Thank you to NetGalley for the ARC of Olive All At Once by Mariam Gates. This is a perfect SEL read-aloud because it validates every child's feelings, no matter how complex or "mixed-up". The illustrations are captivating and the message is presented loud and clear.... it's always ok to feel how you're feeling, even if sometimes you can't understand all of the emotions yourself. Can't wait to see this on my classroom library shelf!

This was a really well written book about feelings. It has gorgeous illustrations and it has representation with people of different skin colors. Often times, I find that children's books have one skin color in its illustrations. Olive has a lot of emotions and the book shows Olive going through her day to day life and it explains her emotions. It also explains to children that it is okay to have a mix of emotions.

I LOVED the illustrations of this book. The colors are so vibrant and beautiful and I know kids would be attracted to the pictures, Books about feelings are so important for growing emotionally intelligent kids and I loved the way Olive's feelings are all explored. It felt slightly disjointed, but I think kids would like it.

This book came at the perfect time, my little guy has been having big emotions recently so we have been trying out a few books about emotions, and I love this one! Most of the books we have read don’t really mention how you can feel conflicting feelings at once and this books does it so well! My little guy loved the artwork as well! Such a good read!

Olive All at Once would be a great addition to any classroom’s SEL curriculum. Olive shares that it’s ok to have conflicting feelings. That we might feel delighted AND jealous at a friend’s birthday party. This is so important for children to understand - that we have many feelings and sometimes they get jumbled up!

Another great children’s book! I read this to my newborn so it may have been over her head lol, but I know my toddler would love it. It’s kind of hard to read by ebook, but maybe that will be cleared up / made easier come pub time. I loved the lessons it taught, and how it went back and forth between the narrator and Olive herself. I’m sure the physical book is absolutely adorable.

The story was cute and it is easy for children to grasp the concept of. Olive is a little girl who is coming to terms with the different feelings she has.
This book gives aid to children who are beginning to grasp that it is ok to have multiple feelings at the same time.
This is a perfect story time read for parents and teachers. I do think if young children were to read this on their own, it may be a struggle to understand the difference between Olive’s dialogue and the narration. Otherwise it is a great story.

This book is about an adorable little girl who feels her feelings all at once. She learns how emotions aren’t always binary and can be mixed together at any point of the day. Thank you so much to Sounds True Publishing and Netgalley for the ebook to read and review.

Olive has feelings, lots of them but sometimes she feels them together and all her emotions become a jumble with too much going on.

This was such a perfect way to showcase to children the ways emotions can overcome you in multiple ways, how you can feel one important feeling and another will come join it even if you don’t want it there.

I liked the story, Olive was adorable and how she kept talking to the storyteller to share exactly what emotions she was feeling and why she was feeling them. She was so sweet, I liked the way everything was explained and the adorable illustrations along with it all.

This is a great book to share with children, it’s a good way to be teaching about emotions but in a fun and easier way. I really enjoyed this sweet book and how easy it would be for children to understand and follow along with it.

This is a beautifully illustrated book for children to help them understand their emotions. So many books will talk about various emotions, but this one deals with the reality that we will have contradictory emotions at the same time. Children need help understanding that they may be happy and jealous at the same time.

This is a great picture book about emotions and how we can have contradicting emotions at the same time - it's a great book to open discussions with the little one about emotions, identifying them and understanding them.

There is no narrative story per se, the book follows Olive and a narrator as they narrate how Olive is feeling in various situations, to which Olive reply about the other emotions she has. It's a funny dialogue.

The illustrations are very cute too, brightly coloured but in a harmonious way.

Great little book that opens up the converstiaon of the complexity of feelings for the youngest of children. This could be a great conversation starters for adult caretakers with the children in their life about how they are doing about different aspects or changes in their life. Using Olive as the main character also helps personalize the emotions and I can easily see how parents could refer to Olive and how she might feel in a given situation, if it is hard for a child to identify their own emotions about something.
The art style was lovely as well and the use of colors facilitated the understanding of these complex feelings.

Olive All At Once
by Mariam Gates

Social emotional learning resource for early elementary school. Needed in classrooms to show that emotions are not just one thing or another. They get mixed up. This makes it hard to understand what your feeling. This book shows in simple was how this happens. It shows how to name your emotions with out prejudice or consequences. This may help students understand the difficult conflicts of emotions.

Olive All At Once by Mariam Gates is a tender and insightful picture book that beautifully captures the complexity of children's emotions. Through the endearing character of Olive, young readers are invited to explore the nuanced and sometimes contradictory feelings that arise in various situations.

As Olive navigates the ups and downs of everyday life, from the excitement and apprehension of the first day of school to the mix of joy and jealousy at a friend's birthday party, Gates skillfully portrays the rich tapestry of emotions children experience. What sets Olive All At Once apart is its compassionate and empowering message about embracing and accepting our emotions. Olive is a relatable and adorable character and we learn that she experiences different emotions and feelings in a day, in different settings and under different circumstances like all kids/everyone else.
The book approaches this fact in a cute and non-preachy way.
What stood out was Olive’s expressions and her own telling of how she feels.

I read this to my son who has alot of big feelings. I loved it! The accuracy of feeling so many different things at once is validating, especially to those who feel emotions so deeply. I will definitely be reading this to my kids again.

A fantastic addition to any picture book collection, this little book normalizes the way in which a single moment can provoke many different emotions. As Olive moves through her adventure the narrative gradually shifts from an either/or format to a both/and format, while visual coding of colorful emotions swirled together provides another way for young readers to understand that feelings can be a bit messy. While this would be a fantastic story time read aloud paired with something like My Many Colored Days (by Dr Seuss) and a messy color craft, the story touches on important milestones in any young child's life like the beginning of a new school year or the arrival of a new sibling making it a wonderful all round read for libraries serving young patrons and their caregivers. Thank you to NetGalley for access to this arc!

A book designed to show the young reader that mixed emotions are regularly a thing, and that it's alright to feel both this way and that at the same time. Olive is happy and jealous at a party, excited and yet scared on day one of school, and so on. The text is fairly distinctive as it goes about this routine message – we have the narrator and the speech bubbles from Olive, and oftentimes Olive is there to correct the narrator, or at least to clarify. It's obvious that could have been dreadful, but I certainly didn't mind it – it adds to the spin on this concept the book has, and makes the text more lively than the straight non-fiction lesson we might have got. This still isn't the ultimate, compellingly plotted book that demands being taken off the shelf, but if you think a child would gain from these pages they aren't going to dismiss them from lack of appeal, making this much more suitable an option than several alternatives. A healthy four stars, then.

Mariam Gates' book talks about an important topic especially for the kids who are growing up. Through the story of Olive, author tries to communicate that it is okay to feel different emotions at different times or even simultaneously. At a young age it can be difficult to understand the feelings and whether it is normal or not. Such book through captivating story and quirky pictures help the educators, teachers, and parents to talk about different emotions which are being felt by their kids and how to deal with them.
