Ask Me Anything, Lord by Heather C. King is such a meaty, thought-provoking book. It is well intentioned and purposed in its focus of "Opening Our Lives to God's Questions." King's words, shared thoughts, and personal vignettes do well in teaching and facilitating examination. Her format is precise and comprehensive. Her requests, challenges, study helps, and Scripture citations were plentiful and layered.
While reading this book, I could easily imagine myself sitting across from King having a heart-to-heart Bible discussion. I am not talking about a light or superficial course, but a slice-and-dice, straight to the heart of the matter kind of discussion. This is that type of book. The kind of book that confronts you just as much as it comforts you. It is the type of book that is strong on teaching and solid on lessons. In my opinion, this is not a quick read book, rather it is a book that must be savored. The messages must be appreciated.
Easily, I could return to this book for a second, third, or fourth reading. In truth, I want to take it and do a class on it. King presented so many things that stirred me up and got me thinking. There is so much within the pages of this book that could be expounded upon.
At the end of the day, I know this, I want a hard copy. An e-copy is good, however, this book is a keeper and certainly it is the kind of book that needs to be held in hand, be marked up with notations, be colored in with highlighters, and be tattered by loving hands that flip, fold, or crinkle its pages.
Rating: 5/5 Recommend: Yes (highly)
Bookshelf Worthy: Yes Options: This book could be used in so many ways. It can be used for self-study, as a book club feature, as a Bible class series spotlight, or as a spiritual growth resource for congregants at large. It is an ideal read for women and men. I could see its content being referred to and used as a family discussion conversation starter or as a question facilitator among friends. There are so many possibilities.
A complimentary e-copy of this title was forwarded to me by the publisher via NetGalley in exchange for an honest review. The words I have expressed are my own, and they are shared with you in the hope that you might consider reading this book for yourself. I was not required to write a positive review, nor was I compensated in any way for my review.
"Yes, individuals matter to God."
Wow, such a simple statement but empowering one at the same time. To be fair, I want to say upfront, this post would have happened even if the book wasn't being reviewed by me. "Ask Me Anything, Lord" by Heather C. King is not the book I expected it to be... I am so grateful for that. There has been one problem though while reading it.
This reviewer wants to soak up each word. The problem comes when we need to write a review for a book in a timely manner. See my dilemma? :-)
Heather's writing draws me in. I find myself not wanting to miss one iota of what she is sharing. Here is another snippet of what I read this morning concerning 'individuals mattering to God':
Individuals mattering,
"is why He (God) framed the Bible the way He did. It tells of God's activity among humanity through the stories of people---broken, messed up, sinning people--- just like you and me...As we learn about these people, we ultimately learn about God."
(italics mine)
This is so freeing and wonderful. Who wouldn't want to sit here for a day or two and meditate and ponder on just these words. Hence, where my issue of a timely review comes into play.
Here is the nitty-gritty, thus far, on "Ask Me Anything Lord" by Heather C. King:
~ I am about 50% finished with the book.
~ Loving the book
~Plan on finishing the book
~Writing review now because review should be done in timely manner

Because Discovery House was great enough to supply me with a hard copy of this book, I am posting an updated review.
Good Questions God Asked In The Bible...Still Relevant Today
Great book with reflective questions based on the questions that God asked in the Bible. For example, after they sin God asks Adam and Eve "Where are you?". After Cain killed Abel, God asks "Where is your brother?". And God asks Moses at the burning bush, "What's that in your hand?". God doesn't ask these questions because He doesn't know the answers. He asks the questions so that the listener will reflect on their current situation, their relationship with God and where their faith is. King says "God's questions are a way of blessing us. He longs to heal, forgive, and restore. But God can also use questions to search us, know our hearts, and test what they contain".
Heather C. King is a talented new writer. Each chapter is filled with personal anecdotes from her life and is packed with scripture to support her points. She is the mother of four young children so I think young mothers will relate most to this book. She talks about the challenges of raising young children, the busyness of this time, and the way that it leaves her sometimes emotionally and physically exhausted. Each chapter is based on a specific question that God asked of somebody in the Bible....and you feel like you are in the middle of the story. She shows how each question is relevant to us today. King does a great job dissecting the context of those Bible stories and brings a fresh twist to what God is saying in stories that you may have heard over and over. This book is great for personal study but can also be used as a group Bible Study. At the end of each section she has the same four reflective questions to: 1. Make it personal 2. Make it connect 3. Make it real 4. Make it last. This is a book that is easy to read but it is not easy reading. The reader will benefit most by taking time to read carefully through each chapter, reflect on the meaning of the story and look for ways to apply the information to their daily walk.
I received a complimentary copy of this book from Discovery House Publishers in exchange for a fair and unbiased review.
