meditative rituals. Gentle, reassuring, and just the thing to lull children into sweet slumber.”—Kirkus Reviews
“Beginning with two deep belly breaths and a visualization of warm light radiating out from their hearts, a big and little sloth move through a series of three contemplative phrases (“May I be healthy./ May I be safe and protected./ May I be happy and peaceful”), variations on which they apply to self, family, friends, forests, mountains, oceans, the universe, and the world before snuggling down. Soft-edged illustrations from Watkins soothe with starry purple skies, luminous rainforest views, and scenes of the natural world crowded with friendly smiling faces. Throughout, Loundon Kim’s light-handed prompts encourage interactivity (“How were you kind today?”), reinforcing the teachable aspects of this contemplative bedtime routine.”—Publishers Weekly
“Goodnight Love by Sumi Loudon Kim is a sweet bedtime (or anytime!) book to share with our children. What better way to close out the day than sharing love and kindness with those around us. The illustrations are beautiful and engaging. I can see this book on nightstands to be shared over and over again.”—Sharon Salzberg, author of Real Change

Great illustrations, Sloths are one of my favourite animals.
I like how this books starts, by getting us into the right body and mind relaxation .

5 Stars 🌟 😘
What a lovely peaceful bedtime story. This story is perfect to read to little ones right before nap or bedtime.
It centers around finding calm and thoughtful meditation of others. How to practice Metta (loving kindness) meditation. It's a great way though to start young with your children to deeply thinking about others right before sleep and hopefully would instill the same thoughts in their daily lives.
The illustrations of this book and the use of sloths was perfect. It's very well detailed but not with over stimulating colors and characters. The colors chosen were calming and sloths are a great representation of slowing down.
Great job with this children's book and I look forward to reading more from this author.
Thank you to NetGalley, Shambhala Publications, Inc., and Bala Kids for this advanced reader copy. My review is voluntarily my own.
I will be posting this review to my Instagram page the.littlest.bookworm near publication date and will post on major retail sites on or close to publication.
This book is a great way to develop a bedtime routine. I enjoyed the thoughtfulness it encouraged and the illustrations are beautiful!
This is a beautiful book, both visually and in spirit. As a decades-long yoga and meditation student and teacher, I love quality books that allow me to authentically share the practice I hold so dear with my children. Goodnight Love describes the process of metta bhavana, or loving kindness meditation, in a way that is accessible and relatable even to the youngest children.
The illustrations of a variety of animal creatures are colorful, beautiful, and joyful. The words are simple, and my early reader loved reading the meditation elements herself. I do wish the author had included the part of the meditation about sending loving kindness to those we have difficulties with, because it teaches an important element of compassion. Even still, I highly recommend this book for anyone, whether novice or experienced! It can be a cherished part of a peaceful bedtime routine.
Thank you to Shambhala Publications and NetGalley for providing an advance reader copy for me to review. My family loved it!
Goodnight Love made my heart warm. It is simply a sweet bedtime story filled with beautiful illustrations, my favorite animal the sloth, and positive mindfulness techniques. I think this book would be something you could read with your child each night and would provide a lovely introduction to mindfulness and positive affirmations.
**Thankyou for this ARC!**
I enjoyed this children's book! I love the idea of a meditation for children to learn at a young age! I believe it's super important to learn how to control your emotions and meditation is a great way to start! Using the animals will help keep their attention and focus! I look forward to trying this out with my 19 month old son, who already has a strong love for reading and books! I would definitely recommend giving it a chance.
I received an ARC from NetGalley, but I will purchase a copy of this book so my children and I can do the meditations at bedtime. It says for ages 2-5, but I think they will relate to it even though they are a bit older. The book could be read as one long meditation, but I think we will probably do a small bit each night. The illustrations are cozy and lovely.
Goodnight Love is an absolutely adorable and sweet bedtime story featuring a wonderful little sloth family. Goodnight Love is a bedtime meditation story so throughout it teaches you ways to mediate and to wind down before bed. While I don't have problems falling asleep, I have problems staying asleep, adding in some meditation and positive thoughts before bed certainly can't hurt! And who doesn't love to read a story featuring adorable little sloths?
I received a free e-copy of this book in order to write this review, I was not otherwise compensated.
Goodnight Love is a very calming and sweet meditation story. Not only does it walk you through Little Sloth's daily routine, it teaches you how to make your own. Highly recommended for a very calming bedtime story with a purpose.
The illustrations are amazing. I cannot wait to bring a physical copy of this book home.
Thank you to NetGalley and Shambhala Publications for the opportunity to read and review this book.
Wow….what a breathtaking story that teaches us about Metta ( lovingkindness meditation). The illustrations are so beautiful as well. It is a sweet bedtime story that guides us step by step on how to meditate by loving the world around us. What a great way to teach kindness, empathy, and gratitude to little ones. Can’t wait to buy a physical copy and take this book home.
Thank you to the publisher and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest review.
This is a sweet little, beautifully illustrated book about bedtime meditation for children. Children, parents and caretakers will enjoy this book for a bedtime story. Public libraries will find it a desirable acquisition as well.
Parents and Grandparents are always looking for an outstanding bedtime book. Well, you don't have to look any further. Goodnight Love by Sumi Loudon Kim is a TREASURE. A bedtime book with a sloth mother and baby, for goodness' sake who doesn't love sloths?! The illustrations obviously are beautiful and captivating but the cadence, the soothing rhythm is so beautiful I put my hand over my heart while reading the prose. The lovely writing is basically a love letter to the world, for us to stop and take stock of the beauty of it all and then give a blessing for health, safety, protection, happiness, and peace. This book as I was reading kept thinking about children in recovery from abuse that lived in harmful places and that hopefully they could finally be safe and have this as their bedtime book.
When you get to the end it all makes sense because the author explains METTA Meditation and that's basically what the entire beautifully guided book is meditation. May we all have this in our lives for us and our loved ones but especially children to know love in their life. There is a guide on how to practice this and also how the book came to be.
I would like to thank the author for not forgetting about the children for she was inspired by a booklet Seeding the Heart: LovingKindness Practice for Children. Also the exquisite art by Laura Watkins. so stunning, it draws you in and you are there in this beautiful meditation blessing.
I would like to thank NetGalley and the publisher Shambhala Productions for the opportunity to read and review Goodnight Love by Sumi Loudon Kim and Laura Watkins for creating an absolutely exquisite and much needed bedtime book and may we all remember kindness and love for all humans, animals and all nature.
I love meditation so much that I use it often in my classroom: sometimes to calm anxiety before a test, sometimes to destress after big assignments, randomly to take a brain break. We have talked about the power of breathing. This gem of a picture book blends a mantra with breathing into a beautiful synergy of self-love and self-care. I absolutely LOVE how cute and whimsical the illustrations are. The sloths are the focal point, but the landscape and other animals are rendered with the same light and love.
I highly recommend this one for anyone who loves sloths, values meditation or needs a soothing and relaxing novel to help them fall asleep (especially littles).
This is a really cute children's books about thinking on kindness as you go to bed each night. Sending kindness to yourself, your family/friends and the earth. A great reminder for everybody!

Dreamy illustrations match bedtime meditations, making a new, relaxing bedtime favorite. Engaging prompts teach your little one, self-love, appreciation, gratitude for others, as well as nature.
Loved this book! The illustrations were just gorgeous. The message was what our world needs more of, spreading kindness to ourselves and others. I will be adding this to my home library for sure.
This was a lovely, lovely children's bedtime book.
Filled with absolutely gorgeous illustrations [sloths and other animals, along with stars and lakes and so much more], this book is told in simple verse to call one to bed and to redirect the mind towards sleep. Filled with reminders to love oneself and those around them, including everything found in nature, it also reminds us to keep others in our hearts and to wish them health and happiness as well.
There are notes at the end of the book about the practice of guided meditation and ways to begin a practice with your family and I found them to be very helpful.
This book is perfect for families with littles [and not so little] that have trouble going to sleep or quieting down for sleep as it will help them develop practices that will calm them and remind them of love and caring and others.
This was just lovely; I am so glad that I read it.
Thank you to NetGalley, Sumi Loudon Kim, Laura Watkins - Illustrator, and Shambhala Publications, Inc/Bala Kids for providing this ARC in exchange for an honest review.
This is a bedtime story for children wrapped around the eastern religion practice of meditation. With beautiful illustrations and repetition to help the child remember the “chant” the story is well written and serves well the purpose for which it seems to have been written. Without telling a real story, the pages themselves lend themselves to getting the child to relax and sleep well as he/she considers all of creation and all who touch their world.
Disclaimer: I received a complimentary copy of this book from the publisher. I was not required to write a positive review. All opinions expressed are my own.
Cute read for little ones to help wind down at night. The illustrations are absolutely gorgeous. I was excited to read this with my two little ones who tend to be bouncing off the walls at bedtime. They were captivated by the pretty pictures. When. They're a bit older I think they'll really love the meditation that the book walks through.
It has been a while since I read some picture books and today, I was stuck for books as the past two days, everything I tried was just not grabbing me - they were boring me. I knew that a cute picture book would do it. Goodnight Love was a very cute book about meditation named Metta which focuses on aspects of kindness and thanking everything around them. The book starts with a cute sloth who is getting ready to go to bed, but before he could go to bed, he decides to go through his practice of metta. Goodnight Love is the perfect picture book for children aged 3-6 years old and helps children learn to appreciate everything around them and take a breath and acknowledge the beauty around them from the mountains to the jungle floors and most of all love from family and friends. The other thing that was great about Goodnight Love is the book follows repetition with the metta mantra that helps children to think positively every day. Goodnight Love is also beautifully illustrated by Laura Watkins and is a book that all parents should have in their children's book collection.
