Description
How far would you go to protect your home?
Light years from earth, on a rock in the outer edges of the universe the Drake family is doing everything in their power to protect their home from ruthless aliens known as the Hrum.
In this military science fiction epic adventure the Drake family have spent the last six long years fighting the relentless attacks from the Hrum. The Wrigley battlecruiser being their only stronghold after being separated from the fleet, while wave and wave of attacks have worn them thin.
The weary crew finally seem to have the upper hand but they’ve barely scratched the surface as to why the Hrum attacked in the first place. Is this just their nature or are they just afraid of us as much as we are them?
Will the Drake family conquer the Hrum or is this fantasy paranormal journey only just beginning?
In this epic military sci-fi adventure, a symphony of war and wonder, one family must conquer the greatest enemy whose motivations are a mystery and whose might could condemn humanity to cosmic dust.
Advance Praise
1. This exciting science fiction novel will keep you turning pages till the very last. The story is engaging and well thought out, and the writing is crisp. We are thrust into the thick of the action alongside Jaxton, Ryan, and Natalie as they fight to stop the relentless Hrum assault. It's a must read because it's a gripping and thought provoking page-turner in the genre of space opera, and because it features heroic protagonists, strange aliens, and mysteries waiting to be solved.
2. I thought this was a captivating science fiction novel that distinguishes itself by creating a richly detailed universe with multiple points of view from different characters. As an avid reader of science fiction, I've often found that stories with a single protagonist dominate the genre. I loved that this book broke that mold by offering us a multifaceted perspective on the unfolding events, allowing us to immerse ourselves in the struggles of multiple characters. Overall, it's a fantastic read.
3. Quite the space adventure. One thing that really struck me was the multi-POV approach. It's not often in sci-fi where you get to experience events from so many different perspectives, especially within one family. I also chuckled at some of the humorous dialogues, which added a nice break from the intense scenes. All in all, if you're looking for a fast-paced, character-driven sci-fi, this could be your next read!
4. I picked up ""Hrum"" because of my love for science fiction and a longing for a story that is different than what I typically read. I love how this book provides a fresh take on interstellar adventures. The dynamic Drake family, led by Captain Jaxton, and their epic struggle against the formidable Hrum invasion captivated my imagination. The author's commitment to crafting a universe through diverse viewpoints, along with captivating characters, intense space battles, and a touch of humor, made this book a thrilling journey worth experiencing.

The year is 3324, and Earth's colony planets have been at war with an alien species they call the Hrum. Their enemies are unusual because they act like mindless attack berserkers, who know how to use advanced weapons, but do not understand basic tactics. The humans have sent messages to the Hrum but have never received a reply. A few space military personnel have noticed this odd behavior but decided to keep it a secret from the public. One of the officers involved in this cover-up, Jaxton Drake, comes from a family of military officers who have proven to be formidable and reliable players in the war against the Hrum. His sister, Natalie, continues to be a master tactician for her ship, and his brother, Ryan, is a fearless marine ready to fight for justice and face any opponent. Their father, Senior Admiral Drake, is an admired leader with powerful connections. Will they ever defeat their unpredictable enemy or discover why the Hrum act strangely? Hrum is the first installment in The Drake Chronicles, and I loved everything about this book. Austin Davis uses mystery and adventure to intrigue readers and keep them engaged. The book has a smooth flow and does not contain boring technical jargon like other science fiction novels. The story is told from multiple points of view, giving the reader an overview of what is happening with different characters. The book has family drama, romance, military strategizing, and political tension, which are all plot lines that will keep you entertained. I loved the natural chemistry and casual camaraderie between the characters. The conversations, jokes, caring personalities, and details like the characters having nightmares about the war humanized them and made me relate to their problems. The book is a great introduction to this new series, and I hope to find out what happens next because I am hooked. I highly recommend this to anyone who loves science fiction. Great work.

A good start to a new sci-fi series. The book has plenty of action as it follows three members of a family through a war with an alien race. The plot will hold your interest. I cannot wait to read the next book in the series!
Thank you to #NetGalley for the ARC in exchange for my honest opinion.
Takeaway: Hrum was an action packed sci fi story that has a gripping plot and intriguing characters that are sure to keep your attention and make you want to keep reading!
The Good: Although you'd normally want an amazing book to be super long so it never ends, I actually loved that this was a shorter read (under 400 pages) because Davis did such a great job with the writing and the story and wrapped it up so well. I loved how action packed the story was but still made room for character development. A lot of characters can get lost in action based sci fi stories, but Davis balanced this well.
The "Bad": I wasn't completely immersed and found myself taking my time reading this book. Which isn't necessarily a bad thing. It just wasn't one of those books that I "couldn't put down". I absolutely loved the writing and the story, but for my personal 5 star reads, I want to be emotionally wrecked and left in pieces after a story. Even a military based sci fi one! Although, I find that more of a peersonal critique rather than against Davis or the book.
Overall Thoughts: I really enjoyed the story and would definitely recommend to my fellow sci fi/military readers!
