Description
Your local mall goths and graveyard lurkers experience the same milestones of parenthood as anyone else. Goths just do it with a little extra style and more Edgar Allan Poe references.
Goth Parenting takes you from a baby bat’s very earliest days through age seven, illustrating parents’ memorable moments, challenges, and rewards along the way. Like figuring out how to child-proof your tomb sweet tomb, what to feed a toddler to make sure they live deliciously, and how to cope if your little monster doesn’t wish every day was Halloween.
Whether your gashlycrumb tiny is a ball of darkness like you or a little ray of sunshine, there’s something here for every alternative parent. Because being a goth parent is about more than just Victorian accessories and black clothing—it’s about acceptance, love, and always being yourself. And also black clothing.
CELEBRATION OF ALL THINGS GOTH: The funny, gentle advice is peppered with instantly recognizable references, from Dracula to Edward Gorey to The Sisters of Mercy.
BEAUTIFULLY ILLUSTRATED ALT PARENTING BOOK: Cute and colorful pictures illustrate diverse, loving goth families on every page.

Gilly provides parenting tips beginning at the baby shower and going through to grandparenthood. While short and sweet, even I (someone who is, so far, only a dog parent), can see many nuggets of wisdom tucked between fun and humorous goth, emo, and punk references. Besides Gilly’s writing, Robinson’s illustrations show a variety of goth families of all shapes, sizes, genders, and expressions. I can almost guarantee anyone would be able to find someone like them in this book of less than 100 pages. She truly shows that anyone can be a goth (and a parent). This is not a scientific text filled with the latest parenting theories but is instead a general guide with gentle reminders for parents as they navigate raising a baby bat (or gremlin). It’s something I can see people picking up after a long day when they need a reminder that not burning the house down and getting their child to eat (even if it was just a bowl of pasta) is a victory.
This was such a fun and brilliant read. I love all things gothic and this was the perfect read. I would love to add it to my library in the near future! I would also gift this to some family and friends who are expecting baby gothlings !
I'd like to thank NetGalley, Casey Gilly, and Chronicle Books for an advanced reader copy in exchange for an honest review!
The advice was gold and the gothic references to art, literature, and music were well executed. I can't wait to own a copy!
A spooky and delightful book for all the Goth parents out there. This was so cute and precious. I adored the artwork and the hilarious little sayings in this. This is such a fun book for goths out there and honestly I would absolutely recommend!!
*Thanks Netgalley and Chronicle Books for sending me an arc in exchange for an honest review*
This was adorable and everything I wanted it to be! It was funny, I enjoyed all the goth references and the illustrations were so pretty! Thank you netgalley for the e arc.
This was a joy to read. Not only is it filled with succinct parenting tips, but the illustrations are gorgeous. And the sprinkling of Gothic references throughout were perfectly timed. Overall an adorable, highly recommended read.
Goth Parenting was such a fun read! This would be a great gift for parents that like things a little on the dark side. It was very funny but also had some solid advice!
Fun and laughs aren’t generally associated with Goths 🖤 but this book made me laugh and want to be a goth again. I have always loved bats and skulls and black and now I can share that with my kids. Although I will admit I like hot pink too so I’m just multi faceted.
This was such a fun read. Alt parents aren't usually included in cutesy baby books, so I appreciated this. Not only did I get a few laughs in, but it's also full of solid advice. Great read! 🦇
From the dedication to the last page, this book had me smiling (how very ungoth of me). Where was this book when I had my first kid??? The artwork, the humor, the journey through the ages, the prose.... I need a parenthood friend group of those who have read this book and will be using it as their guidebook / sanity saver. This book is as sweet as it is funny and my only complaint is that I don't have a hardcopy in my hands now.
I love different parenting books and this one is perfect for the goth couple! It isn't as much of a parenting book, per se, more of a this is your life with kids book. It's quirky and fun.
This is such a fun twist to parenting books/ parenting guides. I love how the the Casey Gilly doesn’t take herself too seriously and presents something that is both fun and informative. I like the lists and the chapter covers. 4.5/5
Thank you, #NetGalley for the ARC. All words are mine. This review is for an uncorrected copy. #GothParenting
Thank you Netgalley for giving an ARC in exchange for an honest review. Now, am I a parent? No. Am I goth? Also no. But man did I enjoy this cute and informative book about parenting little bats! The illustrations were adorable, the content made me laugh, and now I’m debating if the goth way is my way for raising little vampires. I had such a blast!!
This was a cute, quick read that reminds you of the highs and lows of parenting and allows you to be different. The illustrations associated with each page are incredible and I was eager to see what the next one would show.
The MCR reference was much appreciated as was the cat’s are siblings stance.
While I am not a parent, I do have littles in my life and friends who are at the age where I’m expecting a pregnancy announcement- they’ll be receiving a copy of this book when that time comes
Omg- oh my goth! This was such a precious (but dark!) read. The illustrations made the book for me, I would love to have some of those framed on the wall of a nursery or give as a baby shower gift. The advice was solid as well, and humanized all the diverse aspects of parenting. I laughed and I picked up some food for thought, the perfect combination. Even if you're not goth you'll see a piece of yourself in this book.
And for those of us who aren't yet parents to humans, they do call out that cats are siblings too!
Thank you Netgalley for the advance reader copy of Goth Parenting by Casey Gilly in exchange for an honest review. While I don't have kids of my own and am not able to, my sister and my best friend do and they would love this book. I definitely liked that it gave me something to relate to as that's the type of parent I would have been and the type of aunt I am.
5/5 Stars! Thank you, NetGalley and Chronicle Books for this eARC of Goth Parenting by Casey Gilly.
This was super cute and pretty fun to follow. Easy read and loved the fun illustration. This is definitely a book to get for my dark/dark humor friends - I have several in mind that I will want to gift this for them!
Very clever and quick easy read. Love this!
Thank you for the EArc Chronicle and NetGalley. Really cute little read about raising your kids as goths. I’m not a goth but this was entertaining and the illustrations were very cute.

THIS BOOK! OMG! I can't even put into words how much I enjoyed this book. The illustrations were so cute. There were pages of rhyming but not throughout, which was nice (not cheesy). The song lyric/title references were just a joy to see. I found myself laughing out loud many times. Quick read for busy goths with baby bats.
Perfect gift for a baby shower or new parents. I am cheering for this book's success. I will definitely be recommending it to the world of goths and their perspective or already existing crotchfruits! Cheers to the author and illustrator!
I'm a parent who brought my child with me to volunteer at horror conventions, where I was pleased and surprised to see so so many families with their children, including babies. Clearly, it's never too early to start sharing our love of genre.
The pictures are cute, the language is clever and fun, but my favorite thing is the section titles -- absolutely hilarious!! I highly recommend this for everyone who is able to think outside the boring, conventional box when it comes to parenting.
Thanks to NetGalley for letting me read this
This book was SO cute. It doesn't necessarily provide anything new to learn, more like reminders and letting parents know they're not alone in the struggles they face raising gremlins. It was positive, affirming, cute, and funny. This would make the perfect gift for a new goth parents. I can't wait to buy the physical copy for my bookshelf!
Though I am not yet a parent and could be categorized as "soft goth" at best, I loved this. Super cute. Super spooky.
Thank you NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the opportunity to read this advanced reader copy. All opinions expressed in this review are honest and my own.
Goth Parenting: The Dark Joys of Raising Baby Bats is an absolutely delightful parenting book with a dark and moody twist. It’s a sweet book about the ups, downs, and all arounds of parenting with humor and illustrations to die for. While this book does offer great and concise advice, my favorite takeaway from this book was the emphasis on parents remaining true to themselves while also allowing their little bats to discover who they are. In a time when parents often become strangers to themselves because they are so lost in parenthood and, on the flip side, the sad beige mom aesthetic is removing color from kids’ worlds this reminder is needed more than ever. You can be you while encouraging them to be them and everyone will be better for it. I am absolutely batty (wink wink) for this book.
Overall, I gave this book 5 stars.

Be still my aching gothic heart. This book is absolutely adorable. I love the art style used and the diversity shown. Goth so often is shown in one way, and it's encouraging to see that we are finally seeing the diversity the culture actually encompasses. And seeing it, even if it is in quite possibly the cutest parenting book I have ever seen. I am obsessed. I will definitely be checking this author and artist out more.
A hilarious short illustrated book filled with jokes about how goths handle parenting. Low-key similar vibes to an extent with the Fangs graphic novel so if you're a fan of that I suggest you give this one a try too just for the adorable illustrations and the silly jokes that had me giggling the whole time I was reading this!
Absolutely adorable book. The illustrations were perfect. We can't all be spectacular parents, but we can try. This book is hilarious and will help all new parents, not just the Goth ones. Read it, even if you aren't expecting a bundle of joy, its a cute book.
Were you expecting to learn that a book titled Goth Parenting is just absolutely sweet and adorable?
I loved the illustrations throughout the book and the poem for a picky eater made me laugh out loud (I have a three year old). Raven's first day of school and the reference to "The Black Parade" were other highlights for me. And the epilogue did make me teary.
The advice in this book isn't earth shattering. You'll encounter much of the same from other books, but it is presented here quite memorably. This would make a fantastic gift for the right new parents.
Thank you Netgalley for thos ARC.
This was such a cheeky and fun spin on a parenting book. The illustrations were absolutely perfect.
This book is a quick and cute read. I love the illustrations that accompanied the advice and information on each page. The advice and information about what to expect at different stages were solid and concise. I like that the author lets new parents know there will be ups and downs, but they are not alone. In addition, the author encourages new parents to not let critics make them feel bad, to take some time for self-care, and to let their kids be true to themselves. Overall, this is a cute, funny, but relevant book for parents-to-be and new parents.
Thank you Netgalley and Chronicle Books for this ARC I’m absolutely obsessed with it.
The art was amazing, so cute or I guess I should say absolutely dreadful. The pop culture references throughout were so appreciated. It’s such a quick, easy read while also being very informative and helpful to new parents (or not so new parents).
I absolutely cannot wait to get a finished copy for my shelves.
This was a quick and entertaining read! I don't have children yet, so this was a fun glimpse into what to expect without feeling overwhelmed. I loved the illustrations and thought this book was very funny!
I received an ARC from Chronicle Books via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review.
This was such an adorable book! The illustrations were perfect, I loved going through each picture of the Goth Parents and their little Gremlin. Though written for Goths, it has pearls of wisdom tucked in. I would love to give this to someone having an October baby, or to the Goth from High School who was forced into business professional attire by career choice.
This is such a delightful read. Not only are the parenting tips actually helpful, but the illustrations are truly gorgeous. If you’re like me and just love an aesthetically pleasing book, I think you’ll really enjoy this one. I was enamored by the artwork. It’s truly a beautiful book and I can’t wait to buy a physical copy for my trophy shelves.
I love that each page is concise and easy to read. As someone who works with kids everyday, this was easily the best way to consume this knowledge. It may be satire, but it’s genuinely useful. I love when books are informative while still being fun, and this book embodies that comical nature. The tips are short, to the point, and filled with so much wit.
This would be the perfect gift for a new parent. Especially for anyone looking for a little humor while they raise their baby bat. If you’ve got a family member that favors everything spooky, this is THE book for them. If you’re the spooky one in the family, I highly recommend you give this book a read. Even though I’m not looking to expand my family at this moment, I still thoroughly enjoyed this book.
A huge thank you to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the copy of this eARC.
This was pretty cute. The artwork was really well done and relating advice to a gothy audience was clever. I didn't find the advice to be particularly groundbreaking and the organization could be a bit more coherent, but overall a cute little read.
This was super fun (which is likely not the apathetic, melancholic review they were looking for, but alas). I have a baby bat at home and personally loved learning all the new things I can call my little monster ("bundle of organs", "little spider from Mars", etc.). The best part, aside from the alternative words for baby, were the illustrations. And the puns. And poking fun at goth lifestyle and aesthetic while also paying lyrical homage to it. The Ghastly Crumbs poem is a particular favorite of mine. Also, the author is right - Cats definitely count as siblings.
Thank you NetGalley and Chronicle Books for this ARC.
This has exactly what it promises! I don't have kids, but I do like goth stuff. Lots of culture and song references. Still maintained a nuanced approach (it's OK if your kids don't like the same things as you, you can't force an aesthetic onto your kids, etc.) while not being preachy. The illustrations are cute and fun.
I did have a weird issue with some of the illustrations in the epilogue (right before the graduate). Part of the page seemed like it was copied and pasted on top of another image. I read this in the NetGalley Android app. Not sure if this was a misprint or an app issue. No big deal but maybe something the publisher might want to check.
Do I have a child?—no. Did I still love this book?—yes! It's funny, but also really informative. If I do ever plan on having children I will definitely reference some of these tips. I loved the illustrations, and I also really liked the humor that was thrown in.
I would recommend this book to any current, new, or potential goth parent! It would also make a great gift.
There are a lot of silly parenting books out there with quips and advice about wrangling your toddler, but this is one of the more fun ones that I’ve come across. The light hearted (errrrr…. Dark?) take on parenting and learning that your kid will become their own little person! Highly recommend as a gift for a new parent, especially those that maybe lack some color in their wardrobe…. Thanks to NetGalley for an early review copy, all opinions are my own.
This would make a cute gift for an expecting and goth/generally spooky parent. It had witty advice and a lot of cute and colorful illustrations within.
Absolutely loooved this book! Such a cute lil read! I can not wait to get a hard copy of the book! Thank you for the inclusion!
An adorable illustrated guide for parenting full of humor.
This isn't so much a self help book as it is a humor book for the coffee table. It'll be a great addition to a goth baby shower gift basket (please gift it with diapers and other necessary items tho).
While most of its focused on the excellent art (looking into more of that because I would adore a graphic novel of goth parents more than this book tbh) there are some great tips like "adjust your own expectations (and remove the pressure of 'perfection')"
It was such a fun read as a goth parent of a lil batling. The horror and goth subculture references made me laugh and the art is so good I want a physical copy and some prints.
What a fun reminder that parenting can be what you want it to be. It’s a reflection of you. It’s not always that serious.
This little book almost read like an oracle or affirmation deck to me. I could easily see myself turning to a random page each day and taking on the short parenting tip it gave me.
This book is full of short and sweet parenting tips and reminders to help you get ideas, feel grounded as a parent in a stressful situation, and to laugh a little.
Thanks NetGalley for an ARC of this book.
Goth Parenting is a cute, funny, and charming book for goth parents and non-parents alike! Not only is it funny, it has some genuinely good advice for new parents along with some cheeky references to goth culture. It also has great spooky cute art by Robin Robinson. Whether you have your own brood of baby bats or just live on the dark side, you'll enjoy this book.
Despite being a happily child-free goth, this fun little book still managed to fully entertain me. For a second, I almost even felt like maybe I was missing out by not doing the whole mom thing lol
I was absolutely living for all of the witty puns and nods to the artists and films that I so adore, which Gilly melded seamlessly into the book without ever making it feel heavy-handed or forced. Now I have the most perfect gift idea for all of my friends who are expecting their own baby bats!
Thanks to NetGalley & Chronicle Books for this absolute delight of an ARC!
Thanks to Chronicle Books and NetGalley for providing me with a free digital copy of this book in exchange for an honest and fair review.
As a Goth mom... this book was fantastic! Done in more of a children's book style, but definitely speaking to adult Goth parents, this was so cute and informative in a way that you, as again, a Goth parent, need to hear sometimes. The illustrations were lovely and so inclusive! I may end up buying a physical copy of this book when it releases to keep on my shelves.
Clever, creative, and comedic, this book was an entertaining, quick read. The illustrations and stylizing of the book added to the fun!
What an adorable book!! I do believe there are tips that even a non-goth parent would enjoy. I am an out-of-the-box kind of person, and I loved that the parents in. this book were out of the box, and the kids were just fine. :)
While I liked the tips a lot, the illustrations are really what makes this book stand out. The illustrations are incredible and well worth your time.
This is a quick, very enjoyable read and I can see it being a gift for someone.
This is such a fun way to deliver really solid parenting advice. I loved the illustrations and the overall vibe of the book.
Beautiful illustrations. So funny, witty, and tongue in cheek with actual good advice for parents of every age. Quirky and relatable illustration. Perfect gift for any goth or alternative parent.
Thank you, Netgalley and Chronicle Books for this advanced reader's copy. This book is perfect for all new parents, especially those who want to raise their children a little differently. It gives great advice and super cute design with humor. It's not just a phase! Goth parents want to raise their baby right, too, maybe with just a little less pink. Their baby will hit the same milestones and need the same safety as every other baby on the block. And will think their Goth parents are totally lame, too.
I’m not planning to parent but I loved this. Very cute illustrations! It was funny and sweet and perfect for the alt parent in your life.
I loved everything about this book! The artwork is perfect and the vibe is perfect for all parents, but especially those that are not traditional. As a parent, the advise is spot on, short, sweet and concise. This would make a great gift. I loved it all around.
OMGOODNESS!!!!!!! This book is adorable/hilarious and clever!!! As a new mom of a tiny human um sorry "bag of organs" I am laughing out loud in my sleep deprived state. I will absolutely be buying this book when it comes out. I have a small IG account and I will be making a cocktail post about this. I cannot get over how accurate and creative it is. Thank you for this ARC
This one was so cute and fun!
I am so thankful to Chronicle Books, Casey Gilly, and Netgalley for granting me advanced digital access to this essential read for new and expecting parents of the goth genre. Though I'm not yet a parent, myself, I still enjoyed this book for its cute illustrations and sound advice with a bit of darkened flare. Goth Parenting hits shelves on September 3, 2024.
Thanks to Netgalley and the publisher for this eARC in exchange for an honest reviews. All opinions are my own.
This was such a cute, enjoyable read! The graphics are gorgeous. My elder emo heart rejoiced at all the beautiful gothic illustrations!
Very cute and funny advice. Getting a copy for my sister expecting her first baby this year. The illustrations are super cute!
Goth Parenting is a practical guide for new parents on what to expect with their first child… But goth flavored. The book goes from infancy to age seven. Each page gives a nugget of wisdom and includes fun illustrations. There is a fair amount of goth humor and the tone is gentle and playful, even when addressing less pleasant topics.
I appreciated that the book made common advice fun and included some less common topics, such as fitting in with other (normie) parents, being supportive of your child’s developing self-expression (even if it doesn’t match your own aesthetic), or acknowledging imaginary friends.
The graphic design of this little book is thoughtful and the illustrations are great. There are pop culture references peppered throughout that were cute, like Beetlejuice, Welcome to the Black Parade, and The Shining. Goth Parenting is an adorable little book that would make a wonderful gift, and the brevity of the text makes it far easier to digest than other parenting guides.
"Goth Parenting: The Dark Joys of Raising Baby Bats" by Casey Gilly is a delightful and heartwarming illustrated humor book that perfectly captures the unique experience of goth parenthood. With a blend of wit and warmth, Gilly takes readers on a whimsical journey from the earliest days of a baby bat through to age seven, highlighting the memorable moments, challenges, and rewards that come with raising children in an alternative lifestyle.
From navigating the intricacies of child-proofing a "tomb sweet tomb" to ensuring your toddler "lives deliciously," Gilly's humorous yet insightful narrative resonates with parents who infuse their lives with a touch of gothic flair and Edgar Allan Poe references. The book brilliantly showcases that goth parents, much like any other, face the same milestones but do so with an extra layer of style and individuality.
"Goth Parenting" is not just about Victorian accessories and black clothing—though there’s plenty of that, too. It's about acceptance, love, and the importance of always being true to oneself. Gilly masterfully illustrates that whether your little monster is a ball of darkness or a ray of sunshine, there’s something for every alternative parent in this charming guide.
This book is a must-read for goth parents and anyone who appreciates a unique and loving approach to raising children. With its delightful illustrations and heartfelt humor, "Goth Parenting" is sure to become a treasured addition to any family's bookshelf.
Thank you to NetGalley, the author, and publisher for an advanced copy to review for my honest opinion.
A lighthearted book that can serve as a reminder during any stage of parenting that your little monster and you are going to be ok. The illustrations are funny and fitting for the style of book and the humor is spot on.
Not just for Goths!
Though this would make a great gift for any goth or emo parents, I'd reccomend it to anyone with a sense of humor and love of the macabre.
Theres cute illustrations and fun pop culture references such as Beetlejuice, The Doors/Lost Boys, My Chemical Romance and Bowie, just to name a few. The advice is very Addams Family inspired yet mostly practical, while also managing to be inclusive of all types of families and personalities.
Thanks to NetGalley and Chronicle Books for the eARC!
Thank you to NetGalley for providing me with an early copy of this book.
I'm not a parent and don't plan to be, but I love to read about being Goth. I do think the parenting advice in it is helpful and may be a summarized version of what's in other books.
The illustration style fits the book.
Overall, I enjoyed it and it was a quick read.
*Goth Parenting* is a wickedly delightful celebration of the alternative lifestyle that brings a fresh, humorous perspective to the world of parenthood. Perfectly suited for families who revel in a darker, more distinctive style of life, this illustrated humor book combines the everyday challenges of parenting with a generous sprinkle of gothic charm and wit.
From the very first page, *Goth Parenting* sets the tone with its unique blend of humor and heart. The book follows the journey of a goth parent from the baby bat’s earliest days through age seven, offering a hilarious yet surprisingly heartfelt look at the milestones and mishaps of raising a child while maintaining an alternative lifestyle. Whether you’re navigating the trials of child-proofing your crypt-like home or trying to figure out how to get your toddler to appreciate the poetry of Edgar Allan Poe, this book has you covered.
One of the standout features of *Goth Parenting* is its ability to blend dark humor with genuine parenting insights. It doesn’t shy away from the real challenges parents face but does so with a clever, goth-themed twist that’s both entertaining and relatable. The book offers practical advice with a side of macabre humor, making the trials of parenting feel a bit more manageable and a lot more fun.
The illustrations throughout *Goth Parenting* are charmingly gothic, bringing to life the quirks and idiosyncrasies of raising a child with a love for all things dark and mysterious. From baby bat onesies to toddler-sized corsets, the book’s visuals add an extra layer of whimsy and appeal, perfectly complementing the text.
*Goth Parenting* also manages to capture the essence of what it means to be a parent within this alternative subculture. It’s not just about the aesthetic choices but about acceptance, love, and staying true to oneself. The book lovingly acknowledges that while goth parents might have a penchant for black clothing and Victorian accessories, their commitment to their children’s well-being and individuality is just as deep and sincere as anyone else’s.
In essence, *Goth Parenting* is more than just a humorous take on raising children in an alternative lifestyle—it’s a celebration of the unique ways in which goth parents express their love and care. With its mix of dark humor, practical advice, and charming illustrations, it’s a must-read for anyone who identifies with the goth subculture or simply enjoys a different take on the trials and triumphs of parenthood. It’s a perfect addition to any bookshelf, whether you’re a seasoned goth parent or just someone who appreciates a good laugh at the intersection of family life and alternative culture.
This was such a delight, I think I have found my go-to baby shower gift. From first moments to how to handle pre-teen hysteria, this book provided such a lovely theme of acceptance and love that is used to highlight learning moments for all types of parents. With a lots of good humor and some words of wisdom sprinkled in these pages, this would make a wonderful gift book for any Addams family fans in your life.
Expecting new little bundle of joy sometime soon, but the brightly colored, aggressively cheerful new-parent guides are not quite your style? Do you prefer a color palette that makes most Instagram mommies balk in horror and have a propensity for the morbid and macabre? If so, this might just be the book for you!
Goth Parenting is as funny as it is short - because let's be real, not a single new parent has the time to read a full-length book. It's filled with tips and tricks on how to navigate the murky waters of parents from the earliest days all the way up to the Teen Years - and I cannot recommend it enough.
Thank you so much to NetGalley and Chronicle books for the free e-ARC in exchange for an honest review.
I got this as a NetGalley ARC because I was simply intrigued.
Now this book is intended for expecting parents or goths or even both! However as someone who may not ever have kids, nor does she expect to want them, this was just fun to read. If you want to ease some worries about your potential future, see some amazing artwork, or read the MCR drop, pick this short illustrated book up.
This was super cute! I would by this for any of my friends that are goth or even into creepy stuff!
I loved the art and the fonts. It looks great.
This was a cute and simple adult picture book. Maybe a bit TOO short and sweet—I think there was a lot more bandwidth for information (and jokes) that went unused, and reading the book was the work of mere minutes. However, the drawings were a lot of fun—if anything made it worth it, they did. I could see each one being hung on a wall in someone's goth nursery.
