Description

A WASHINGTON POST BEST ROMANCE NOVEL OF THE YEAR

In this smart and swoony adventure rom-com, a journalist and a movie star find themselves teaming up to cover up a murder...and falling for each other in the process.

When freelance journalist Khin Haymar is assigned by Vogue to get a scoop on Tyler Tun, Hollywood’s hottest movie, she's determined to succeed. Tyler has returned home to Myanmar to shoot his latest film, and if Khin’s able to get an exclusive, there may well be a permanent position waiting for her at Vogue Singapore.

Tyler has a very private life and doesn’t show any sign of letting down his walls for Khin. But then one night on set, a man follows Khin into the park. When he threatens her, Tyler steps in and things escalate fast. Khin knows they can’t go to the police, even if this was self defense, and even if this stranger seems to have targeted her specifically.

As Khin and Tyler work together to hide their secret and find out more about her attacker, they grow closer and Tyler finally starts opening up. But now the idea of writing the article gives Khin an uncomfortable morality-related guilt. Before long, everything hangs in the balance. Will they get away with murder? Can Khin get the exposé she needs for her dream job? And is she willing to risk Tyler’s trust in the process?

Do you like romcoms, true crime and also thinking about lives of celebrities? Yes? Then do I have a book for you! Pyae Moe Thet War did such an incredible job at creating such a deeply (painfully) relatable character in Khin and truly the celebrity of a book lovers dreams in Tyler that I can promise you you will laugh, gasp, shriek and cry just as much (if not more) than I did all while surrounded in the beautiful world of Myanmar and the behind the scenes of making a movie. 10/5 stars, cannot wait to read more from this incredible author.

THIS BOOK! 🤯 5 star read!!!

There is nothing I love more than an unhinged female lead within a suspense thriller WITH romance. SIGN 👏 ME 👏 UP!

I devoured this book, my goodness was it the perfect ratio of pacing and character development.

I will be purchasing this book for my shelf of book trophies and probably do a reread.

Do yourself a favor and read it.

Thank you Netgalley for the ARC 💜

This was an amazing read. It was my 2 favorite genres rolled into one book: Romance and mystery. It was also a great immersive cultural experience reading about Myanmar and learning about their celebrity, family, and food culture there. It was different from reading about movie stars in LA. Khin and Tyler both have their walls up to each other in the beginning and there is a level of mutual distrust between them, where Khin is a journalist shadowing Tyler for a scoop on his life and Tyler is an amazing actor who knows how to control his emotions and tells around other people. It was interesting to see how after sharing a life-altering experience together, these walls slowly come down and their relationship evolves.

I ADORED Tyler's character. Tyler is the protective type and adores Khin. He fell first and hard. There were some moments where I was crying because my heart broke for the two characters. Khin and Tyler had a lot of chemistry and I liked seeing them get to know each other past the initial journalist-subject relationship. I liked how even though Tyler was this amazing famous actor, Khin still held her own in the relationship and had her own brilliant and admirable accolades. They both were equals in the relationship and each brought their own assets to the table. Their respective best friends are also great side characters - they are so supportive and offer unconditional love to our main couple.

Thank you to St. Martin's Press and NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for an honest review!

I was so excited to start reading this book. My friend saw it and knew it screamed me. Some love and mystery? I’m sold. I’m certainly in my mystery rom-com era and this itches the scratch. It’s funny at the perfect moments and even some unexpected ones. It’s a quick read especially when you can’t put it down. 4.5/5

This book was ABSOLUTELY FANTASTIC and everyone should pick it up for an important, fun read that is full of heart. Pyae masterfully wove together a story that keeps you on your toes, makes you root for the main characters, and truly relate to their vulnerability. I could not put this book down!

This is a slow-burn masterpiece. With a hint of humor, this romantic thriller is a gut punch right in the feels.

Khin is a journalist who is tasked with interviewing and writing a cover story for Vogue about Tyler Tun, a Hollywood star. At first, this was her ticket to fame and fortune, and she would do anything to print his biggest secrets, but Tyler proved to be a difficult “job” in more ways than one. Khin quickly realizes that maybe her career isn’t as important as ruining Tyler’s career and demolishing his trust in her. Maybe other things are more important.

The banter between Khin and Tyler is laugh out loud funny. The writing dazzles and captures your heart. 5/5 stars. Thank you, NetGalley and St. Martin’s Press for the eARC.

The electrifying mix of romance and suspense kept me hooked from the first page. Khin and Tyler’s journey is a perfect blend of heart-pounding excitement and deep emotional connection. As they navigate the perilous situation of covering up a murder, their chemistry and growing trust create a mesmerizing dynamic. The intricate plot, with its clever twists and moral dilemmas, adds layers of depth to their story. The way their relationship evolves amid the danger and secrecy is beautifully done, making every page a delight. I enjoyed reading and would definitely recommend it as well.

A truly FUN novel. When Khin is in the throes of healing from her failed marriage, the last thing she's expecting is getting the biggest offer of her career as a journalist: an opportunity to write a cover piece on the most successful movie star, Tyler Tun. The most nerve-wracking part? A full-time job offer at Vogue Singapore is on the line if she fails to impress. Tyler Tun is an incredibly private person, and Khin's job is to uncover the secret he's so obviously harboring. While Khin has her doubts, she's willing to try. After all, what more could a thirty-something divorcee want than a fresh start in a new country? However, on Khin's first day on the job, she and Tyler find themselves in a situation (read: accidental murder on set) where all they can do is give each other full trust. There's no way either of them could get caught up in an accidental murder without ruining their lives, so they must both promise each other complete confidence that they won't confess.

"I Did Something Bad" is an incredibly hilarious venture into what it means to trust and love someone fully. It had me full-on belly laughing and was equally as heartfelt and emotional as it was funny. Pyae Moe Thet War has given us one of the best debuts I have read in a long time, and I will be thinking about this for weeks. I mean, a journalist and a movie star accidentally murdering a man and covering it up together, only to begin to catch feelings for one another? I genuinely can't think of anything better.

I really enjoyed this great debut! It had everything I wanted in a rom com. I couldn't put the book down because I was so eager to find out what was going to happen. The murder subplot was a great addition and the plot progressed at a nice pace. It was fun to get a closer look at the Hollywood scene and the process of making a movie, as well as all the secrets that come with fame. I enjoyed the development of Khin and Tyler's relationship, from potential accomplices in a murder to becoming lovers. I also appreciated the strong support system among the friends and can envision potential for spin-off books featuring some of them.

Thank you to NetGallery and to St. Martin's Press for giving me a copy of this book.
