This book is a great way to connect with kids of all ages (at least 3 and older I’d say. Each day has a quick game or drawing activity or prompt that helps families get to know each other better and just have fun together. I liked that the intro encourages families to use it however works best for them, whether it be a few a day or once a week. I also think this would be great for a classroom too. Some of the prompts would have to be adapted since it is written for families. But that could be easily done.
(Thanks to the publisher for the ARC in exchange for an honest review.)
This is such a good reference guide book for parents and guardians to naturally start a conversation and actually have fun with the kids. Instant learning and can be readily applicable are what these various tips and techniques provide in the amazing compilation. The presentation is fun and the reading experience will be quite enjoyable for both the parents and the young readers. Some prompts even include activities which are interactive and fun.
Go for this. It will make your day start much better when you have the first meal of the day with your kids. Amazing book!
Thank you, Harper Celebrate, for the advance reading copy.
This was a fun book to look through. My son and I did several of the prompts. He especially enjoyed the weird food prompt. It was a fun opportunity for him and I to share a few laughs. I like that these activities only require a short amount of time and involve lots of different things. I look forward to doing more of these with my son.
This is an amazing book! As someone who struggles with what to talk about and/or how to start a conversation, it's a great prompt! The only bad part is that it's not library appropriate as there is space on many pages for family members to write on it, color in it, etc. Great for giving as a gift, though!
Yes! I love these book prompts. It is such a better alternative to 'How was your day?' or 'Roses and Thorns. ' I already preordered this book for home and told a fellow school counselor about this book. Parents are always looking for a way to connect with their children, with not a lot of success. This book can make this task easier. I wonder how older children would also engage in these questions or if there could be a 'teen' version.
Thanks for sharing!
This is a great resource for connecting as a family. It's easy to make conversation with our toddler but the examples given here have been great for my teenage stepson who we usually get grunts out of. I liked that the suggestions are so varied that they don't feel so structured.
Pleasantly surprised by how dynamic this book is. I love it as a family guidebook for silly and serious conversations — basically a way to get communicating.
We have a 4.5 year old and baby and this book is fantastic for the 4.5 year old. So many great ideas for activities, jumping off points, and conversation starters. It's a great tool for parents who are trying to build connection with their kids, especially around the dinner table. Depending on the kid I could see it working well for ages 3 and up.
Thank you Netgalley for the digital advanced reader copy. I'll be buying the print version when it comes out so we can do the activities and record our answers.
This is such a practical book.
You can find ideas for starting conversations that include the whole family. No matter the age, no matter how busy you are.
The book offers a short guide for parents on how to connect with the children.
It would make a perfect gift for any occasion!
An easy-to-use family time resource. This book gives you a year’s worth of prompts that engage you and your kids on all sorts of topics, games, creative prompts, and conversation starters to connect with one another and learn a little more about one another. I will be buying this. Makes a great teacher gift for classroom use!
I absolutely adore this book! I'm a big believer in family dinners, and this is the perfect companion to those communal meals. While I personally love having solid conversations starters that can lead to something meaningful, my kids tend to prefer games like 20 Questions for more mindless dinner entertainment. "The Daily Conversation Starter" helped us meet in the middle, with an engaging mix of imaginative questions, artistic prompts, and silly games like tongue twisters that keep my kids happy, mixed in with some very purposeful reflections on family values and experiences. While I think the book would best fit families with elementary schoolers, most of the prompts are mature enough for even my teenagers to be willing to do. I was gifted an electronic copy of this book for an honest review, but I'll be pre-ordering our family a print copy to work through this year as well.
I absolutely LOVE this book! I have a 5-year-old, so some of this she isn't able to give super good answers on. We are using this at the dinner table to shake up our conversation. Sometimes my daughter gets stuck on what to tell us about school that day, so we add in a question or two from this book. It has been so fun. I would definitely recommend this one.
I received an adventure reader copy of this book to read in exchange for an honest review via netgalley and the publishers.
The Daily Family Conversation Starter is such a useful book for any parent and family to have. Conversation doesn't always come naturally to people, including children, and this is a great book for everyone to access.
This is a helpful guide to make and have fun and memorable conversations with your children. There's different types of questions to help support you and your personality, from fun ones and silly games to more meaningful and imaginative ones. I would say you should be able to adapt most of these questions and ideas to fit the interests and ages of your children, too, once you get into using it.
This books is full of varied discussion topics and activities--there are lots of different types and topics covered. It's probably not something you'll be pulling out just to fill a few spare minutes, though. For one, it's addressed to the children of the family, so they're really supposed to run the show. But the topics and activities are often more involved than simple discussion--you're drawing or acting things out or researching things, etc. It's almost always going to take a little bit of time and dedicated focus, rather than being something simple and quick you can chat about at the dinner table or while waiting at the doctor's office. That being said, I actually think a lot of the suggestions are worthwhile. So often books like this are filled with silly things no one really cares to spend time on, but I feel the quality of the suggestions here is higher. As long as you're prepared for this taking more time to execute, I think you'll be quite happy with it.
If you’re stuck in a family rut of busy life, different day to days, and stagnant conversations. This would be beautiful to not only read from at family dinner but just when you’re sitting around relaxing after a long day. It’s important to make time and truly understand each other. Definitely give this a try!
I'm so grateful for having been given the opportunity to read this.
It is so easy to get lost in a busy day to day life. As a parent, the most important thing is making sure your children are happy and healthy. This book is a great tool to take a step back from the busy stresses of day to day life and open up the opportunity for 5 minutes of quality time speaking with our little ones. This book is suitable for a range of ages, it has a great range of prompts/topics and games to connect with each other. I loved sharing this with my 9 year old son. This book is great for families but being in the education role I think it would be a great tool for classrooms too.
Thank you so much to Harper Celebrate & Net Galley for the ARC.
I cannot wait to get this in the paper back version!
Love it! We've done a few of these as a family and my kids have loved it. We try to keep our mealtimes sacred for family connection and conversations and these are the perfect tool to help us do that well. Some of them are serious and lead to deep conversations. Some are silly and whimsical. A good mixture of both laughter, tears, and seriousness to engage the whole person!
Whether commuting together, sitting at the dinner table, or preparing for bedtime, The Daily Family Conversation Starter invites you to share, discover, and laugh together as you create family memories that last a lifetime.
Exactly what we needed as a family during dinner! Engaging, unique prompts that involve more than just older kids.
Great book of 5 minute topics to discuss as a family. I like that it starts out with an agreement your family works through as to how to use it. I also like that the hard copy version has an area to check off topics you've already completed, so you can skip around if desired. This would be a great gift for Mother's or Father's Day or another holiday, or to get if you're interested in reconnecting.
I love an easy to follow and FUN conversation book! I read this in the car with a 10 year old and an 11 year old and they LOVED the questions. They LOVED the variety and the conversations that the questions started. When we arrived at our destination , the kids (and me too) were upset that our conversation with this book will need to end...for now! I've already recommended it to a colleague to use with her elementary age students who will be engaging in an enrichment writing activity -- these prompts are perfect to get their ideas flowing. I plan to purchase it to have on my dinner table and will gift to families in my social circle as well. The variety of depth in questions/prompts is top notch -- some are silly, some are deep ...and everything in between. Some require movement, all require creativity thinking. It's a winning book for sure and should be on everyone's dinner table....or in their car so that when grown ups and younger siblings are waiting for the older sibling's practice to end, there's something to keep us all entertained and connected!
An absolutely delightful book to help get you out of your conversation rut. While this is aimed towards families I think it could easily be adapted to be used in classrooms and just in general for people looking to improve their conversation skills. I really deeply appreciated how neutral the prompts were while also being fun and dynamic, a family from any background would be able to pick this book up and find prompts that work for them.
The Daily Family Conversation Starter was not exactly what I was expecting. It was better than expected. I love that not only is this written to take only 5 minutes of your time each day, the daily conversation starters are just that....great ways to start a deeper conversation and get to know the members of your family better AND in an entertaining way that is relevant for anyone of any age. I think this book could be used not only for families, but for any friend relationship. Or even to use while dating. (At least most of the questions would be great to use to get to know anyone...just change the word "family" to "friend" or whatever you like before answering).
One extra thing this book does is to help you set ground rules before starting to answer the questions. This is a sure way to help everyone understand what this is all about and to know what to expect while working through the book.
This would be a great gift to give anyone. I would highly recommend it.
Thank you Netgalley for allowing me to read and review this book. These opinions are completely my own.
I think most of these questions and challenges would be fabulous for a classroom setting. I'm already picturing a famous person debate. The only page I didn't like was the chubby Bunny due to the choking risk.
This is a good book to think out of the box for family conversations. It opened up other ideas to connect with kids of all ages. I like the different prompts each day; such as a quick game or drawing activity. It helps the family get to know each other better and just have fun. Going through this with I liked that it encourages families to use it however works best for them. I think a lot of this could work really well in a classroom too. It would have to be adapted since it is written for families. But that could be easily done.
I enjoyed doing some of these prompts with my kids. And will continue to do more in the future!
Thanks NetGalley for this ARC.

Impressions: Goal: This book is a “map for guiding you (and your family) through stimulating conversations.” In using “storycatching,” you will learn to better share, listen, and connect. This book gives questions to prompt fun, even deep conversation. I love these prompts. My husband and I have found that in this busy season of life having questions on hand to ask each other starts a conversation that we might have been too tired or “busy” to have. We use an app in our marriage to start conversation, but I love that this book starts a family conversation. The questions are family-friendly and prompt a special bonding that can be shared at the dinner table, in the car, or wherever you are together. One thing that makes these prompts so great is they have helped our family to brainstorm ideas and life together.
